Cross-ContaminationReduce Costs and Combat

To combat cross-contamination guidelines increasingly suggest that some items, such as adhesive tapes, should not be shared between patients.1,2 The National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards, (2011) address areas where improvement strategies exist that are evidence based and achievable. One key component of Standard 3 is to prevent patients from acquiring preventable healthcare associated infections.3

As a result, infection prevention-conscious facilities often dedicate a single roll of tape to each patient. With traditional rolls of tape, this results in up to 70-90% of each roll of tape being discarded.4 In other words, more than 3.2 kilometers of tape is wasted for every 1,000 patients discharged. To help reduce infection caused by cross-contamination and waste, 3M offers several tapes in single-patient-use rolls.

Single-patient-use roll

10-30%of each roll is used

70-90%of each roll is discarded

Traditional 9.1 meter

Using a dedicated roll of tape with each patient reduces the risk of bacterial transmission and cross-contamination.

How Many Single-Patient Use Rolls Will I Need? One waste study found “average tape usage was only 0.9 meters of a 9.1 meter roll 4.” Another waste study found that “average tape use was 1.8 meters of a 9.1 meter roll of tape 5 .” If your facility is similar to these, it will need one or two single-patient use rolls to replace a 9.1 meter roll.
