SISTERS INCORPORATED • MARCH 2016 ISSUE FIVE

Last year flew by and before we knew it, 2015 had come to an abrupt

end; and now, 2016 is passing by in a flash. The saying goes ... ‘time waits

for no man’, and every passing day is evident of this. We reflected on the past

year, and what did we see? Some of our residents found themselves in their own

homes, starting afresh with their kids. Some opted to go back to their situation. And this is

the circle of life.

We did achieve many practical, and what some may call

materialistic, things; but on a deeper level, so much was

achieved within the organisation, within the staff and

within yourselves.

I’ve come to learn that in this field we need to have a

heart of compassion, even with one’s self. We reach out to

so many women, and we give so much of ourselves and

in the process we don’t always nurture ourselves.

To me, the meaning of compassion can be summed up

like this:

C ... Caring

O ... Objective

M ... Mindful

P ... Polite

A ... Able

S ... Sensitive

S ... Safe or Secure

I ... Integrity

O ... Observant

N ... Nice or Nurture

I look forward to assisting and helping the

many women and children coming through our gates

and allowing our shelter to be a beacon of hope in their

darkest hour.

Ikey Tigers visit for the sixth consecutive yearThe Ikey Tigers – a well groomed group of guys coming out

to do community work, but with so much respect and

discipline. The biggest achievement from their visit was

that they moved the piano to the dining room and unpacked

the container with so much zest. We cannot forget the other

guys who washed the windows, cut the grass, etc.

Their ended the day off by serenading our ladies and

performing their theme song. This was followed by a visit by

Santi Britz from Varsity Cup, who left with a really good

impression of Sisters Incorporated and she will be sharing

the day’s activities at the launch of the Varsity Cup.

Matric ballOnce again, Sisters Incorporated was lucky enough to have

a lovely young lady who completed matric. On the night of

her Matric ball, the ladies from Gorgeous Me came out to

do her makeup. The only thing we can say is that she looked

GORGEOUS (no pun intended)!!!

Parenting Skills workshopsThree positive parenting skills sessions were facilitated by

the Parent Centre last year on 19, 26 November and

3 December. Eight women completed the three sessions

from 7pm to 9pm on Thursday evenings.

Two women were not parents yet. One, a 19-year old

appreciated the opportunity to share and was held well

within the group. The content for the three sessions covered

the following topics:

❤ session 1: Understanding children’s behaviour

❤ session 2: Understanding children’s feelings

❤ session 3: Building children’s self–esteem

All eight attendees received a certificate on completion of

the workshop on 10 December 2015. It was a proud moment

for all of them because they committed to and completed

the workshops.

We also acknowledge them for their perseverance.

Every single day, I would advocate to stop abuse against women and children,” says Delene Roberts.

Thank you for the wonderful Christmas, really appreciated it. It was better than

expected and Levy also enjoyed it, thanks for gifts and everything. You guys brought

Christmas to us and it was a pleasure to see it through Levy’s eyes. Kim

Christmas 2015

Another blessed and joyful time!

‘Father Christmas’ arrived early to spoil everyone with gifts.

It was wonderful to see the expression on the children’s and

mom’s faces when they received their gifts. Lunch was

awesome along with the good spirit everyone was in. A lot

of appreciation was shown by the ladies. Their happiness

describes the reason for the season. Karin Matthews

I would like to thank management and staff

as well as whoever was involved in making

this Christmas so special.

I fall short of words to let you know how

thankful and grateful I am for all the

wonderful gifts that were given but above all

the love that is generated amongst the rest

of you guys.

This is a Christmas I will never forget.

I will take these memories with me near and

far, not forgetting the overwhelming care

and concern that was shown.

Once again thank you from the bottom of

my heart and may God bless you always.

Colleen

I would like to thank you for everything you’ve done for me

and my mother. Thank you for always being there for us.

I really appreciate it. And thank you for my Christmas

present. I love it. DanelleGroote Schuur Lions Club brought gifts for the children

It is with great thanks that I write this note.

Thank you for the wonderful Christmas lunch and all

the gifts that you availed to me. Thank you seems to

be so small, but you have no idea how special you

make me feel. Please be reminded that all your hard

work and effort does not go unseen. Many thanks and

God bless. Venecia

Sitting here at reception, reading and typing the above letters just brings the

kind of emotions that is indescribable. No amount of monetary value can obtain

this kind of humbling, positive emotions.

Knowing that you are contributing to making positive, lasting memories to people

that have seen the ugly side of life and human behaviour just takes your breath

away and lifts your spirits to the highest of heights and you know that God’s hand is at

work here.

Ten years ago I would never have imagined that I would be involved with such an

inspiring, life changing organisation (and no, it’s not always fun). Thank you Sisters

Incorporated for allowing me, through my voluntary work, to help with the healing

process of others. My problems seem insignificant to what others are experiencing

on a daily basis.

May you all be blessed abundantly and go from strength to strength in the name

of Jesus. Amen.

My love to you always. Lauren31 December 2015

I want to give my sincere thanks and appreciation for

everything that I have received since I arrived on the

doorstep – in the form of a roof over my head, food and

drink and the special lunch that was prepared on

Christmas. The special effort that went into the preparation

of the décor, food and gifts but most importantly for me,

the support provided by the staff, Karin and Nydean under

the direction of Delene.

I thank you from the bottom of my heart. My time here

thus far has been enriching. May you all be further blessed

with Peace, Joy and Prosperity for 2016. Anonymous

As the manager, I have no words, other than thank you to each and every donor who made this Christmas special. May you be touched by the letters written by our residents.”

Staff lunch“I’ve come to learn that being a part of this awesome group of

ladies means there is always a reason to have good clean

fun. This time around we ended up at Dunes Restaurant in

Hout Bay for our staff lunch. Thank you to our board ... we

acted like tourists in our own city,” enthuses Delene.

In January 2016, Karin celebrated NINE years with

Sisters Incorporated and we celebrate her.

Health-wise, 2015 wasn’t easy, but it was worth it and we are

looking forward to what God still has in store for Karin.

Celebrating Karin!
