CLERGY NEWSLETTER Give us a break... As you probably know, I have been off since 5
th December with a fractured patella. No fun! However,
I’ve had such kindness shown me that it almost compensates for the sorrow of missing all the Christmas
services. Thank you, sincerely.
I intend to try to get more physical exercise this year - my standard New Year Resolution! But I can’t
yet: at the time of writing, I still have the plaster cast on. So I’ve been doing mental exercises instead:
crosswords and easy reading first, then on to some more demanding stuff. And I’ve been looking at the
Bible.
On Desert Island Discs, the castaway was always given the Bible and Shakespeare. Today people might
make different choices, but in fact those two books are brilliant resources for reflection, and are as full of
relevance to us today as they were to our ancestors. We have dozens of quotes from them in our everyday
language – like ‘No peace for the wicked,’ (Isaiah 57 v21) and ‘Too much of a good thing,’ (As You Like
It Act 4 sc 1). Just opening the Bible at random can produce results if we reflect on what we read both in
its own context and in ours.
I am often asked what relevance this ancient text has in our post-modern society – there, you see, I said
I’d been exercising my mind! My answer is that it holds the big story of the human relationship with God
from ancient times to two millennia ago. Importantly, it’s also a signpost to the future, telling us about
that movable time called ‘now’. The Old Testament people were as rebellious, fractious and selfish as we
are – and as godly, generous and brave too. So were the New Testament people. Their story helps us
understand ourselves because they were just like us. Crucially, it helps us understand how to relate to God
and to each other in peace.
Dipping randomly into the Bible, then, I landed on this text from Paul’s first letter to Timothy:
‘Train yourself in godliness, for while physical training is of some value, godliness is valuable in
every way, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.’ How apt! We don’t need to fret about joining a gym – but we do need to work to keep our good Christian
spirit in peak condition. That means reflecting on our own actions and thoughts, and those of others,
measuring them against our Bible values. The kindness and care shown to me during my recovery are a
good place for me to start.
My prayer for us all, then, is this: Lord, help us to give ourselves time to be open to you in our lives.
Strengthen us to give ourselves a break from our relationship with ourselves, and to make a lasting
one with you. Amen.
With best wishes, Jane Kennedy: Associate Priest

WAITROSE TOKENS FOR BOWLS CLUB
Hi Everyone Great News!
I have just heard from Waitrose that they will be including us in their Community Matters Scheme for
February.
To those that have not used Waitrose, this is their way of giving funds to the local community. Every
month they split £1000 between three local clubs or charities. The way they decide on who gets what
depends on the number of tokens placed in the relevant bin in the Lutterworth store.
So please visit Waitrose as many times as you can and place the token you are given at the check-out in
the South Kilworth Bowls Club bin, the more tokens the more money we get!! It doesn't matter how
much you spend, £2 or £200 still gets one token.
Even if you don't use Waitrose for your main grocery shop please call in and buy a newspaper or have a
coffee as often as you can during February and pop your token in our bin.

MA-MITES TODDLER GROUP LATEST Following on from last month's update, we are pleased to report that we have managed to arrange a
monthly Ma-Mites session, most of which will include a Boogie Bods music event.
For anyone who doesn't know, Ma-Mites is a baby/toddler/pre-school group held in South Kilworth
village hall on Tuesdays, 10-11.30am. Until recently it was held weekly, but declining numbers have led
us to reduce this to monthly. It will now be held on the FIRST Tuesday of the month (with the exception
of April when there will be no Ma-Mites, due to clashing with Easter school holidays).
We have a large hall, with lots of toys for all ages, and tea/coffee/biscuits for adults.
Boogie Bods provide music and movement for young children, involving plenty of dancing around and
singing.
The dates are as follows:-
Feb 5th Ma-Mites 10-11.30am
March 5th Ma-Mites 10am, Boogie Bods 11-11.45am
May 7th Ma-Mites 10am, Boogie Bods 11-11.45am
June 4th Ma-Mites 10am, Boogie Bods 11-11.45am
July 2nd Ma-Mites 10am, Boogie Bods 11-11.45am
The cost of these sessions is £2 per child. Do come along, it'll be great fun and we'd love to see some
new faces!
For further information please contact Rachel 07710 381533 or Sue 07770 748608.
LUNCHEON CLUB The January luncheon club meeting was postponed because of the bad weather to Thursday 7
th February.
Hoping that everyone will be able to make this date and that the conditions have improved.

NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL We have started the new term by welcoming Miss Ferrara to Year 5/6.
All children in the school now have a log in to "mathletics", an online maths learning system which
children can log in to at home and school. It allows the children to compete against other children across
the globe. Last week Miss Warwick's class were 35th in the UK!
We all enjoyed an assembly delivered by " Mad Science" last week and have now arranged for an after
school science club run by them. We are really pleased about this as currently the school is working
towards the "Primary Science Quality Mark" in recognition of the science work that we already do. If any
one knows of a "scientist " who would be willing to talk to the children about aspects of their work please
contact the school on 01858575307.

FROM THE CHAIR OF GOVERNORS, SOUTH KILWORTH
PRIMARY SCHOOL It has been a challenging time for the school with the snowy weather, which forced an early closure on
the first day of snowfall. The decision to close or remain open is an individual choice for each school to
make and the safety of the children and staff is the first and foremost priority. Closing the school causes
near chaos for many parents who have to make sudden, unplanned alternative arrangements in bad
weather, as witnessed on the news by the outrage of many parents across the country after a weekend of
heavy snow. All schools will endeavour to remain open whenever possible and South Kilworth was one
of a few local schools who achieved this.
Some parents and parishioners will remember actively supporting the school and Parish Council several
years ago in campaigning to get the Walcote Road gritted. Prior to this, the hill outside the school was
often impassable for several days. Since being gritted, Walcote Road has been much safer for all drivers
and has enabled staff to arrive in the morning and the school to remain open more readily.
I would like to take this opportunity to give a huge thanks to the teachers and staff of South Kilworth
Primary School, all of whom have made it in to work every day and were determined that the snow would
cause as little disruption as possible to the children's normal school day. I am very reassured by your
efforts and the pupils are extremely fortunate to have a team of such determined and dedicated teachers
and staff.
Thank you,
Melanie Aram.
EVER THOUGHT ABOUT BECOMING A PARISH COUNCILLOR? We have a vacancy on the Parish Council, and we’d really like to hear from anyone who might be
interested in getting involved.
Being part of the Parish Council initially involves one evening a month with the odd email or
conversation between meetings. It can remain at that, or if you want to get more involved beyond that
commitment there is plenty of opportunity to pick up greater responsibility once you’ve gained a little
experience.
If you might be interested and would like to understand more about what being a Parish Councillor entails
then please get in touch with us via [email protected]
SK NEWS AGM The South Kilworth News annual general meeting will be held on Wednesday 6
th March at Croft Acre,
The Belt at 7.30pm.
SOUTH KILWORTH W.I. At our first meeting of the year members were taught by Sheila Jones to make “Favour Boxes”.

Following last year’s successful meeting, this February we are once again welcoming the session
drummer Dougie Wright.
This is, once again, an open meeting. Entrance is free with refreshments provided. Come along and listen
to Dougie and his drums! Everyone is very welcome.

WIND FARM COMMUNITY FUND UPDATE I expect the jungle drums have been rumbling and that some readers already know of the news about the
wind farm grant.
Well, I can confirm that Michael Murphy and I (as Chair and Vice Chair of the Community Interest
Company) signed the Grant Funding Agreement with the wind farm developer, Messrs Vattenfall , on the
16th
January 2013.
We await the return of our copy of the contract, signed by Messrs Vattenfall, which will confirm the
contract is formally in existence.
The CIC has also successfully opened its bank Current Account at the Nat West in Lutterworth – so we
have somewhere for the £44,000 to go (rather than under Michael’s mattress..........!)
I will be forwarding grant application forms in the next day or so to those who expressed an interest in
receiving a form, at the fund launch meeting last year.
Also, the Parish Council at its February meeting will be looking at the constitution of the sub group to
review grant allocations and make recommendations to the Council.
Ernie Roberts
(ED update: Grant application forms have been issued since receiving this notice. Suggest anyone who
requires one but has not received it contacts Ernie Roberts or the Parish Council.)

SOUTH KILWORTH BIRDS Birding on Foot It never ceases to amaze me just how many bird species are on our doorstep. On three occasions during
January I have completed the same circuit taking me down The Belt, across the golf club and back up
through North Kilworth to see how many bird species I could clock up.
There were some noticeable absences from the list (probably caused by the change in the weather as all
three walks were done post the snow arriving). I did however manage to clock up a respectable 40
species. The highlights for me were:
• A small flock of tree sparrows frequenting the trees and gardens at the end of the Belt.
• A peregrine hunting over the golf club.
• A snipe on several on all occasions in the ditches on the 11th
and 14th
holes.
• A barn owl hunting along North Road (in daylight).
Other Reports this Month
I have had a few messages / conversations
about birds in the village this month – thanks
to all who have taken the time to tell me about
their sightings. These records include reed
bunting, barn owl, jay (possibly the same birds
seen in seen in several places), 15 blackbirds
in one garden at the same time and an over
wintering blackcap.

