Dear Sitka Trail Works Members,
Each year the fall issue of “On the Paper Trail” is mailed to a very select
group of Sitkans. If you are receiving this newsletter it is because you
have made a donation at some time during the past three years.
THANK YOU.
2014 has been a year of milestones. Thanks to Allen Marine and Sitka
Sound Ocean Adventures, Trail Works members explored more places
than ever before. And the STW Board members lead the way. Our part-
nerships grew as STW worked with the Sitka Tribe of Alaska to address
issues around Fort Rousseau Causeway State Historical Park.
My heart burst with pride and joy when we celebrated the completion of
the Sawmill Creek Road improvements and the new separated pathway
along Silver Bay last week. What a tremendous asset for the community!
A safe and beautiful place for exercise for all levels of ability. We can’t
thank Senator Bert Stedman enough for making sure that Sitka got a
share of highway dollars that would have otherwise gone elsewhere in
the state.
As we approach fall, I grow thankful: for great members, a dedicated
Board and professional partners. Yes, there is a lot to be thankful for!
Deborah Lyons, Executive Director
In the MISSION room we set goals that support our mis-
sion to create, maintain and promote a diversified trail
system for a wide range of users. See the condensed
list at right. In our RESOURCES room we set our funding
and staffing goals. In our INTERNAL CAPACITY room we
set goals for operations, Board, staff and facilities. In
our EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS room we set goals for
marketing, communications, partnerships and reputa-
tion. One important goal for this year is 300 donor
households. As of today 190 households are current.
Can you help us meet this goal?
Each year the Sitka Trail Works Board members use the
January Board meeting to draft goals and objectives for
the coming year. Then it becomes a team effort to work
with our partner agencies to make sure the goals are
accomplished. We think of the Sitka Trail Works organi-
zation as the, “House we live in”. There are four rooms
in that house and each year we set goals to keep our
building strong. At the monthly Board meetings and the
annual meeting we assess our progress, make adjust-
ments and refocus. We learned this system from the
Foraker Group, an invaluable resource for nonprofits.
2014 Inside Sitka Trail Works—The Annual Goals List
ON THE PAPER TRAIL
Our brand new hike this year was a trip to the Salmon Lake
trail to visit the ethereally impressive stand of old growth
spruce located south of the lake. On our trip, we got a rare
good look at a perched goshawk actively scolding the interlop-
ers. Our hiking experience was greatly enriched by naturalist
Bill Foster and historian Matt Hunter. Two great Sitka Trail
Works members!
The weather gods advised us to reschedule the Mount Edge-
cumbe and Sea Lion Cove hikes. Rescheduling is time-
consuming, but so worth the effort when we finally get out on
a special hike. Hikers and donors, thank you for your patience.
Another memorable trip was the excursion led by Charles
Horan to bike across Kruzoff island and then hike down to the
beach on the outer coast. It was great fun and we learned a
flat tire repair kit is an essential item.

Executive Director Deborah Lyons
worked with Heather Riggs, the Depart-
ment of Defense Lands Investigator for
the Sitka Tribe of Alaska’s Natural Re-
source Protection program, to develop
warning signs about hazardous materi-
als that are in the intertidal zone of the
old landfill on Virublennoi Island. The
Tribe is conducting a clean up of the
intertidal areas of the Causeway. Thank
you Sitka Tribe of Alaska.
We especially wanted to warn the
public that the smooth “skipping
stones” are actually worn asbestos
tiles. These pieces should not, under
any circumstances, be drilled, broken
or abraded because they will release
chrysotile asbestos fibers. Tell your
friends!
The US Army Crops of Engineers is
developing a remediation plan and will
hold a public meeting in October.
