What is your opinion about SketchUp?
For me is the best option for architects, cause it'sso easy and fast to use, for example here in theoffice we use it to present projects and change in
real time things that the client wants and theyalways get amaze of the speed we work, and this isbecause of the speed of skp.

Building Information Modeling How
does Google SketchUp Fit In
By : John Clemons
Over the past year and a half, I have had the taskof implementing Building Information Modelingwithin a large construction firm in the northeast
United States. With that task comes the typicalhardware upgrades and purchasing of various BIMprograms, not to mention, the huge paradigm shiftin the building process. However, before gettingstarted in this line of work, I was using Google

process used to create and maintain the model. 3D
modeling, on the other hand, is just distinctlyrelated to the physical representation and theprocess of creating it.As I said before, Google SketchUp is not a BIMtool. It is, for the most part, just a 3D modelingtool. That being said, there are several BIM-like
features in SketchUp that I would like to pointout. One feature that automatically comes to mindis the component feature. While creating yourmodel, you can group geometry together to form acomponent that can be moved and copied withinthe model without affecting the integrity of therest of the model. For construction modeling, thisopens the opportunity to use the model forquantity takeoff, virtual mockups or even 4Dscheduling. Another small but very useful BIM-liketool is the shadowing tool. I consider the ability toanalyze daylight on your project a functionalcharacteristic; therefore it falls within the BIMcategory. Dynamic components are a BIM-likefeature only available to the Pro Users and theyare designed to give the model a more parametricatmosphere. Although SketchUp only has a few

BIM-like features, the plug-ins available for
SketchUp could very well fill in most of the voids.
Although SketchUp is not a BIM tool as I would
define it, that doesnt mean that I dont find valuein using it on the job. In fact, I find it to be anextremely useful supplementary tool for AutodeskRevit and Navisworks Manage. Lets say forexample that I am creating a project in RevitArchitecture and I need to create a furniturepiece that doesnt exist. I could either spend lotsof time trying to model in Revits parameter basedfamily editor or I could create something veryquickly in SketchUp and then import it into Revit.Once in Revit, I can then attach information to it

like specifications, materials, and other
documents. However, its important to note thatcreating dynamic features for the new SketchUpcreated family will be extremely limited. I havealso used SketchUp to create large pieces ofequipment to use for strictly visual purposes inRevit. I also use SketchUp extensively for the
creation of items for use in Navisworks Manage.Navisworks Manage is collaboration software thatgives the user the ability to create clash reports, construction simulations, animations, site logisticsplans, and even renderings. This program alsoallows the import of almost any file type createdby 3D modeling software. If I have to put a sitelogistics plan together and I need a crane, itssimple enough to open up Google warehouse anddownload a crane right into the Navisworks model.Theres no reason to reinvent the wheel. I havealso created or downloaded items in SketchUp foruse in animations showing a piece of constructionequipment moving on the site. This becomes reallyhelpful on very tight project sites. Beforeconcluding, I would like to point out that eventhough this article is about using SketchUp for

BIM purposes, I have used it countless times as a
visualization tool. And it has never disappointed inthat respect.I would like to conclude by saying that I believethat Google SketchUp has a bright future in theworld of Building Information Modeling. Not onlybecause of what Google might potentially add to
the program in the future but also because of thepossibilities that can be realized through the useof SketchUp plug-ins. Once again, I would like tothank Debarati Nath for giving me the opportunityto contribute to this magazine.

communication between them and their clients. SketchUpcontains a compact yet robust tool-set with an intelligent
guidance system to render, to create 'see though' and hidden lineviews, to orbit around the design and create a walk through the'virtual' site. The Professional version of the software also allowsinter alia, sun studies - One can put forward a point on theearth's surface and the time of day and SketchUp will make useof ray tracing to forecast the shadows accurately that will becast by your model.
SketchUp is used in this sector to:
Quickly exploring design ideas Pre-sales visualization Creating professional presentation documents with LayOut Communicating with clients and contractors Creating accurate floor plans to scale Submitting bids
Creating and configuring custom Dynamic Components Space planning Multiple wireframe, shaded, and rendered views of an
interior space Interior and exterior shadow studies Real time color composition Material & texture comparisons & analysis Populating interior spaces with high quality entourage Paint manufacture product swatches and view them in

Digital Watercolor of an
Architectural ElevationBy: Jim Leggitt
I have been exploring a new hybrid Digital Watercolorvisualization process and recently found an opportunity to try my
technique on an architectural elevation. Its now very common forarchitects to develop conceptual designs using Google SketchUpmodels and they often represent building elevations that aredirectly exported from those 3D models. My digital watercolorillustration method requires a few additional modeling steps andsome hand coloring, but the results have a remarkable similarityto traditional watercolor paintings - perfect for representingdesign concepts with an informal, hand-drawn character!
The images below look somewhat repetitive but upon closeinspection reveal the individual steps about my process from theinitial SketchUp model to the final digital filtering effect. Threesoftware programs were used for this visualization method; 1)Google SketchUp, 2) Shaderlight, and 3) Adobe Photoshop. Hereis the story behind this exciting addition to your designcommunication tool set!

