I will not Yield-A Poem on engineering, by Er. Vivek Abhyankar, Mumbai

I am 9000 yrs old,This is what Romans have told.

But still I am costlier than Gold;

especially, during earthquakes when the life gets Fold.

Guess who I am ?

As an Engineer, making me stable, is your AIM

Probably you have guessed correctly my Name !!

Yes a Structure is I am.

Concrete and Steel are many ornaments

Beams and columns are my ligaments

Walls and facades are my garments

Those who do not afford me, unfortunately have to stay with hutments

Structural engineering is your Wizard

But remember that the Life as SE is bit HARD

If you just USE me to earn FAME

Then mind well, soon from fraternity you will get a BLAME

* * *

At World Trade center, I got melt

Then only the danger of Blast could be Felt

This failure happed because absence of the Stiffening Belt

* * *

I may be strong . . . I may be week

Every think depends on the forces that you seek

Make my use at correct place

Then I am sure that the God will Bless

I will not yield I will not Yield

This what wicked fellows think about me on the field?

They load me at site beyond the limit

Even if the Engineer do not permit

Structural Engineers keep nurturing the Analysis Hobby

But nobody realizes the Pressure on Design codes from Business Lobby

This all cause me to YIELD

Which makes Common man to say Engineering is cruel filed !!

I get converted to huge mass of Debris

Politicians declare it as an Engineering Crisis

(When I fail)

Common man cries

Common man dies

Still it continues, giving bribes

. . .and even Knowledge is Fruit || 1 ||

Knowledge is Science |

. . .Knowledge is Arts ||Knowledge is Maths |

. . .and even Knowledge is STATs || 2 ||

Knowledge is Commerce |

. . .Knowledge is Engineering ||Knowledge is Sports |. . .and even Knowledge is Medicine || 3 ||

Knowledge is Clean |. . .this is what WIZARDs have seen |if try to sell or purchase it |. . .will take you to a 'BIN' || 4 ||

Knowledge is born genuine |. . .one has to know this ||

But one can acquire it |. . .by regular Practice || 5 ||

Knowledge can 'Command' |. . .& Knowledge can 'Demand' ||Politeness is the only way |. . .to keep 'Knowledge' in remand || 6||

A Book

A poem by

Once I saw, thousands of books |

On a street side, in the form of heap ||

I could quickly realize that |

No one had taken from it, yet a knowledge sip ||1||

A few books were, brand new |

And a few, very old ||Because of the knowledge in them |

They were like a gold ||2||

Some cover pages of these books |

had a big hole ||

But still these books |

Had never lost their goal ||3||

The hole was due to

White ants and termite |

Books with plastic cover

Never give such ugly sight ||4||

I saw one new book |

Laying on this road side ||

When I picked it up |

I found in-it coverage very wide || 5 ||

This book had a green cover |

And golden embossing ||

The content was also good

Because the author was Dr. Sadhu Singh ||6||

Books should be in a library |

And not on a road ||

I gifted good books |

Have you read any ?

I searched many books |

I circulated many ||

Old is Gold

An imaginary, yet hilarious poem from an old Structural Consultants office who has

recruited a fresh young engineer with a confused mind

IS-code was revised after twenty years

This lead to one Lazy engineer with his eyes full of tears

He said, Now I have to study again

Then he questioned, On this revision, what did BIS gain ?

Their was resistance from SUCH masses

But they never realized the PAST code crises

A Fresh engineer was busy in surfing Internet

Probably he was searching for a life-mate

Mobile was ringing

When HE was singing

The coffee was getting cold

When Internet was showing BOLD

* * *

In the cabin Boss was checking Design

But looking through the Glass at Trainee, boss said its a bad Sign

In HIS design the STAAD was used

Because of which the old Boss got confused

Boss was unable to use STAAD

On his inability the young engineer felt BAD

* * *

On this behavior

The boss got sever

The angry boss said, You do not know anything

He smiled and said, about me . . .why you are so keen

I will refer the book and do the design

Else you will compel me to resign

Boss roared and said Have you studied LSM

The young engineer laughed and said No. . .I was trying a Computer Game

The draughtsman was hearing

and started Hard Disc ClearingKnowing this further the old boss lost his BEARING

The old boss was not ready to learn computer due to work load

and HE had no inclination to read the new IS code

the boss said You make mistakes, in computer analysis

on this HE said but thats a global Practice

Boss said Manual practice is OLD and hence it is GOLD

Let me use WSM instead of LSM then coolly HE told

Boss started thinking on this reply

At end agreed Old is Gold always do not apply

It was a mid Summer

Poem by Er. Vivek G. Abhyankar

Structural Engineer (Mumbai)

It was a min Summer, when earth was shook

It was a festival day, when Latur experienced a Seismic Hook

On that night ground was facing hot

Birds and snakes came out, making discomfort a lot

Creeping sounds came, from earths womb

Poor farmers never knew, these forces are like atom-bomb

Sky became dark, trees were shiveringEarthquake energy gathered at Latur, was waiting for appearing

It was a mid night, when Latur was shook

30 seconds, 6.4 Richter scale, acted pretty crook

Stone houses and Bulky Roofs

With no sign of ductility fuse

Houses got crushed, lives got flush

Rain started pouring, making the earth slush

It was a mid Summer, twenty years backThe Same Latur has now developed a Political knack

Engineering Materials

Brick is brittle, Concrete has creep

Steel is stronger, yet its cost is deep || 1 ||

Aluminum allows, light weight structure

Yet difficult to shape, it also has a rupture || 2 ||

Plastic has a long, chain of polymer

But for environment has zero glamour || 3 ||

Use of Timber was, rejected due to termites

As it was not, seasoned properly under sunlight || 4 ||

Stone became stronger, laying under a mountain

Still environmental issues made it abandon || 5 ||

Old houses were made, from clay & bamboo

From this a very, few architects had a clue || 6 ||

Nature is nurturing, gives human freeWe human made it complex, under knowledge tree || 7 ||

We explored new materials, also some are due

We got confused, and could not select even a few || 8 ||

Alloys were developed by metallurgist

Use of alloys in a building, required a mind of a scientist || 9||

Tender specifications have become, large and thick

New materials qualify control, has leads to a strike || 10 ||

Construction chemicals has made the problem diverse

According to experts, its a time to think reverse || 11 ||

Durability Ductility, Strength & Stiffness

Beyond serviceability how to, fixup material weakness || 12 ||

Performance rating is the, new concept coming up ahead

Time will decide whether, the material make it crusade || 13 ||
