Wiring the Rez: Innovative Strategies for Business Development Via E-Commerce CLE Conference

American Indian Nations and American Indians are pursuing business opportunities of every kind, including e-commerce and private-sector economies. One advantage of online businesses is that they address the physical challenges that mostly-remote Indian Country still faces today. E-commerce has created thriving economies for some, but they have also led to complicated issues where state, tribal and federal laws, policies and interests collide. Current efforts to operate and launch e-commerce endeavors raise economic and legal issues. Creating private-sector economies also raise a multitude of legal, economic and practical issues.

This conference explores the development of Tribal Digital Sovereignty, e-commerce and private-sector economies. Experts will examine the shifting political, legal and tax landscapes in Indian Country through modern business models including: online lending, online sports betting and the development of private-sector economies. We also review jurisdictional and regulatory complexities and the necessity of fostering dialogue with federal and state counterparts, and the implications to tribal sovereignty, and the need for tribes to finance and build infrastructures that facilitate economic growth while complying with appropriate federal guidelines. The conference will highlight the new book, Creating Private Sector Economies in Native America: Sustainable Development through Entrepreneurship (Cambridge University Press, 2019). Attorneys, scholars and professionals specializing in finance, tax, gaming, cybersecurity and economics will share strategies and business models for current and future e-commerce and private-sector enterprises to bridge the digital and economic divide.

Who should attend: Tribal leaders, tribal council members, lawyers practicing in Indian Country, economic and development experts, media developers, business, finance and technology specialists, virtual casino managers & executives, online vendors and entrepreneurs, regulatory experts, scholars and students.
