Southern Oscilllation index (NCEP)

During El Nino:

SOI is low:

Tahiti minus Darwin is low, meaning that the pressure difference between them is reduced.

Therefore the trade winds are weaker during ENSO.

Note that Darwin and Tahiti anomalies are out of phase
