Texas A&M senior and WPRA rookie Taylor Jacob bested a field of veterans to capture the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo Championship. Jacob, a 22-year-old senior communications major with a double minor in business and sports management, collected $14,797 of the $84,186 total purse. The historic rodeo, held January 24-February 9 in Will Rogers Coliseum, generously added $30,000 to the purse. The victory also marked the one-year anniversary of Jacob’s part- nership with her 8-year-old buckskin gelding Honor Thy French- man (“Bo”). “I got him exactly a year ago this past weekend,” she explained. “I thought that was kind of cool. I had been looking for a barrel horse for a pretty good while. I went one weekend and tried four or five of them. All of them were great actually, but I liked him the best.” Jacob purchased Bo, a son of Frenchmans Feature out of the Jet Of Honor mare, Honey Ofa Jet, from Angela Mikles, Elk City, Okla. Mikles had pur- chased him from Danny Kingins and veteran futurity trainer and rodeo champion Marne Loosenort. The geld- ing was bred by longtime industry players Ronnie and Martha Shomaker of McKenzie, Tenn. They own French- mans Feature, who was bred by Brian Fulton, owner of leading sire A Streak Of Fling. When Jacob purchased Bo she didn’t know if the gelding would take to rodeos. “It was kind of a gamble I took,” Jacob said. “The weekend I got him I took him to an amateur rodeo, a CPRA (Cowboy Professional Rodeo Association) in Humble, Texas, and I was in a ‘perf.’ They were loading bulls and all kind of stuff, and I hit a barrel to win it. So, I was pretty excited.” Bo did a great job “handling” Fort Worth. He and Jacob clocked a 16.69 on their first run. “I think I ended up 20th or 21th,” recalled Jacob. “I didn’t turn the first barrel as good as I really wanted to. I still did pretty good. After that performance, I was sitting second so I thought I would be okay, but it got faster and faster.” Jacob, who calls Carmine, Texas, home, sandwiched her second- run between the CPRA rodeo in Humble on Thursday night and a college rodeo in Athens, Texas, on Saturday morning. The multiple runs actually benefited Bo as Jacob noted, “He seems to get better with more runs.” Pro Rodeos Continued on Page 3 Givemhell si 81 Honor Thy Frenchman Jet Deck si 100 Honey Ofa Jet Jet Of Honor si 102 2005 Buckskin Gelding Quincy Liz si 95 Moon Deck si 95 Steamie si 95 Miss Big Feature si 93 Sun Frost Frenchmans Feature Frenchmans Guy Frenchman’s Lady Alamitos Feature si 100 Miss Big Bite si 95 Rider/Owner: Taylor Jacob; Breeder: Ronnie & Martha Shomaker 2013 WPRA NFR STANDINGS 1 Jane Melby $28,219 2 Fallon Taylor $20,006 3 Taylor Jacob $16,825 4 Carlee Pierce $15,716 5 Kendra Dickson $14,408 6 Natalie Foutch $14,209 7 Lisa Lockhart $11,199 8 Annesa Self $10,542 9 Brenda Mays $9,359 10 Mary Walker $9,213 11 Sammi Bessert $8,630 12 Sherry Cervi $8,129 13 Sydni Blanchard $7,854 14 Kelley Carrington-French $6,772 15 Brittany Pozzi $6,677 16 Kenna Squires $6,672 17 Kay Blandford $6,575 18 Lee Ann Rust $6,352 19 Sabrina Ketcham $5,900 20 Rainy Graham $5,753 Courtesy of www.wpra.com - Unofficial as of February 11, 2013