Evolution of the 3D Model. My process began withthe SketchUp model created by another architect (top image). The client needed a complete overhaul of the building facade byeliminating its original contemporary box design and reflecting amore traditional mission style massing, fenestration pattern and
sloped roof forms. I modified the facade (middle image) and thenpopulated the model with street level entourage that includedsignage, cars, trees and people. As I developed the model, theclient added comments and the elevation continued to improve.

Step 1: Basic SketchUp Elevation. This is the saved view frommy updated SketchUp model with a dark blue sky color andshadows carefully positioned to accentuate the building massing.Notice that all of the glass windows have the same even tone ofgray color. This is typical of SketchUp rendering output and can
be greatly improved by the use of the photorealistic renderingplugin for SketchUp called Shaderlight.

73 | P a g e w w w . s k e t c h u p - u r - s p a c e . c o m
Step 2: Shaderlight Rendered Elevation.I rendered theSketchUp model using Shaderlightand immediately discoveredthe beautiful quality of light, shadows, glass and especially thegraduated blue tones of the sky. I rendered the view at a veryhigh image size in order to capture the greatest amount of detail.
Notice that all of the linework disappeared with thephotorealistic rendering. A simple method of replacing thelinework was to export the lines (edges) only from SketchUp andcombine the layers.

74 | P a g e w w w . s k e t c h u p - u r - s p a c e . c o m
Step 3: Exported SketchUp Edges. In the SketchUp model, Iturned off the sky, shadows and materials. I exported a highresolution building elevation which basically captured the edges(linework) of the model. Make sure you export a high resolutionfile in order to maintain the detail, especially in the hand railings.

Step 4: Composite Image.I combined the Shaderlight renderingand linework image in Photoshop, merging them into an elevation
that has both a high level of model detail and the wonderfulquality of light. I kept the layers separate in the Photoshopcomposite in order to adjust their densities prior to printing.
Step 5: Lightened Composite Image. This was one of the mostimportant steps in the visual process and worth a carefulexplanation. Reproducing the elevation at full color and lineintensity would not allow for additional color to be added. Therefore, it was necessary to lighten both the linework and thebuilding elevation color. In Photoshop, I gave the base image layera 75% transparency and the linework layer a 50% transparency.
Notice the big change in appearance between the images in step 5versus step 4.

76 | P a g e w w w . s k e t c h u p - u r - s p a c e . c o m
Step 6: Hand Coloring with Markers (with enlarged view). Thisstep was where the digital watercoloring technique originated. Iprinted the lightened image 10x17 on heavy weight Epson coatedbond paperusing my Epson Stylus Photo 2000P printer. I thencolored much of the building facade with very light Chartpak ADmarkers. I accented some of the window mullions and roof edgeswith a white Prismacolor pencil. I finally traced over many of the
building edges, trees and people with a very light graphite pencil. The elevation still looked somewhat faded, but the final filteringstep would add contrast back into the image.

77 | P a g e w w w . s k e t c h u p - u r - s p a c e . c o m
Step 7: Photoshop Watercolor Filtering (with enlarged view).Iscanned the final hand colored print at 300 dpi and imported theimage into Adobe Photoshop. Using the watercolor filter, Iapplied the filter only once to the image and adjusted thecontrast levels to deepen the blacks and lighten the whites of theimage. This filtering process created the wonderful character forthe image and coupled with the pencil linework gave the overall
elevation an informal hand drawn and painted quality.

78 | P a g e w w w . s k e t c h u p - u r - s p a c e . c o m
Step 8: Additional Watercolor Filtering (unsuccessful). Out ofcuriosity, I applied a second round of watercolor filtering to theimage. The additional filtering distorted the image too much andwas unsuccessful in improving the watercolor effect. I did not usethis version for any presentation.
My hybrid digital watercolor process is a new visual tool fordesigners and I recommend that you first try following thesesteps and then experimenting with your own digital paintingprocess. Let me know if you find a new and improved method andIll share your findings with others! Good luck!

