The mission of the Skolkovo Innovation Center and the Skolkovo Foundation that established it, is to create an ecosystem in Russia conducive to the development of innovations to support cutting edge research and development and then to commercialize the results of such R&D in five priority fields of technological progress.

The Skolkovo Foundation aims to ensure that the Innovation Center can provide facilities for the full cycle of the innovation process including education, R&D, experimental research and design, and commercialization of the results.

The Skolkovo Foundation is creating a model for the development of an innovation-based economy for all of Russia. The Innovation Center serves as proving grounds to test the mechanisms for promoting the practical application of cutting edge ideas proposed by Russian academic and applied research institutions.

SKOLKOVO IS A KEY ELEMENT IN THE SYSTEM OF RUSSIAN DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTES that seeks to support innovation projects at every stage of development, from when it’s just an idea all the way through sales and marketing, creating a system of continuous support that startups can draw upon as they work on their projects. The Skolkovo Foundation focuses on the pre-seed and seed stages of business development and some of the aspects of the launch stage. Subsequent stages such as business growth and development, IPO and financing are supported by RVС, RUSNANO and VEB, respectively.

ABOUT THE CLUSTER

‘The fuel and energy complex is a key sector in the Russian economy. At the same time, Russia’s energy consumption per unit of GDP far exceeds that of other countries in the same class. For us in the Energy Efficient Technologies Cluster, this means that there’s huge potential to commercialize energy efficient technologies in Russia.

The global energy sector is constantly facing new challenges such as dwindling reserves in traditional oil and gas fields, transition to fracking technologies and active research into alternative energy sources.

Both around the world and in Russia, new breakthrough technologies are being developed to accumulate energy, utilize renewable sources of energy and deploy intelligent grids. All of these can radically change the structure of the industry and the approach to the generation, transmission and consumption of energy. This also creates powerful, long-term demand for innovation in this sector. What this means for startups in the energy efficiency and fuel and energy sectors is that they’re looking at practically unlimited potential for the commercialization of innovations. The main goal of the cluster is to create an environment to support innovations that seek to introduce new breakthrough solutions for energy efficient use of energy resources. First of all, the kind of solutions we’re talking about here are those that aim to improve the efficiency of the oil and natural gas industry and the electric power industry, develop renewable sources of energy, and reduce energy consumption in industry as well as by utilities and municipal infrastructure. The cluster brings together the potential of the traditionally sound domestic fundamental research in fuel and energy and young entrepreneurs seeking to make money from energy efficiency solutions as well as Russian and international industrial companies on the one hand and venture capitalists on the other. SUCCESS STORIES:

• Novas-SK is an environmentally clean technology for intensifying the extraction of hydrocarbons by subjecting the layers to plasma impulses. The technology can be used both in vertical and horizontal oil and natural gas wells.

• RRT is a highly efficient production process for making high octane components of Euro-5 environmentally friendly gasoline. The technology delivers catalytic reactors and rectification systems in a single package.

• Aero-protection is an integrated high efficiency solution for removing particulates and microorganisms from the air inside of buildings and structures of any kind as well as inside of vehicles.

• Elton offers supercapacitors for energy storage systems that can be used for energy regeneration in electric and hybrid transport, metro, railways; energy storage for cold start of heavy duty vehicles in low temperatures.

• TSPC offers protective and functional coatings and technologies for saturating them in order to protect against corrosion, erosion and hydraulic abrasion. These systems can be used, among other things, in the power, oil and gas sectors.

The grant was an important source of additional financingand allowed us to bring the basic technology to the level of a competitive product, which at the moment is popular in Russiaand abroad. Apart from that, the Foundation aided the searchfor a strategic partner for further development. In general,resident status makes communication with potential investorsmuch easier and helps to overcome traditional skepticism andprejudices against innovations.The implementation of our technology will lead to morerational subsurface resource exploration, improve oil and shalegas recovery and increase recoverable hydrocarbon reserves.

MARKET POTENTIAL /The global market for “smart” glass,which includes the product underdevelopment, will amount to USD 1.9 billion in 2013. The expected growthrate of the market is 12.8% per year(estimated BCC Research).