iN the NeWS.......In the news......in the news......In the News......In the News.....Dickson Wins $5,000 best Dressed awardby Johna Cravensfor the Fort Worth Stock Show & rodeo Kendra Dickson of Aubrey, Texas, won the $5,000 Jerry Ann Taylor Best Dressed Award at the final championship round at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo on Saturday, February 9. The award was more than first place winnings in any of the three rounds of barrel racing. The Women’s Professional Rodeo Association and the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame presented the award. Jerry Ann Taylor, a 1986 honoree of the hall, was a flamboyant trick rider and roper who was known for her sense of style. “I was more than thrilled,” Dickson said of her win. “It was a really big deal for us.” Dickson uses the word “us” deliberately. Her outfit and matchingbreast collar and belt were designed and put together in less than aday. Hope Schuster, 16, who works at Dickson’s barn, was her assis-tant and Dickson took her into the arena to help accept the award. Her daughter and one of her school friends also helped. Hope, Dickson said, has a good eye for style. “She is so patient. She helped me glue all the rhinestones and made some great designsuggestions.” Dickson and her crew started putting her look for the finals to-gether on Friday evening, even though she wasn’t sure she would be one of the top 12 in the finals. They glued all day Saturday, in case she made the final round. Saturday afternoon, Dickson learned she was eleventh and would be competing Saturday night. “We repurposed an old top that went with an evening gown,’ Dickson said. “We didn’t spend a lot of money, but we made it a fun, family project.” The award was presented for the first time in December at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) to Mary Walker, and is only presented at the NFR and at the Fort Worth rodeo. Pam Minick of Fort Worth, a National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame board member and honoree and former WPRA vice president, said Taylor was as comfortable at the symphony as she was on a horse. The purpose of the award is to encourage women in professional rodeo to carry on the tradition of wearing colorful western attire in the rodeo arena. “Her sense of style was an inspiration,” Minick said. “We owe it to the heritage of the sport to bring this back.” Dickson, who placed fifth in the first round of barrel racing, ran the second fastest time in the final round and finished fifth overall, winning $7,972 in prize money to go along with the $5,000 Jerry Ann Taylor Best Dressed Award. Before the Fort Worth rodeo began, Dickson had decided to tithe ten percent of any winnings to The Shepherd’s Pantry, a local food bank in her hometown. That charity will receive nearly $1,300 from Dickson.

“This award is an incentive for competitors to up their game andrecognize that presentation is important,” Dickson said. “We all need to do our part and promote our sport.” Barrel racing has a long history with the World’s Original IndoorRodeo®. The Fort Worth rodeo began holding an invitational ranch girls barrel race in 1955, not long after barrel racing was created. The Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo is known for its tradition and this new award seems a perfect fit, especially since the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame is located in Fort Worth, next door to the stock show grounds.

An update on a Farms.com YouTube video that went viral in 2011, the ad features a series of stunning images showing scenes from American farms, over a recording of the late nationally-syndicated radio host Paul Harvey reading a speech entitled “So God Made a Farmer.”

I was ner-vous for sure.” Jacob ended up turning in the fastest time of the rodeo to that point, a 16.28. Even with that under her belt, she was even more nervous before her final run. “I was shaking when I put on my rubber bands,” she said. “I was like ‘Come on Taylor. Get it together. It’s just three barrels.’“The first two girls that ran had like a .2 and .3. I thought ‘Whoa, it’s going to get fast.’ It lightened up a little bit and then Lisa Lock-hart ran a .4 ahead of me. I knew I made a pretty good run. The first barrel was my best of all three runs, and I really felt like he ran out and ran between his barrels. I knew it was pretty good, and when I ran out and saw my time, I was really excited.” She had bested her previous fast time with a blistering 16.19. Making the win extra special was that her entire family, her mother, father and both grandparents were there to watch. Jacob grew up competing. Her mother Robyn competed until three children made it too difficult. Her father, Wayne, supported all of their efforts. While her oldest brother Tanner doesn’t compete, her younger brother Tucker, a sophomore at Texas A&M, also col-lege rodeos.

Prior to her victory in Fort Worth, Jacob had more of a reputa-tion as an all-around hand. She was the Texas High School Finals Rodeo All Around Champion in 2009 and has numerous qualifica-tions to the College National Finals Rodeo in breakaway roping and goat tying. Jacob hopes to change that this year. Even though she had to turn out of the short go, Saturday night, her win in the long go at

the Athens’ college rodeo gave her enough points to sit third in the standings with four rodeos remaining. She’d also like to add WPRA Rookie-of-the-Year to her resume. Jacob, who will graduate in May, is enrolled in 12 hours this semes-ter with six of those covered by online classes. “I’m on way home now from San Angelo,” she said early Monday evening. “I’m going to school on Tuesday, and I’m going to Jackson to compete on Wednesday and then Okeechobee and Kissimmee on Friday and Sunday, and then I have to be back in school on Monday.” With her classwork schedule maintainable, Jacob’s biggest con-cern is getting entered in the bigger rodeos. “I honestly don’t know if I’m going to be able to get into Aus-tin,” she explained, “because what I won at Fort Worth doesn’t count as far as qualifications. It’s hard to get into the bigger rodeos as a rookie. If I had bought my card last year I probably would have been alright, but I really wanted to try to win rookie.” After graduation, Jacob plans on working on her Master’s degree in Human Resource Management through an online program at Tarleton State University so she will be able to continue to rodeo.