Not all fun and games interior
design major includes hard work
Nestled between the Collins and Dawson residential halls is a two-story redbrick building called Martin House. Inside, interior design students workdiligently on design projects, often late. To three senior interior design
majors, Martin House has been their base of operations for the last threeyears.Martin House contains computer-aided design programs on the ground floorand a resource area and drafting tables on the second floor. At the senior level, projects are done almost completely by computer.Although this saves students time, the seniors can still expect their currentprojects to take about 400 hours of work over the course of eight weeks.Within the octagonal-shaped floor plan on their computer screens, theoffices of a law firm are slowly taking shape.
The seniors are seasoned veterans of extreme projects and the long hoursthat accompany their major. With their current project deadline only a few weeks away, Waxhaw, N.C.,senior Kathryn Mullinaxsaid the seniors are working hard to allowthemselves time to enjoy their final homecoming as Baylor students. Were trying to get like 12 to 15 hours in a day so that we can go tohomecoming, Mullinax said. Im going to enjoy my last homecoming as astudent. I cant wait.Fort Worth senior Bailey Sullivan was a Sing chair for Alpha Chi Omegalast
spring, so now she balances Pigskin practice with working on her interiordesign project and studying for her other classes. Time management hasbeen one of her biggest challenges as well as the crucial element in survivingan interior design major, she said. You have to make [time management] your priority or you drown, Sullivansaid. I think for me, staying busy helps me manage my time better. If Ihave a lot of free time, Im going to find more time to be lazy.

In her first year as an interior design major, Mullinax said there were timesshe wouldnt sleep because of work. Since then, Mullinax says shes become
more accustomed to managing her time to handle the long hours of work. You find your new limit every day in this major, Mullinax said. We aremore productive when were more pressed. These projects can last as long as
you want them to. You can stop whenever you want and accept the grade youhave, but the problem is none of us will do that. We will work to the end. Welove it. We cant help but love it.Sullivan agreed. You have to love it to have gotten this far, Sullivan said. For large-scale commercial projects, like the one theyre working on now,
Mullinax said the enormous number of hours of study interior design majorswill complete comes of trying to meet all of the building codes andregulations they must comply with. Once they receive their assignments, they start conducting research that by the end of their projects, will fill a2-inch binder. Sullivan said the research can go on for as long as they let it,and it covers everything from the culture of the area theyre designing in tothe building code restrictions of a particular location, which change withevery project. For assignments, the students are given the exterior walls of a building, andthe designers must plan and design the interior walls, choose furnishingsaccording to their clients requirements and produce their design in acomputer-generated 3-D model and a 2-D drafting program. Its a really big challenge, San Antonio senior Laura Judsonsaid. Its beenreally fun to make the pieces of the puzzle fit.Judson said most people dont realize how many hours are required for eachof their projects.I think people just dont realize how in-depth it is, Judson said. We knowconstruction, we know architecture, we know plumbing. We know everythingthat an architect and an engineer would know.Mullinax said despite the vast amount of time and work required for hermajor, she still loves to do the projects and would willingly do them again. The whole thing Im in love with. I love concept development, research,[and] programming. I could see myself having a lot of fun in a career ininterior design. Im excited for that, Mullinax said, But I could also seemyself doing the last two years over again and having just as much fun.

Autodesk Catch Make a 3D print of
anything3D printing the process of making actual objects using printed or etchedlayers has been coming of age for several years, mostly in the form ofhigh-end commercial devices that allow design firms like IDEO to createprototypes for clients. More recently, less expensive model making tools likethe DIY MakerBothave come on the scene, allowing schools to equip labswith a limited form of 3D capability. Autodesk helped unleash this wave of
creativity with its innovative 123D applicationearlier this year. With 123Dusers can design models or download existing models from Autodeskslibrary and then either print them on templates or have them created on a3D printer by Autodesk. The first 123D product, while very powerful, requires users to learn a CADtool to design their model, limiting the audience to serious hobbyists withplenty of time to learn how to use the software for model creation. Now,Autodesk has brought 3D printing to the rest of us, with 123D Make and123D Catch. Together, the two applications allow you to create, preview, and
build a 3D model of anything you can walk around and photograph.123D Catch handles the model creation part of the process its a productized version of AutodesksProject Photofly. First you capturelots of images of the object you are planning to model the more thebetter. Ideally youll take pictures from all different perspectives, bywalking around the object and changing position from high to low as well. Forthose familiar with using Microsofts Photosynth to create a walk-aroundimage of an object, the process should be quite familiar. Once youvecaptured plenty of images, you upload them to Autodesks servers where a
3D model, in Autodesks 3DP format, is constructed. Youll get an email whenyour model is ready to view, an estimated 10 to 15 minutes later.
Of course, in addition to viewing your model to get a 3D walkaround, it canbe printed out in 3D. Autodesk provides an online printing service throughpartner Ponokoor, if you are lucky enough to live in the Bay Area, the TechShopoffers members access to a variety of 3D printering and

cutting devices. 123D Make comes in handy for this step, helping youvisualize the final product while you adjust the specifics of how you plan to
print it using more, thinner layers of cardboard will yield a smoothermodel, for example.
Unfortunately, due to their differing histories, 123D Make and 123D Catchare available on different platforms initially, with Catch only running onWindows and Make only running on Mac. Autodesk is obviously working toaddress that issue, and also plans mobile and cloud versions of bothapplications, but the odd platform compatibility situation will make the pairof applications a little tricky to use for the time being. So now you have noexcuse not to have your very own version of that priceless sculpture orhistoric icon youve always envied. Time to get started!

