The Catholic bishops of Iowa have issued the following statement
on the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to require states to license a
marriage between two people of the same sex:
"The U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on marriage saddens us. To
make something legal does not mean that it is true or good. Take,
for example, the ruling that legalized abortion.
Notwithstanding this ruling, we will continue to lead people to
live under the Gospel, which requires us to be humble and loving
to all others, regardless.
The Gospel also compels us to defend and share with others
Jesus’ teaching on marriage, which re-asserted the original plan of
creation, and which no one can rend asunder:
One man and one woman who freely give themselves to each
other in a permanent and exclusive partnership, to be helpmates
for each other, and to be open to conceiving and bringing up
children.
We believe that this understanding of marriage does no harm; on
the contrary, it serves the common good of society, as well as the
good of family life, and of children.
We still expect that true religious liberty, enshrined in our
Constitution, and won at such a dear price, will be honored,
allowing us to be guided by a faith-formed conscience in our
teaching and practice."

Catholic Charities has offered mental health counseling services
to individuals, couples, families and groups for over 40
years. Problems are a normal and unavoidable part of life.
Much of the time problems come and go and people are able to
resolve them on their own or with the help of friends and
family. But for everyone, there are times when life has a way of
coming up with a problem that doesn't go away or seems so big
and difficult that professional counseling is needed. Catholic
Charities is there to help in those times with social
workers, mental health therapists and marriage and family thera-
pists trained to help solve these types of problems.

Catholic Charities COUNSELING
The parish provides an opportunity
at Masses each weekend for
ministries to promote their service,
recruit new members or just
educate the parish to ministry
possibilities. A display table is
made available, space in the
bulletin is an option and the ministry makes an announcement at
each Mass. Ministries who are in the “spotlight” for the weekend
must be present for ALL Masses that weekend. To schedule a
weekend for your ministry contact the parish office (we only
allow one ministry to spotlight each weekend).
Our THANKS to Fr. Jerry Kopacek
for celebrating Eucharist with us this weekend.
God’s blessings on him and his ministry.

Iowa Catholic Radio is a resource I rely on for important news,
inspiration and prayers. At 9:30 am they pray the rosary and at 3
pm they play a beautiful sung version of the Chaplet of Divine
Mercy. During the evening drive time they air Catholic Answers
where anyone may call in and ask questions about the church.
Always lively exchanges. Find this station at 1150 AM, 88.5 FM
or 94.5 FM on your radio. —Clare Bills
The Sacredness
of God's Handiwork
How do we live in creation? Do we relate to it as a place full of
"things" we can use for whatever need we want to fulfill and
whatever goal we wish to accomplish? Or do we see creation first
of all as a sacramental reality, a sacred space where God reveals
to us the immense beauty of the Divine? As long as we only use
creation, we cannot recognize its sacredness because we are
approaching it as if we are its owners. But when we relate to all
that surrounds us as created by the same God who created us and
as the place where God appears to us and calls us to worship and
adoration, then we are able to recognize the sacred quality of all
God's handiwork. —Henri Nouwen

Father Richmond Parish Farewell NEXT SUNDAY
9:30 am - at Coffee & Donuts
Lower Lounge
Please feel free to bring a tasty food item to share with everyone.
While the second Sunday is usually “Surprise Sunday” we will
provide some donuts and also have Fr. Richmond’s favorite: ice
cream! But other foods to complement the celebration would be
appreciated.
Our prayer board in the Gathering Space is located next to the
Story Wall and elevator. We invite you to place your prayers
and petitions for yourself or for loved ones, so all who pause
here may see and pray with you. In doing so we are not alone in
our prayers. As a community of faith we support one another
and we join others in lifting these needs up to the Lord.
Prayer cards (please use only these), pens and thumbtacks can
be found on the information table opposite the prayer board.

From time to time we are in need of someone, because of staff
sickness, vacation, meetings, etc., to answer the phone, greet
visitors and simply be a welcoming presence at the parish “front
desk” for a few hours. We like to keep a list of parishioners who
are willing to do this, so when a need arises we can start calling
and asking (begging!) for assistance for an hour or more when we
are short-handed.
If you think you could help and contribute to the parish, and we
could put you on the call list, please let Don Alexander know—
515-292-3810 or [email protected].
For those able to help, our priests will bless you each time they
come in and out of the office—lot of grace in this volunteer
ministry!
Parish Office Help http://usccb.org/bible/
When the sabbath came he began to teach in the synagogue, and many
who heard him were astonished. They said, “Where did this man get all
this? What kind of wisdom has been given him? What mighty deeds are
wrought by his hands! Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the
brother of James and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here
with us?” And they took offense at him. —Mark 6
Don’t we act the same way at times expecting God to work big
miracles for us. Whereas God’s plan is to help us change our
ways to become more generous, patient, loving and
understanding. God would like us to have more faith in His help
rather than thinking we can do it all by ourselves.