by Julie Mankin Hayden Segelke might own one of the fastest barrel horses in the world right now, but she craves being home riding colts just a little more than tearing up the highway. That worked great for her little sister, Paxton, last weekend. Paxton borrowed Hayden’s 7-year-old palomino gelding, HPQ Smokin Rascal, for the trip to Gillette, Wyoming’s Winter Western and it paid off in a big way. She won the Mountain States Circuit rodeo with the only sub-16-second run of the weekend to earn $1,396. The next day she entered the Roper Rage Open 4D race in the same arena with the pattern set from the other end. She not only won the race, but her 14.3-second run won it by a staggering seven-tenths of a second for another $1,056. “Rascal loves the Cam-Plex,” said Segelke, who hauled to San An-gelo, Texas, right afterward. “He ran the fast time at the Fizz Bomb in 2011.” The 18-year-old cowgirl is a freshman at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colo., where her sister Hayden, 20, also is going to school. Paxton is a business education major while Hayden is studying history. One more sister rounds out the Segelke trio – 14-year-old Quincy – and they have a little brother, 7-year-old Holden. The first letter of the girls’ first names makes up the prefix to all the Segelke horses’ registered names – HPQ. roper rage Continued on Page 10

For years their mother, Vickie Segelke, has been raising and training outstanding barrel horses out of a granddaughter of The Ole Man named Miss Que Ball that she bred to Fols Smoke (speed index 104). Fols Smoke was a half-thoroughbred son of Fols Native out of a Sugar Bars great-granddaughter. The magic cross produced loads of guts and speed – Segelke hit the big-time at the futurities on one filly in particular, Miss Smokin Annie. “Annie” is 18 now, and the crop of horses the family has gotten out of that mare have been nothing short of spectacular, including Rascal. They run their guts out and are as tough as nails. Rascal broke into the limelight with Hayden when they won a futurity, won the BBR Finals, and in 2012 won the Central Rocky Mountain Region with him being named Barrel Horse of the Year. At the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Rascal placed second in the first round, won the second round and only a penalty in round three kept him from setting the new arena record. Still, he helped Hayden claim the coveted all-around championship (she also tied goats last year), and the duo is winning the Central Rocky Mountain again this year. In November, when Christy Loflin’s mare was hurt, a mutual friend called Segelkes to look into Loflin taking Rascal to the NFR. The girls, who are nothing if not generous, readily said yes.“It was good for him,” said Paxton. “Christy is super nice and she stayed so positive and made it fun. She won $20,000, which is great. It’s so hard, especially at that place, to jump on a new horse.”While most NFR fans watching might have thought Rascal looks

hard to ride, it’s actually the mental aspect of riding him that’s tough. “He is super easy,” said Paxton. “But the really hard part is it takes incredible confidence because he runs so hard. I remember the first time I got on him we were at the IFYR and my horse was tying up, so Hayden had me just jump on him. I literally had my eyes closed all the way to the first barrel.” If you get a chance to watch Rascal – especially the video on Pax-ton’s Facebook page of the run at Gillette whereby she was all alone in the 1D – you get an idea how hard Rascal flies into barrels. At a thousand miles an hour, keeping up with him is a feat all its own. “You have to have a lot of trust in him,” said Paxton. “He does everything and we just run him in a little sweet six bit, and for a long time we ran him in a ring snaffle. He’s super athletic, too – he cut his pocket off at Gillette and I thought, oh jeez, but he just maneuvered around it.” The girls are running five horses out of Annie right now, includ-ing Rascal, whose sire was Una Frio Cerveza. Unfortunately, the 11-year-old Dash Ta Fame son out of a Sugar Bars great-grand-daughter died on the Segelkes last year, but he threw four stud colts before his demise. “Hayden broke and trained Rascal and did everything,” said Paxton, whose main horse is a one-eyed full sister to Rascal named HPQ Miss Smokin Quie. The girls and their mom are also running a promising half-brother to Rascal by the same stud. Few sisters so

openly share their good horses, but Vickie Segelke gave her daugh-ters an incentive back when they were little. “We share a checkbook,” said Paxton. “Mom set us up a joint bank account when we started junior rodeoing, and it was her way of making us cheer each other on. We still share everything – clothes, horses, food. Nothing is mine or yours; it’s ours. Vickie virtually gave up barrel racing in those days to haul the girls, but they’ve lately talked her into getting back in the saddle. Her husband, two-time NFR steer wrestler Tim Segelke, does all the entering for his girls. And his own parents, who winter in Texas, hardly miss a rodeo where their granddaughters are entered. “We have our own traveling cheer squad,” said Paxton who, like Hayden, has been rodeoing since she was 5. The sisters are plenty busy with college and 40 head of horses to ride at the house (just 30 minutes from campus), but look for plenty more accolades from Rascal, no matter who’s in the saddle.

