Site GallerySheffield’s International Centre for Contemporary Art

Site Gallery presents the exhibition Sol LeWitt: Artist’s Books, the only UK venue of this international exhibition. Featuring more than 80 publications by LeWitt, the exhibition will be a chronological display of the artist’s visual books dating from 1967 to 2002, providing a rare opportunity to see a complete overview of LeWitt’s work in this form.

During the course of the exhibition, one of LeWitt’s wall drawings will be completed over the large gallery wall. Throughout his career, LeWitt produced more than 1,200 wall drawings, each work undertaken from a set of instructions and executed by LeWitt and other artists, his drafting team and volunteers. Continuing this tradition and working from his original rules Wall Drawing #960 will be produced, allowing visitors to see the work in progress.

This project has been brought together by RGAP (Research Group for Artists Publications – www.rgap.co.uk) an independent artist-led organisation now based in Sheffield, in partnership with Site Gallery, Sheffield Hallam University, the Estate of Sol LeWitt, and the curators Giorgio Maffei and Emanuele De Donno at ViaIndustriae, Italy

This project is supported by Arts Council England

For her first solo exhibition in a UK public gallery, Site Gallery has commissioned a new body of work from the Cypriot born artist, Haris Epaminonda. Simultaneously an exhibition of new work is being shown at Tate Modern (28 May – 20 August). Epaminonda works mainly with collage, video and installation. The point of departure for her paper collages is found material from books and magazines from the 1950s and 60s.

Her videos are composed out of disparate found film footage as well as the artist’s own filmed sequences. Epaminonda’s moving images are in many instances overlapping or juxtaposed with one another so that threads of potential meaning (political utopias, gender, cultures of collecting) weave in and out of each other and thus evoke a dreamlike distant world.

In the 1950s and 60s, from which the found footage often derives, the idea of progress and fascination for the future seemed filled with both hope and fear, and Epaminonda’s work moves between a real and a potential or illusory past/future. This creates a poetic, surreal and uncanny maze as if the found and reworked material is a loophole in time.
