1.1 Welcome to Skateboards, Inc. Microsoft Office Simulation
Skateboards, Inc. is an integrated Microsoft Office Simulation that will keep your students “blading and boarding” through the entire Microsoft Office suite and loving every minute of it. In the simulation, the student will assume the role of a Microsoft Office Specialist for Skateboards, Inc., a new indoor skateboarding and rollerblading park located in the heart of Rapid City, South Dakota. Skateboards, Inc. is not just a skateboarding and rollerblading park; housed within the facility is a food court (The Skateboard Shack), big screen TVs, a Pro Shop, an Arcade, a lounge, and a disc jockey booth to keep the patrons “coming back for more.”
1.2 Who Should Use the Skateboards, Inc. Simulation?
Skateboards, Inc. is designed for students who are enrolled in a secondary-level
computer applications course that includes one or more of the Microsoft Office software applications in its curriculum. The simulation is designed to allow students to use and apply their Microsoft Office knowledge and skills in an integrated, real business setting. 1.3 What You Will Need to Complete the Skateboards, Inc. Simulation
• The Skateboards, Inc. Resource CD. You will learn more about the Skateboards, Inc. Resource CD
in Chapter 3. • Any version of Microsoft Word • Any version of Microsoft Excel • Any version of Microsoft Access • Any version of Microsoft Publisher (or an equivalent desktop publishing software such as Adobe
PageMaker, Adobe InDesign or QuarkXpress) • Any version of Microsoft PowerPoint

1.4 Your Role as the Instructor
The Skateboards, Inc. simulation is set up using a step-by-step, self-guided independent format. It is designed to be completed as an independent, self-paced project for the student, with guidance and facilitation provided by the instructor.
As the instructor, your job will be to:
• introduce the simulation to the students. • get students excited and motivated about completing the simulation. • review and discuss each part of the simulation with the students. • provide technical assistance and guidance to students as they progress through each part of
the simulation. • be a facilitator for students by offering suggestions, advice, and assistance with each project
in the simulation. • monitor student progress to ensure each is on pace to complete the simulation within the
expected timeframe. 1.5 Prerequisite Skills
The Skateboards, Inc. simulation is designed to be used as a reinforcement supplement for Microsoft Office students. It is important to note that the projects in this simulation are designed to be completed using any of the Microsoft Office software applications. The instructions in the simulation are provided in a generalized format and are not specific to any one version of the Microsoft Office suite. Prior to completing this simulation, the student should have a basic working knowledge of the following software:
• Microsoft Word • Microsoft Access • Microsoft Excel • Microsoft PowerPoint • Microsoft Publisher or an equivalent desktop publishing software
1.6 Learning Outcomes
The Skateboards, Inc. simulation has been aligned with the NBEA (National Business Education Association) and ISTE (International Standards for Technology Education) standards for Information Technology and Microsoft Office Specialist Certification skills. The list on the next page represents learning outcomes for students who complete the simulation. Please note that individual instructors may vary these learning outcomes based on several factors, including course level, student skill level, grade level, and course objectives and goals.

Students who successfully complete the Skateboards, Inc. simulation will demonstrate proficiency in:

It is recommended that the instructor:
• review the Skateboards, Inc. workbook in its entirety before administering the simulation. • have a copy of the Skateboards, Inc. workbook readily available while the students are
working on the simulation. • ensure that the Skateboards, Inc. Resource CD has been installed on all computer
workstations that will be used by students to complete the simulation.

The Skateboards, Inc. simulation is designed to be used in conjunction with the Skateboards, Inc. Resource CD. The Skateboards, Inc. Resource CD must be installed on each student’s computer workstation prior to beginning the simulation.
The Skateboards, Inc. Resource CD contains the following two main folders:
Skateboards, Inc. Simulation (Install this folder on student workstations) This folder is intended for the students. It contains the necessary folders and files students will need throughout the simulation.
Skateboards, Inc. Instructor Resources (DO NOT install this folder on student workstations) This folder is intended for classroom instructors only. It contains this Instructor’s Guide and project answer key solution files.
To avoid giving students access to the “Skateboards, Inc. Instructor Resources” folder, it is recommended that the classroom instructor perform the installation of the Skateboards, Inc. Resource CD.

3.2 Installing the Skateboards, Inc. Resource CD Instructions for Installing the Skateboards, Inc. Resource CD: 1. Place the Resource CD in your computer’s CD-ROM drive. 2. Open the contents of the CD while in the CD-ROM drive. 3. Copy the folder titled “Skateboards, Inc. Simulation” from the CD
to each student’s hard drive or network drive.
Important Note: DO NOT copy the folder titled “Skateboards, Inc. Instructor Resources” folder to students’ computers. The files contained within this folder are designed to be used by the instructor only.
3.3 Results After Installing the Skateboards, Inc. Resource CD
After installing the Skateboards, Inc. Resource CD, you should notice the following folder directory structure has been set up on each computer’s hard drive or network drive:
3.4 Using the Skateboards, Inc. Logo Images
Many of the projects the students will be completing in the simulation will require them to include either the Skateboards, Inc. logo image and/or the 3-D Sky View image of the Skateboards, Inc. park in their documents. After installing the Skateboards, Inc. Resource CD, these files can be accessed in the “Logos” folder under the “Skateboards, Inc. Simulation” folder.