San antonio bracket System: There are five total brackets, so 20 barrel racers will advance to the Semi-Finals. There are four semi-finals performances. Each con-testant will compete in either semi-finals 1 & 2 or 3 & 4. They start at zero in the semi-finals and advance to the finals based on money won in the semi-finals. The top five from each of the semi-finals qualify for the finals where they will again start at zero with the fast time winning $12,445. The finals pays four places. Semi-finals pay the same as the rounds.

by Julie Mankin You may think Mary Burger has been quiet in the years since she won the 2006 WPRA world championship on Ron Martin’s sorrel superstar Rare Fred. But no longer. Two years ago, she picked out a 2-year-old futurity prospect, and the rest… well, she’s making his-tory. Burger, 64, rode her 4-year-old buckskin gelding Sadiefamous-lastwords to the only sub-15-second run of the Cowboy Publishing Timed Event Challenge, held in conjunction with the Fort Worth Stock Show on Feb. 5. The run of 14.94 earned her $3,784, and that’s on top of a fantastic January at the futurities in Arizona. She nicknamed the buckskin colt “Momo,” which is appropriately short for “More Money.” That’s a surprisingly aggressive move for this reserved grandmother from Pauls Valley, Okla., but then again, winning is her forte. “On paper, I knew Sadies Frosty Drift was one of the winningest sons of Frenchman’s Guy in the barrel and roping pen, so I figured I’d be all right buying this stud colt,” she said. “It’s been two years in January that I’ve been fooling with him.” Just because Burger spent the better part of a decade rodeoing on Fred doesn’t mean she wasn’t one of the fiercest colt-trainers in barrel racing history. She’s had nine AQHA world champions, for starters, and has seen huge success at futurities going way back. It was time to get back to her roots when she was scouting a new

mount. “I’ve had a lot of different colored horses, but never had a really nice buckskin, so I decided he was the one,” she said. Momo is by Jeff and Kristie Thorstenson’s former stallion Sadie’s Frosty Drift. Now with Brazilian owners, the stud is by Frenchman’s Guy out of a granddaughter of Orphan Drift with Two Eyed Jack on the bottom. And the colt is out of a Dash Ta Fame mare named Porky And Bess. On the bottom side, Porky And Bess is out of Tic Tac Oh – by a son of Beduino crossed on a daughter of Hempen that was Three Ohs on the bottom. Burger thought of holding the colt back from competition until his 5-year-old year, but he’s the only horse she and her husband, Kerry, have going currently, and she knew he was clocking well. “He’s got a style a little like Fred in that he runs with his head down and his nose out,” she said. “He doesn’t run up there and set hard, but he has a little more roll-back than Fred did.” At 64 years young, Burger is taking it as it comes. She’s headed to Kinder, La., this weekend for Lance Graves’ futurity and because she won RodeoHouston in 2009, she’s invited to compete there this year. Plus, she has plans to take Momo to the Diamonds and Dirt Futurity in Bryan, Texas. In the meantime, she ran Momo in the Junior Barrels at Fort Worth to get him qualified for the World Show, where she’s likely to make her roster of world champions hit the magic number 10. The Timed Event Challenge actually takes the top 65 times from the Senior, Junior and Amateur divisions (more than 300 horses), so Momo whooped up on all the senior horses with his plucky senior

jockey to earn nearly $4,000. Burger hasn’t decided yet if she’ll run Momo at RodeoHouston or an older, outside horse, but if she thinks he can handle it, Katy, bar the door. Texas will be paying out a whole lot more money to this veteran who won her first AQHA world championship in 1974.

Headin’ For Home by Mike Morrison Triple M (Mike Morrison Ministries)

“Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth!” We’ve all heard that advice many times and it’s mostly true. We don’t always get what we want but, if

we’ve committed our lives to Jesus, we can be assured that God has a good plan for us and things will work out well for us. “With God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26) Paul said in Philippians 4:11-12 that he had learned to be content no matter what. That’s a good thing. In 1 Thessalonians 5:18 we’re told to give thanks in everything because this is the will of God for us in Christ Jesus. I know of a young man who came from a very dysfunctional family who had to overcome many disadvantages to succeed in life. He frequently said, “Happiness is a state of mind.” He had learned to be content in all things and eventually he had a good and worth-while life. At first, that “gift horse” might look useless to you but, if you’ve

made Jesus the Lord of your life, there’s a reason for it. Romans 8:28 says all things work for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. Just “Trust in God with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5, 6) That gift horse (circumstance) that didn’t look very promising just might be a small thing that God gave you to see if He could entrust you with a much larger favor!
