Bones in your body are living organs

 Bones make different tissues

Cells in the bone use energy

Bones are the framework of our body

Gives shape and support to the body.

 Protects internal organs.

Works with muscles and joints to move.

 Red marrow forms blood cells

 Stores phosphorus and calcium compounds

Every bone is considered an organ

It is basically the only “organ”

There are various internal and external

characteristics

Periosteum The surface is covered by Periosteum

It is a tight fitting membrane and “tough”

a. Blood vessels carry nutrients in the bone

b. Important to repairs and growth of the

bone

c. Periosteum has two layers:

d. The Cambium Layer and the Fibrous Layer

The inner Cambium layer digresses with age

It is at its greatest during childhood

It is also used to repair bones

The outer Fibrous layer is also important

It’s a major contributor to blood supply

The blood supply goes to the bone

It also goes to the skeletal muscle

Compact Bone It’s under the Periosteum

Elastic fibers keep the bone flexible

It contains blood vessels, minerals, and bone

cells

Spongy Bone:

 Less compact

Has holes to make it lightweight

Marrow:

Fatty tissue that fills in cavities (spaces)

Produces red and white blood cells

Produces 2-3 billion red blood cells a second

Cartilage: It is a thick, smooth layer

It covers the ends of bones

 Absorbs the shock

It also makes certain movements easier

Multiple sclerosis

Rickets

Osteoporosis

 It’s an autoimmune disease

It affects the brain and the spinal cord.

Causes loss of vision, balance, and sensation

Lack of movement causes problems with

bones

 Weakens the bone.

 Common on the elderly.

People who smoke get it often.

People with a lot of caffeine

get it more often as well.

 Normally hurts the spine

Childhood disorder that softens the bone

Makes it prone to deformation and fractures

Main cause is of lack of Vitamin D

Another cause is lack of calcium

It is fairly common in developing countries

This is due to lack of nutrients

Milk and calcium can help prevent rickets

Vitamin D and nutrients can also prevent

rickets

 It causes bone to weaken

May cause bones to break more easily

It is very common in urban countries

 10 million Americans have it

It can occur in both men and women

It can happen at any age

It is most common with the elderly

There are 270 bones in a baby

There is only 206 bones in an adult

Human and Giraffes have the same amount of bones in their neck

The femur is ¼ of your height

All bone marrow is red at birth
