How do I qualify for a Subject Matter Waiver?
Majoring in the subject you want to teach does not
mean you have a subject matter waiver…
SAC STATE STUDENTS:
Meet with your program advisor to verify that you
are in an appropriate Subject Matter Program
(SMP)
If you are not in a SMP, what course work is needed
to qualify for an SMP
Program Options
The program offers options:
2 semester program begin in the fall
3 semester pre-credential program in the spring
Placements for student teaching will depend on the specific cohort into
which the student is accepted
Program coursework is held at the CSUS
campus
Additional Authorization: Option to get the Bilingual Authorization
added to your credential if you are fluent in a second language
Program Structures
Students admitted into the program are divided into smaller units called
“Cohorts”
8 week classes that build on each other through out the two semesters
A group of students accepted into the cohort progress through the program
together
Offers a community of support in which concern for individual students and
their development is the focus
TWO SEMESTER OPTION
The 2 semester option is designed for students who:
already have a significant amount of teaching experience
demonstrate the ability to assume teaching responsibilities at an
accelerated pace
The 2 semester program is intense, challenging (in coursework and
teaching responsibilities) and demanding (in time)
Students should be prepared to spend 8 am – 6 pm
(Mon-Thur) in field experiences, courses, lesson
planning, and preparing for teaching
Students in a 2 semester program MUST meet subject matter
requirements, Bachelor degree requirements, and complete ALL pre-
requisite courses prior to starting the program
THREE SEMESTER PRE-CREDENTIAL
The 3 semester Pre-Credential option is designed for students who:
May need to complete some subject matter requirements
Need to complete pre-requisite courses
Need additional classroom experience before beginning the credential
program
The 3 semester program:
1st Semester – Pre-requisite courses
HLSC 136
EDUC 100A/B
EDUC 170
2nd / 3rd Semester – Student Teaching and
Credential Coursework
Must complete the Teacher Preparation Program
Application for full program consideration for the fall
Pre-Requisite Courses HLSC 136
EDUC 100A/B
EDUC 170
The pre-requisite courses are NOT admission requirements, but they must be completed prior to starting the program
Take in a spring semester
Take in summer school before starting the two semester program
