The information contained within thisbrochure will give you a flavour of theCollege as you approach the nextimportant stage in your education.Obviously you will be keen to achievethe best possible examination results atthe culmination of your A Level courses,and I can assure you that you willreceive high-quality teaching in adisciplined, academic environment hereat the College. There will also be a widerange of extra curricular opportunitiesavailable to you.

St Bede’s is renowned for its excellentpastoral care, and in the Sixth Form youwill be supported by an experiencedteam of tutors and dedicated pastoralstaff. It is this caring and supportiveatmosphere that will enable you todevelop to your full potential.

Although academic achievement isimportant we aim to allow the individualto develop socially, morally andspiritually.

We are committed to providing anacademic Sixth Form in which eachstudent has the opportunity to fulfil his orher academic potential. Sixth Formclasses are taught in small groups offewer than 15 students to enablemaximum support from the teacher. Weoffer 26 subjects which can be studied inalmost any combination. Studentstypically study four subjects in the LowerSixth and three in the Upper Sixth.Dedicated teachers pride themselves on

being available when students need help.They are highly qualified and experiencedand will stretch the most able students,inspiring them to study beyond theconfines of the A level syllabus. The AQAExtended Project Award is available forstudents who wish to pursue a particulararea of study which goes beyond thebounds of the A Level curriculum. It is anexcellent preparation for HigherEducation, developing your skills as anindependent learner.

pastoral As a Sixth Former, you will belongto a small tutor group consisting ofan experienced tutor and aboutfourteen students. The tutor willguide and assist you on any matterof College life and monitor yourwell-being. The tutor will supportyou during your two years in theSixth Form and can be thought ofas a critical friend. They will workwith you to set targets and assessyour progress. Crucially, the tutorwill help you prepare youruniversity applications. However, ingeneral he or she will be your firstport of call if you need to discussany problem, however small.

The Heads of Sixth Form visit theSixth Form Common Room eachday and are always available to talkto students. They work with tutorsto ensure you make the most ofyour opportunities in the SixthForm and are well prepared for lifebeyond St Bede’s.

In the Sixth Form you will enjoy a wide range ofextra-curricular activities. Each Wednesdayafternoon is set aside for sport, stagemanagement or community service. We have anumber of very successful teams and you willbe encouraged to participate in these. However,if you would like to adopt a more leisurelyapproach, there are plenty of opportunities toenjoy sport socially. For girls, there’s netball,hockey, rounders, tennis, dance and athleticsand boys can enjoy football, rugby, cricket,tennis and athletics. Those who wish to cantake advantage of the facilities at Sale LeisureCentre.

You can also sign up for the Reach Outprogramme, Charity Committee or organiseyour own community programme. The Charity

Committee organises events throughout theyear to support a number of local andinternational Catholic charities, such asCornerstone, a centre for homeless people, andTLC, an orphanage in South Africa. Several ofour Sixth Formers have travelled to the TLCorphanage to work there caring for the children.

Our thriving Literary and Philosophical Societyoffers students regular debates, competitionsand guest speakers from the world of politics,science and the arts.

The College is renowned for its music anddrama. Many Sixth Form students are involvedin these important aspects of College life. Thereare plays, musicals, band nights, choirs, jazzbands and an orchestra.

religious lifeSt Bede’s is a Catholic community boundtogether by our Christian beliefs.Religious assemblies are a fundamentalpart of our living and working together.Prayer is a central theme, as is our carefor the disadvantaged and marginalised.

The Sixth Form takes a leading role in thecharitable activities which take place.Recent assemblies have included visitsfrom a missionary who helps streetchildren in Brazil, a group of Peruvianstudents and a personal reflection onorphanages in China.

Each student has the opportunity todeepen his or her own understanding oftheir faith through General Religionlessons. There are other opportunities topray together, at Mass, during tutor periodand at reconciliation services during Lent.

We seek to uphold the teachings of Jesusin our daily lives and in the way we treateach other, valuing each as an individual,created in God’s image and likeness witha unique combination of gifts and talentsto be discovered and developed for thegood of all.

You will beguided through theuniversity applicationprocess (UCAS) and will haveregular opportunities to discuss variousoptions with your tutor and the Sixth Form Team. From Spring Term in L6to October of U6 the Sixth Form Team organises events, includingworkshops and interviews to ensure that decisions are well-informed andto support you through the application process. These include:

A presentation for students and parents by a university admissions tutorA Higher Education Conference in College, featuring presentations on

university life and a workshop to help with your personal statementA visit to the UCAS conference at the MCCCUniversity open day visitsTutor review meeting with students and parents

The College enjoys a well-resourced library which includes an expansiveuniversity and careers section with staff always on-hand to assist.
