Fossil fuels are depleting and the world is on a quest to develop alternative, sustainable energy sources. According to the International Energy Agency, bioenergy, in the forms of solid biomass for power generation and liquid transportation fuels, has the potential to supply up to 50% of the world’s energy demand. Many countries and MNCs are now moving ahead to commercialize different forms of bioenergy and biofuels. Singapore has recently commenced its own bioenergy R&D programme. What are the challenges laying ahead? Will we be able to catch up with the big players in the USA and elsewhere? Is our research moving in the right direction, and what are the plans of our local policy makers? Aiming to promote greater integration between bioenergy R&D and commercialization in Singapore, the BioEnergy Society of Singapore (BESS) is holding its inaugural conference to bring together all parties interested in the development of Singapore’s bioenergy capacity. BESS is the most comprehensive, local entity on bioenergy, with researchers, policy makers and industrial representatives all participating to share their knowledge and experience in an open forum. The conference has five sessions as follows: Session 1: Registration and Opening Ceremony Session 2: Bioenergy - Policies and Strategies Session 3: Bioenergy R&D Session 4: Bioenergy Industries Session 5: Bioenergy - Opportunities and Challenges Hear from the research institutional, government and industrial leaders: Dr. Keith Carpenter Director, Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences (ICES), A*STAR, Singapore Dr Sanjay Chittarajan KUTTAN Director, Industry Development, Energy Planning and Development Division, Energy Market Authority Mr. Edwin Khew Chairman of Sustainable Energy Association of Singapore (SEAS); CEO, IUT Global Pte Ltd Mr. Daniel Joo- then Ng Senior Associate Director, Research Strategy, National University of Singapore Assoc/Prof. Jeff Obbard Project Director, Bioenergy.
