ABOUT SINGAPORE FLYER
• Dr. Kisho Kurokawa of Japan and DP Architects, Singapore developed the initial concept behind the Singapore Flyer's design with inspiration sparked off from various observation icons like the Eiffel Tower
• The entire construction of Singapore Flyer took exactly 2 years and 3 months
• Its ground breaking took place on September 2005 and Singapore Flyer became a permanent fixture on Singapore’s skyline in December 2007
• A high level of sophistication in engineering and technology was used to develop this S$240-million Giant Observation Wheel
• Standing at 165 metres and boasting an unobstructed 360 view, Singapore Flyer offers different perspectives of the dynamic Singapore landscape at every turn of the wheel

SpindleThe spindle is 2.6m in diameter, 25.25m long and weighs 180 tons. Manufactured in Japan, its assembly took about 5 months.

CablesA total of 112 cables attaches the rim to the spindle. Each cable weighs 4.5 tons, is 75mm in diameter and total weight is around 500 tons.

Drive Unit• The drive unit is made up of:
• An electro motor• A gearbox• Drive wheels• A speed controller
• Place of manufacture of Drive unit: Japan• There are a total of 24 drive motors•The drive wheels are driven by thegearbox and electro motor• The drive wheels are in contact with the rim drive rib, and the speed is controlled be the PLC speed controller
(PLC refers to programmable logic controller)

NUTS & BOLTS OF SINGAPORE FLYERAssembly of the Wheel• Singapore Flyer was assembled in “pies”. Seven “pies” make up Singapore Flyer
• It took about two weeks to set up one section of the “pie”
• Each rim section (pie) weighs 30 tons of steel
• The main pipes of the rim are 864mm in diameter with a wall thickness of 25.4mm (1 inch)
• It took about 11 weeks to assemble the entire rim. The whole Singapore Flyer project passed the 1 million man hours at the end of March 2007
• After all the “pies” were completed, the spokes were removed, leaving only the spindle, cables and rim.
