From the Superintendent

As I write this, the jack-hammers, backhoes, concrete pumpers and

other noisy machines are whirring away outside my window.Forty eight new teachers have arrived and they are busyacclimating themselves to Singapore and SAS. It all signals the

beginning of another school year.

All school years are special, but this one carries additional significancebecause we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the school, and we are completing a majorbuilding project that started three years ago. There is hardly an area in the entire building thatdidn’t experience a major upgrade or an addition. The campus is looking beautiful and we areso very grateful that our parent community has supported this major building improvementproject.

We are also experiencing a significant enrollment increase. Currently, we have 3280 studentsenrolled for the start of the school year which surpasses the previous record setting enrollmentof 3141 which was set at the close of last school year. The largest class is the 10th grade with282 students.

I’m starting my seventh year as the Superintendent of Schools at SAS and my forty-secondyear in this marvelous profession. Recently, I was asked what I hoped would be my greatestaccomplishment as Superintendent at SAS. I replied, “If I can help create an environment wherefaculty and staff can do in more spectacular ways what they’re here to do, then I’ve contributed.The exciting part is being in a position to create and build in new ways that allow for newpossibilities”.

Possibilities continue to grow out of the rich nurturing and intellectual ferment that exists atSingapore American School. If this Century is about one thing it is about creating andharnessing new possibilities: Creative uses for technology. Creative solutions to problemsthat bedevil our neighborhoods and our world. Creative ways to keep ourselves and ourcommunities healthy. It’s about creative ways to balance individual liberties with the collectivegood.

With your continued support, our faculty will continue to unleash those possibilities for ourstudents. It will be another grand year. Welcome to Singapore American School.

Over the pastthree years we have seen dramaticchanges in the school campus andwe al l should feel proud of thefacilities that are available for ourchildren. But the physical assets ofSAS are only a small portion of thestrength of our community. We lookto you and your family to help usbuild the personal strength that SASprovides to our school and families.

As we all settle in for the new schoolyear, I would like to invite you toattend the PTA Ice Cream Socialduring the Open House onSaturday the 13th of August from10-2 in the Intermediate/MiddleSchool Cafeteria. This event will bea great time to catch up with friendsand to meet new members of ourSAS family. I would also like to invite

all of you to the PTA Welcome BackCoffee, which will be held at 8:30 –11:00 am on Friday the 26 th ofAugust in the Elementary Theater.This will be a great opportunity tofind out more about the plans for thisschool year, and to f ind ways toparticipate in activities around SAS.

You will find additionalparking at the HDB Car Park at Block 426A and mayaccess the school via the Middle School PedestrianGate. School uniforms will be available for purchase from

the Booster Booth in the High School and from the

PTA in the IS/PS gymnasium. Vehicle Permits will be

available in all School Offices. Bussing information

Making the Most ofour Track and

Fields....

Students will return once again thisAugust to a renewed and expandedSAS campus. This summer mostconstruction focused on changeswithin the Primary and IntermediateSchool and Central Administration.However, one impressive project thatwill touch the lives of our students atall grade levels is the new track andstadium field.

To be sure, the athletic fields havebeen a much-loved and frequentlyused part of the campus for years.They are used not only for classes,SAS athletics and special events, butalso by community organizationssuch as SACAC. Especially on thestadium field, this has meantsubstantial wear and tear over thenine years the Woodlands Campushas been our home. Now we have abrand new track surface, and an

entirely new field of natural turf that will serve us well for many years tocome.

This project has been on the drawing board since the Board of Governorsapproved the school expansion project in 2003. Originally planned asartificial turf, after much investigation the decision was made to install realturf. Not only is this a better solution for our school for a number of reasons,it also resulted in a substantial cost savings.

Stop by and take a look next time you up at school. For those of you that arenew to SAS this year and are just finding your way around the school, youwill find the stadium field just behind the high school. For a great view, headto the high school cafeteria and look out the windows facing the back of the

campus.

When you come on campus for the firsttime in August, you will see someexciting changes and additions to theSAS campus that have been madeduring the summer holiday. You can’tmiss the beautiful new entry to theCentral Administration office, and youwill want to explore other areas of theschool to see the changes made overthe summer.

This final phase of construction marksthe completion of a 64 million dollarexpansion and renovation project thatbroke ground in June 2003, adding andrenovating facilities to support aneventual enrollment of 3700 students.This summer, additional classroomswere added to the Primary School, anew elementary gymnasium andPrimary School cafeteria were added,and renovations were made to existingclassroom spaces to allow for additionalmusic and art classrooms in theIntermediate and Primary Schools.

Plan to spend some time exploring thecampus to see the many changes to thefacility while you are at school for OpenHouse. Open House this year is SaturdayAugust 13th from 10am to 2pm.
