The Okayama Works is in the city of Bizen, which is in the southeast

of Okayama Prefecture. To the east is Katakami Bay, while to the

west is the Yoshii River, one of the three biggest rivers in Okayama.

The area boasts numerous famous places and crafts, including

Bizen pottery and Osafune swords in arts and crafts, and the

Shizutani School, a national treasure. NTN opened the Okayama

Works in 1972. Its four plants manufacture tapered roller bearings,

axle bearings and constant velocity

joints. NTN has the largest share of

the global market for axle bearings,

and the Okayama Works functions as

the mother factory for these products,

providing overseas plants with

production technology guidance and

support.

The works holds workplace tours for employees’ families. After touring the plants and trying their hand at assembling products, participants watch an animation on global warming. A balance ball is used to demonstrate how families can cut their CO2 emissions. The tours are short, but we believe that they can interest people in conserving the environment.

activities• Supported the “Kayano Highlands

tree-planting initiative”• Helped send local junior high school

students overseas for training• Held workplace tours for our employees’

families• Took part in the “Tenryu River Water

The Nagano Works is surrounded by Japan’s Central and

Southern Alps and is in the beautiful natural settings of

Minowa-machi in the Ina Valley, which has the Tenryu River

flowing through the center. NTN established this facility in 1984.

We retained a natural forest on the premises, where we

make a diverse lineup of eco-products, ranging from bearings

to automotive parts and transport

equipment. We take advantage of

the beautiful and clean environment

of Kamiina in harnessing precision

machining technologies to create

high-quality products.

In 2006, we began participating in Nagano Prefecture’s “Adopt-a-Forest” program. At the “NTN Kigyo no mori” in neighboring Komagane, employees and their families trim trees and cut underbrush in ongoing efforts to help reduce CO2 emissions. We have received CO2 statements from the mayor of Komagane over the past three years, planting weeping cherry trees to commemorate these achievements.

NTN Kongo Corporation is in Kawachinagano, at the foot of

Mt. Kongo, through which the pristine Ishikawa River flows.

We started producing ball bearings in 1925. We became

part of the Group in 1961 as the result of a capital and

business alliance with Toyo Bearing Mfg. Co., Ltd, and we

were renamed NTN Kongo in 1989. Our main offerings are

radial ball bearings, clutch release

bearings, and bearing units, which

contribute to the prosperity of

modern society.

Bus tours of production facilities are arranged as part of Kawachinagano’s program to promote specialty manufacturing, and 20 local primary school students visited our site as part of that initiative. Hikari Seiki Industry Co., Ltd. is in Tenri, Nara, the historic heartland of Japan’s Yamato culture. This company supplies adapter for bearings and nut-related products to the NTN Group on an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) basis, and also markets products under the HKS brand. Hikari Seiki Industry is the sole adapters for bearings maker authorized to use JIS labeling, and leads the domestic market in terms of quality and share. It has delivered Seal wear rings for axle roller bearings used in Shinkansen bullet trains

since the commencement of service, and now supplies all bearing makers in Japan, including for the N700 series Shinkansen. The company also provides constant velocity joint cages and turning parts for outer rings to the NTN Group.

We have changed all lighting inside the plant to inverter-based fluorescent lights. We are testing the effectiveness of LED fluorescent lights, which could save even more energy. And we started collecting old books, CDs, DVDs, stamps, and other items in-house, supplying them to nongovernment organizations to support developing countries.

NTN Mie Corporation

NTN Mie Corporation is in Tado town, Kuwana. It is blessed

with especially beautiful natural scenery, with the Ibi, Nagara

and Kiso rivers in the area. Tado is located at the foot of Mt.

Tado in the south of the Yourou ranges that straddle Mie and

Gifu prefectures. We started operations at our first plant in

2004, our second in 2007, and our third in 2008. One key

feature of all three facilities is that

they engage in efforts to lower

environmental impact, having

installed solar panels and wind

power generators that they are

employing effectively as sources of

natural energy.

We participated in a cleanup campaign that the city of Kuwana launched through local government bodies. The 67 employees involved split into four groups to collect rubbish on public roads around the facility, filling 50 bags with nonburnable waste and another 50 bags of burnable waste.

November 2007

NTN Fukuroi Corporation was established in 2006 as an

environmentally friendly plant in Fukuroi City, which faces the

Enshunada marine area in the west of Shizuoka Prefecture.