WASoSK’s UPDATE Apologies to all those parishioners who have missed our regular contributions, unfortunately the timing
of the WASoSK meetings does not fit conveniently with the copy date for the SK News.
Fear not however we have been meeting regularly, on 30th
November we were finely entertained by Tim
Holmes where we were treated to our first seasonal offering of turkey. At our “Christmas come early”
meeting we were treated to whisky from the Glenlivet stable and also Blair Athol ( see tasting notes
below)
More importantly we discussed the wider needs of the village and in particular concerns were raised
about the new recycling initiative of Harborough district council. We lamented the relegation of our old
friend the “green bin” who robbed of its cardboard will now only see occasional and seasonal use. The
new usurper raised certain health and safety questions particularly the sense of mixing so many items and
chancing the breakage of glass bottles dropped from such a height.
On the 21st December we were all expecting the world to end! Luckily it didn’t so we were all able to
adjourn to David Burds. A rather lively evening was complimented by some extra special offerings
including a 25yr old whisky from Port Ellen, a distillery now defunct, a 1998 Edradour cask strength and
an old WASoSK favorite the Balvenie Golden Cask. Given our lucky escape from Global melt down, and
perhaps because some of us were breaking up early for Christmas, thoughts turned to the concept of our
take on a whisky Nirvana. For those of us that woke the next morning on a strange sofa there was a
momentary thought that perhaps the world had truly ended! However slowly snippets of late night / early
morning plans for a summer village event resurfaced. More of this later.
Finally much of the societies energies have been taken up with organizing the 2nd
annual SK Burns
supper, which was held on the 25th
January. Once again this event seemed to be enjoyed by all, indeed yet
again the night was over subscribed. It was particularly poignant to see David Burd addressing the Haggis
(and remembering his words this time) and lovely to see people up dancing. It was noted that those that
made the effort to get up and dance appeared to enjoy themselves even more than those standing at the
side.
Tasting Notes The Glenlivet: The Master Distillers Reserve A real festive mix with hints of liquorice, chocolate fudge and orange with tangy marzipan nuts and spice
to finish
Blair Athol 12 yr old Lemon and limes on the nose with a nutty sweetness leading to a salty bitter finish
The Edradour 1998 Natural Cask strength An extremely well balanced smoked honey porridge nose with soft spicey alcohol sweetness on the palate
The Provenance Port Ellen 1983 This increasingly rare offering exhibited a gentle citrus smokiness followed by a sweet gun oil and burnt
smoke
And Finally Another fine year for the WASoSK, who can be rightly proud of hosting another fine village event. This
has led to some exciting proposals that we have started to discuss with other like-minded groups within
the village and are formulating plans for a village event. So to all of you who like fun, games and a bit of
a party keep the August Bank Holiday Weekend free!!!!
Rob Burd
EDITORIAL So sorry WASoSKs that the copy date is inconvenient to your meetings but the end / beginning of the
month seems the best time to issue a monthly newsletter. I understand that WASoSKs cannot move Burns
Night but maybe there could be some fluidity on their other meeting dates ? Enjoyed Burns Night at the
Village Hall and thought fizz (for those that wanted it) instead of whisky was a nice touch for the toast.

RECENTLY ELECTED POLICE AND CRIME COMMISSIONER’S DRAFT PLAN Police and Crime Commissioner Sir Clive Loader is set to unveil his draft plan for tackling crime and reducing the number of victims in Leicestershire over the next four years. He will be formally presenting his plan to members of the Leicestershire Police and Crime Panel next week (Wed January 30) along with his proposals for the Police budget. The Panel has until 8 February to respond to the budget, and five days to respond to the Plan.
The draft plan will be available on the Commissioner’s website http://www.leics.pcc.police.uk/Planning-and-Money/Police-and-Crime-Plan.aspx where members of the public have until 10 March to send Sir Clive their comments. The feedback from both public and partners will be used to help shape a refined plan due to be issued in September, which will also take account of changes to funding processes, the impact of savings strategies and new commissioning plans.
Sir Clive commented: “This draft Police and Crime Plan reflects my vision for policing Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, and also the hopes and expectations of the people who live in our communities.
“I hope to receive some constructive feedback from the Panel when we meet and, meantime, would very much like to hear from members of the public as to what they think. Development of the plan has consumed both me, and my team, over the last two months and now we feel that it is ready to present to the panel, our partners and most importantly the public for their views.
