The Sixth Chicago Inf ernational Salon of Photography
EACH YEAR millions of visitors pass through the galleries of the Art Institute of Chicago and other great museums of the world. While
a few of the vast throng are creative artists, the majority are people from every walk of life who are a ttracted to the galleries by a love for the beautiful.
How many of these vis itors, s tanding in admiration before the can:vas or statue of some master have wished that they too might be able to express in a similar way their emotional reaction to some soul-stirring landscape, to the winning smile of a little child or perhaps to some simple arrangement of a few inanimate objects? But the pencil , the brush or the sculptor's clay seem mysterious instruments of a few privileged be-ings whose use is not to be attempted by others. The very simplicity of these instruments suggests a skill a nd perhaps a native ability that is granted to only a few
The camera, however is so w idely used today tha t it holds no terrors for the embryo artist and the wide public in terest in exhibits of photo-graphic art is due in no small d egree to the familiarity of our "average person" w ith the primary instrument of its creation. Where the admirer of a fine painting might say to himself, " I wish I could d o that; " when he s tands before a pictorial photograph he is more likely to say "Now why can't I make a p icture like that?" This more hopeful approach has made many a photographic artist.
While p ictorial photographs are by no mean s the simple product of a purely mechanical process, yet the various steps toward their com-pletion are not beyond the ability of any on e with an appreciation of beauty a nd with sufficient tenacity to acquire a relatively simple technique.
With the hope that these photographs, selected from some fourteen hundred entries from all parts of the world, may offer inspiration and encouragement to the users of cameras, we dedica te the Sixth Chicago International Salon of Photography our thirty -first annual exhibit, to those who w ill become The Pictoria l Photographers of Tomorrow