To reduce our environmental impact, we have installed

innovative advanced processing and recycling technologies

and extensively use energy-saving facilities and natural

energy sources, notably wind and

solar power. We are NTN’s 3rd

domestic (and 14th worldwide)

constant velocity joint plant,

making everything from parts to

finished products.

As part of efforts to reduce CO2 emissions, we operate only the agitators on coolant pumps, which used to run daylong and even on holidays to prevent corrosion. We installed timer switches on compressors and water-cooling pumps. We also used valves to calibrate cooling water flows. In these ways, we reduced annual CO2 emissions by 110 tons.

NTN Bizen Corporation was established in April 2004 to make

bearings for turning equipment. It has the Okayama Plant in Akaiwa,

Okayama Prefecture, and the Bantan Plant in Nishiwaki, Hyogo

Prefecture. Around the Okayama Plant are expansive white peach

and grape orchards, which are signature agricultural products of the

prefecture. In spring, peach flowers blossom throughout the area.

Near the Bantan Plant, the Kako River flows amid the greenery of

the Tanba mountains. The area is also

noted for its farms for Kurodasho

wagyu beef, which is the origin of Kobe

beef. Both plants together employ

around 160 people, and engage in

bearing-turning processes.

All employees undertake initiatives to cut electricity consumption as part of energy conservation efforts. Our main focuses have been to 1) install energy-saving compressors, 2) upgrade air distribution pipes, and 3) engage in savings initiatives to reduce power usage. As a result of these efforts, we cut power consumption per production unit by 14% from the fiscal 2008 level.

NTN Houdatsushimizu Corporation • Installed a wind power generator

• Constructed a plant incorporating energy-saving features

• Laid a lawn for planting trees• Prevented dust pollution by sowing

grass on bare land• Conducted cleanup activities in areas

around the company

NTN Houdatsushimizu Corporation was established in 2008 in the

middle of Ishikawa Prefecture. To the east is Mt. Hodatsu, the highest

peak on the Noto Peninsula, and to the west is the Nagisa Driveway,

which links to Hakui. It is an historical site, where the remains of the

Jomon culture were first excavated in Ishikawa Prefecture. We are

located near local companies with outstanding casting technologies,

and are thus in a good location for making bearings for large wind

power generators, for which high

quality is essential. We aim to build

a presence by expanding sales to

industrial machinery manufacturers

and contributing actively to the local

community.

We installed a 10-kilowatt wind power generator to symbolize our position as a maker of bearings for such equipment. We thereby reduced our CO2 emissions by 170 kilograms monthly, and cut our monthly electricity bill by several tens of thousands of yen. We received a subsidy from the town of Hodatsushimizu for placing its logo on the wind turbine.

NTN Hakui Corporation is in Hakui, Ishikawa Prefecture in

the west of the Noto Peninsula. We were established in 2007

to turn ultra-large bearings in response to a growing need to

make essential ultra-large bearings for wind power facilities

to conserve the environment and state-of-the-art high-

speed CT scanners and other medical treatment, for which

demand has expanded. We can

comprehensively handle casting,

turning, and heat treatment

processes, and are pushing ahead

with efforts to cut costs, shorten

lead times, and otherwise improve

production efficiency.

We actively participate in local activities such as weeding along the banks of the Yoshizaki River. Because rice paddies are near our facilities, we implement rigorous management processes to prevent leaks of pollutants and properly treat industrial waste. We also turn site lights off at nights to prevent harm to rice growth during summer. NTN Hakui

NTN Head Office is on the east side of Yotsubashi Street in Osaka’s

Nishi Ward. Zelkova and cherry blossom trees line neighboring

streets, and also nearby is Utsubo Park, famed for its beautiful rose

garden. The area abounds in nature all year round. The head office

houses administrative departments for NTN and is the oversight hub

for domestic and overseas Group companies, collecting, managing,

and disseminating information. Every year, we participate in the

government’s Cool Biz and Warm Biz

initiatives, which entail wearing the

right clothes for the seasons to reduce

energy consumption. We participate

in Osaka’s monthly “Beautification

Days” by carrying out neighborhood

cleanups.

From 2008, we installed AED (automated external defibrillators) in the first floor lobby for first aid purposes. To reduce environmental impact, we deployed multifunctional copiers requiring ID-based access. As a result, we printed fewer pages and decreased purchased paper volume by 12% from fiscal 2008.
