Fasting requires that only one full me be take per day. Two other smaller meals may be taken during the day to maintain physical strength, but these two meals together should not equal a full meal in quantity. Fasting obliges all those who have reached the age of 18 and continues to oblige until age 59. Those not specifically obliged to fast are encouraged to join in the discipline of fasting to the extent that they are able. Abstinence is not eating meat on a particular day. Abstinence obliges all those who have reached the age of 14 and continue throughout their entire life. Those not specifically obliged to abstain from eating meat are encouraged to join in this discipline to the extent that they are able. Ash Wednesday (February 17) and Good Friday (April 2) are days of fast and abstinence. The Fridays in Lent (February 19, 26; March 5, 12, 19, 26) are days of abstinence. A Different Type of Lent The ongoing health guidelines needing to be followed during the pandemic will impact our parish Lenten worship and prayer life. Among the noticeable differences will be ways in which the imposition of ashes takes place on Ash Wednesday, the Stations of the Cross on Fridays, palm distribution on Palm Sunday, and offering remote rather than in-person Lenten programs. Stations of the Cross During the Fridays in Lent, our parish will be praying the Stations of the Cross (Via Crucis) after the 12:15 pm and 7:00 pm Masses; The Way of the Cross with Pope Francis will be used. This traditional Lenten devotion commemorates the 14 stops along the Via Dolorosa ("the way of sorrow") by recalling Jesus' journey from Pilate's court and the praetorium to Calvary and to the tomb.
