He was a famed English writer, soldier, courtier, poet, and explorer.

Who is Sir. Walter Raleigh?

Sir. Walter Raleigh was born to a Protestant family in Devonshire, the son of Walter Raleigh and Catherine Champernowne.

•Lifespan - 1552 - 1618•Family - Father was a farmer, his half brother explorer Sir Humphrey Gilbert. He was also related to Sir Richard Grenville and Sir Francis Drake

•Education - Oriel College, Oxford•Famous for : The  Discovery of Guiana and establishing the Virginia colony of Roanoke Island in 1584

Known for having placed his cloak over a puddle in order to prevent Queen Elizabeth I from muddying her shoes.

1584 June 4, Virginia colony of Roanoke Island established by Sir Walter Raleigh.

July 22, 1587 - Sir Walter Raleigh backs (put money into) the first English Colony in North America (North Carolina) led by John White to the English Roanoke Colony.

Where did the name Virginia come from?

The name Virginia comes from an expedition sent by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1584 which recorded the name of the Roanoke Colony area's most powerful Native American chief, "Wingina," notified later that year by Queen Elizabeth I to "Virginia", noting her status as the "Virgin Queen."

He had introduced Ireland to potatoes from the New World.

He named Virginia. The men gathered

information about the Indians, the plant and animal life, and the land in general.

His literature and poetry is still well known.

Made smoking tobacco popular.