Event Summary The Making of
Real SteelApproximately 50 students and artists filled the main training room atEscape Studios newly opened facility in Santa Monica to watch DigitalDomain present a behind the scenes look at the making of the VFX for RealSteel.
To lead off the event, Digital Domains Digital Environments Supervisor,
Geoffrey Baumann, gave an in depth look at the photography and thoroughdocumentation done on set. Environment panoramas, HDRs, and cameraandlight locations were all captured on location, and terabytes of referencematerials were sent back to the DD team.
Next, Animation Supervisor, Erik Gamache, walked through the challenges ofcreating believable robot animations and fight sequences. Erik describedhow they were able to take the mocap provided by actors on stilts, whichlacked the correct proportions and the necessary weight and gravity of 9tall robots, and modify the animations to achieve the final results.
Digital Lighting Lead, Blake Sweeney presented how sophisticated lightingsetups were created and rendered in V-Ray; and he described how they wereable to use the VRayBlendMtl and a series of masks to reveal layers ofdamage as the robots battled it out in the ring.
The final presentation by the Digital Environments Lead, Justin van der Lekdemonstrated how the various elements were brought into Nuke andcomposited for the final result. He explained how they were able to achieve
a sophisticated crowd set up using individual characters captured on greenscreen that were dynamically placed in their proper locations.
To round out the evening, raffle prizes were awarded by the eventsponsors. The first three winners took home Real Steel Crew Packages fromDigital Domain, and another lucky winner received a free V-Ray course

PCB layout module for Google
SketchUp
RS Components announces the release of its new PCB Converter forSketchUp tool, which allows designers to import intermediate data format(IDF) files into Google SketchUp. The new module adds a 3D CAD back-endcapability to PCB design tools and takes SketchUp into the electronicproduct design domain, transferring files from any CAD environmentproviding IDF output into COLLADA format.
PCB Converter for SketchUp can be downloaded for free from theDesignSpark SparkStore at www.designspark.com, from the RS websiteatwww.rsonline.co.za/electronicsor from the plug-ins area on the GoogleSketchUp website, http://sketchup.google.comGoogle SketchUp is already known as the worlds most popular free 3Ddesign tool, and is rapidly gaining a widespread and loyal following amongstelectronics design engineers. This is thanks not only to its capabilities as aCAD package, but also due to the fact that many of these capabilities areavailable in the free version. Using PCB Converter for SketchUp, users can
import IDF files, a file specification designed specifically for the exchangeof printed circuit assembly data between mechanical design and PCB layout.
Electronics engineers are able to export their PCB designs into GoogleSketchUp to assess their compatibility with the mechanical constraints ofenclosures and mounts. This allows them to make design decisionsimmediately, and mitigates the need for redesign requests and design

Students work to transform
community with compost
Engineering students at Lebanon High School are putting their creative skillsto the test to design and create compost bins."I really like engineering. I really like building things. I really like usingGoogle SketchUp," said Alexandra Astwood, a senior. From the drawing table to the wood shop, the kids are piecing together theirsustainable waste containers."I just feel like a lot of kids in this school want to help their environmentand this is just a step closer to making that goal happen," said Chris Henry,an engineering student.

The engineering students are collaborating on the project with the school's"Students For A Sustainable Future" group. SSF-- as it is known-- wrote the
Burn Foundation grant to get the project off the ground."It's paid off a year of composting at our current composting rates and thetwo design stations and signage that the art classes are making," scienceteacher Chrissy Morley said.
A local farm in Corinth is receiving the waste. Morley says that the design, construction, and implementation of the bins themselves are stretchinglearning throughout the school."It is kind of a nice fusion where we are trying to get a lot of buy-in fromstudents, so that in the cafeteria they will say, I worked on that or I helpedwrite the grant," Morley said."There's a lot of different components that go into this, so I think we arealready learning a lot," Astwood said.
But the kids are not stopping there. They hope the farm-to-school project--like those already in place in neighboring Vermont-- will be mimicked acrossthe country."My goal is not just to have local schools have the compost station but maybeone day to have it nationwide," Henry said.
The students hope to have the compost bins finished and useable by Nov. 18.On that day, New Hampshire is hosting its first ever farm-to-schoolconference at Lebanon High School.