The Skateboards, Inc. logo and 3-D Sky View image files are hi-resolution, full color, and have been prepared in the following formats:
• EPS • Illustrator • JPEG • Photoshop • TIFF The different file formats of the logos have been placed in their respective folders
under the “Logos” folder on the Skateboards, Inc. Resource CD. For example, all JPEG formatted image files are located in the “JPEG” folder within the “Logos” folder. Prior to beginning the simulation, it is recommended that students explore the “Logos” folder to familiarize themselves with the different formats available. 3.5 Instructor Resources Available on the Skateboards, Inc. Resource CD
The Skateboards, Inc. Resource CD contains a folder titled “Skateboards, Inc. Instructor Resources.” Within this folder, you will find the following: • This Instructor’s Guide • A folder titled “Project Answer Keys”
The “Project Answer Keys” folder contains answer keys (in PDF format) to each of the projects included within the Skateboards, Inc. student workbook. See 3.6 below for more information about the contents of the “Project Answer Keys” folder.
For easy access and reference, it is recommended that you copy the folder titled “Skateboards, Inc. Instructor Resources” from the Resource CD to your computer’s hard drive or network drive. 3.6 Contents of the “Project Answer Keys” Folder
The “Project Answer Keys” folder located within the “Skateboards, Inc. Instructor Resources” folder on the Skateboards, Inc. Resource CD contains solutions to each project in the Skateboards, Inc. simulation. All of the solution files are in PDF format and can be opened and printed using Adobe Acrobat Reader. The contents of the “Project Answer Keys” folder are provided in Table 3-1.

5.1 About Grading the Skateboards, Inc. Simulation
Many of the projects in the simulation are designed to allow students to exercise their own creativity and document-development skills. Although there are specific guidelines and instructions the student must follow in completing the simulation, the end result of some of the projects will be unique for each student. Hence, some of the answer keys provided on the Skateboards, Inc. Resource CD will vary from the students’ documents.
The grading system included in this chapter is designed to evaluate the student’s work upon completion of each project in the Skateboards, Inc. simulation. This chapter includes a series of Skateboards, Inc. Grading Rubric Tables. For each Microsoft Office software application, there is a grading rubric table, (Table 5-1 through 5-5).
5.2 Using the Skateboards, Inc. Grading Rubric Tables
There are a total of five grading rubric tables required in order to assess and evaluate each completed project of the student’s work. Each grading rubric table is designed to evaluate the corresponding projects as indicated in each table. Each Skateboards, Inc. grading rubric provides the instructor with rubric categories and the criteria that must be achieved by the student to attain the maximum point value of sixteen points for each project completed. It is recommended that the instructor print a copy of each grading rubric table to reference while completing the Skateboards, Inc. Grading Form.
The following is a list of each grading rubric table and its corresponding software application:

5.3 About the Skateboards, Inc. Grading Form
The Skateboards, Inc. Grading Form (shown in Table 5-6) is designed to be used with the corresponding Skateboards, Inc. Grading Rubric Tables (shown in Tables 5-1 through 5-5). The Skateboards, Inc. Grading Form can be used to calculate a final numerical grade for each individual part of the simulation and/or a final numerical grade for the entire simulation, including or not including the extra credit projects. A sample Skateboards, Inc. Grading Form is provided in Table 5-7. 5.4 Completing the Skateboards, Inc. Grading Form
To Calculate a Final Numerical Grade for Each Student,
Follow the Steps Given Below:
Step 1: Assign Points to Each Rubric Category for Each Project Using the appropriate Skateboards, Inc. Grading Rubric Table, assign point values to each rubric category and compute the total points earned for each project completed by the student. Transfer these totals to the column labeled “Total Points Earned Out of 16 Possible Points” on the Skateboards, Inc. Grading Form. Step 2: Calculate Each Student’s Raw Score Out of 100% Fill in the “Raw Score Out of 100%” column on the Skateboards, Inc. Grading Form for each project completed by the student. The “Raw Score Out of 100%” is computed by taking the “Total Points Earned Out of 16” for each project and dividing it by 16 then multiplying by 100. Example: If a student earned 14 out of 16 points for a project, the Raw Score Out of 100% would be computed as follows: 14/16 = .875 X 100% = 87.5 Step 3: Calculate the Total Points Earned for Each Project The “Total Points Earned” is calculated by multiplying the student’s “Raw Score Out of 100%” column by the “% Value Out of 100% This Part is Worth” column. These answers should be placed in the column labeled “Total Points Earned.” Step 4: Calculating Final Grades for Each Part of the Simulation The final grade for each part of the simulation is calculated by adding the values in the “Total Points Earned” column. Once the totals are computed, the student should have a final grade filled in for the following areas on the Skateboards, Inc. Grading Form:
Part 1: Word Final Numerical Grade Part 2: Excel Final Numerical Grade Part 3: Access Final Numerical Grade Part 4: Publisher Final Numerical Grade Part 5: PowerPoint Final Numerical Grade
Note: Separating the grades for each part of the simulation allows the instructor to issue grades if the student was not required to complete the entire simulation. For example, a student who completed Part 2: Excel and Part 4: Publisher can be issued a final grade by averaging these two parts. Step 5: Calculate the Extra Credit Points Earned If applicable, calculate the Optional Extra Credit Projects by following Steps 1-3 above. Step 6: Calculate the Final Numerical Grade To calculate the Final Numerical Grade for each student, add the final numerical grades for Parts 1-5 and divide this total by 5. Add the Total Extra Credit Points Earned (if applicable) to this number. This is the Final Numerical Grade the student has earned on the simulation.
