Kellie Collier & Streakin Easy april Dominate in DenverBy Tanya randall Kellie Collier and Streakin Easy April (“Lolo”) are picking up right where they left off their 2016 season—victorious. After winning the WPRA World Finals Slot race last October, Collier turned out the 9-year-old mare to recoup for a run for the 2017 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. She responded at their first rodeos back in competition, winning both the special event rodeo Colorado versus the World and the prestigious PRCA rodeo at the National Western Stock Show in Denver. “It’s been very overwhelming with all the calls and texts of sup-port I’ve been getting,” said Collier, a 20-year-old from Hereford, Texas. “I’m still in the clouds.” Although the $8,000 Colorado Versus the World Championship doesn’t count toward any standings, the $11,693 National Western Championship bumps Collier to third in the WPRA World Stand-ings with $15,029 in earnings. Ironically, Denver is the only rodeo that Collier has competed in for 2017. After a fifth-place finish in the WPRA Cardholder’s Race at the World Finals gave her a little boost going into the 2017 Standings, Collier stayed off Lolo until it was time to leg her up for the Janu-ary rodeos. “I decided that she needed a bit of a break,” said Collier, who hadn’t even run Lolo at a jackpot before going to Denver for Colorado Versus the World. “She had a long summer last year, so I decided to give her a couple of months off and start strong at the beginning of the year.” Collier had originally planned to run Lolo at the Sandhills Stock Show & Rodeo in Odessa, Texas, but decided to turn out because of her draw position on the deep, heavy footing. “It’s not that the ground was dangerous or anything, but I was 11th out,” she explained. “I had just taken my mare with me and if I had taken my back up horse, I would have ran him. I just didn’t think it was worth me running her with no decent chance to place.”The pair ended up making their 2017 competitive debut at Colo-rado Versus the World, where she made three runs to win the championship. “I’ve actually never been to Denver before until Colorado Versus the World this year,” said Collier. “It was pretty exciting because I’d never been there. She seemed to like that pen.” Collier and Lolo ran at the later, middle stretch of the 11-day rodeo, held Jan. 12-22, having heard that ground gets faster as the event progresses. They made their first run of 15.49, which tied for tenth in the first go, on the Wednesday, January 18. “In the second round, I knew I just had to be clean. That she would be fast enough. I just tried to make my run again, not do

anything fancy, just stay solid,” said Collier. She and Lolo won the second round with a 15.23 and had the two-run average lead going into the short round on Sunday. “I was way more nervous than I normally am,” she Collier. “For me to experience such a big rodeo and be leading the average going into the short go and a lot of people expecting me to do really well made it a little tougher for me. But again, I just had to go out there and be clean and not hit a barrel. I actually almost hit the third barrel and I actually tried to kick it up as I was going by—which worked—and she ended up running the fastest time of the whole rodeo in the short go. It ended up being a really good fun rodeo for me.” Their victorious 15.20 gave them the winning average, worth $5,334. Collier was quick to give all the credit to her equine partner, Lolo. “She’s incredible,” she said. She deserves all the credit.” Bred by Fulton Ranch, Lolo is by leading sire A Streak Of Fling out of Easy April Lena, by Doc O Dynamite. Easy April Lena is a full sister to Rachael Myllymaki’s NFR qualifier and Calgary Cham-pion Easy Does It Doc. Lolo was purchased as a $25,000 2-year-old by John Villarreal at the 2010 Fulton Performance Horse and Prospect Sale. Carlee

WPra Prorodeo Hall of Fame Barrel racing nomination Form now availableCourtesy of www.WPra.com The announcement made at the 2016 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo that the WPRA in partnership with the PRCA and the ProRodeo Hall of Fame will start inducting barrel racers into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame this summer marks a significant milestone in the association’s history. The WPRA barrel race is a very important element in every ro-deo’s success. It is fast, exciting and provides a huge “wow” factor that fans love. So it makes sense that the WPRA barrel racers be recognized in the ProRodeo Hall of Fame and have a permanent place to honor those that have left their mark on the sport. It is important to recognize that this historical event could not have happened without the vision and dedication of so many. The current and past Board of Directors had always hoped to find the right way to recognize those champions who contributed in a most significant way. Their efforts combined with a continually grow-ing partnership with the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) led to this unique opportunity. Now we need your help. On August 5, 2017, the 2017 Inaugural Induction provides the WPRA with its first opportunity to honor the greats in the WPRA’s barrel racing history. Therefore, your par-ticipation with nominating possible inductees is really important. To make it easy for you a link to the Barrel Racer Honoree Nomination

Form is provided below or can be found on the homepage of www.wpra.com. The nomination form is straight forward and there is a list of frequently asked questions on the back of it. All nominations must be mailed in and received by the WPRA of-fice no later than February 24, 2017. All submitted nominations will be provided to the WPRA 2017 ProRodeo Hall of Fame Selection Committee. This committee was created by the WPRA and is exter-nal from the Board of Directors. The members of this committee were selected based on their combined knowledge of the WPRA, our history, barrel racing, media and the role and the mission of a Hall of Fame. Please take some time to consider the importance of this inaugu-ral event and submit a nomination. There are two items to remem-ber when making a nomination. First, you may submit more than 1 nomination and second it is really important to provide details regarding the nominee’s contribution and their significance to the sport of barrel racing. By jill Moody The 2017 WPRA rodeo season is officially “full steam ahead”. Eager young rookies and experienced veterans alike will be excitedly navigating their way through the next three months of the lucrative “building” rodeos; prestigious venues such as the National Western Stock Show, Ft Worth Stock Show, San Antonio Stock Show, Rodeo Austin, and Rodeo Houston. The contestants on the reality TV show “The Amazing Race” would be hard pressed to keep up with the gals on the NFR trail. Although it sounds like a glamorous lifestyle to perform and compete in front of sold out crowds, to earn huge checks and win championship buckles, “living the dream” can turn into a night-mare in the blink of an eye. Blown fuses, leaking water tanks, and dead batteries are minor; throw in flooded living quarters, burning generators, and exploding tires and desperation and anguish can be hard to overcome. Realistically it takes a village to keep a person going down the rodeo road. The emotional support from family and friends, finan-cial help from sponsors, and elbow grease from the good ole boy in Timbuktu; no amount of generosity, charity, or kindness should be taken for granted. At the end of the day one name will be in lights and when said

name hits the arena floor it’s “all about you” baby. That 17 second run can make or break a person’s spirit, cement or implode a family, buy the bar or be sold to the bank. Songwriters have amassed fortunes writing about “the lonely road” and “life in the fast lane” and barrel racers have lived the lyr-ics to more than one Whitesnake song and Eagles album. Whether you step to the beat of Garth Brooks and “The Dance” or prefer to “Party Like a Rockstar” with Shop Boyz, make your dream your own and then own that dream. Just try to keep in mind that it really isn’t “all about you”. Everyone has a dream and every dream takes a village. “Pay it forward”. Even if all you have to offer is a word of encouragement to be involved in someone else’s vi-sion, you will be just as much or more of a champion as the person sporting the gold buckle.

Jill Moody is a 2-time Reserve World Champion, & a 2-time NFR Avear-age Champion. She and her great mare Dolly won the Average at the 2010 NFR making 10 runs in 138.26 earning over $133,000. Jill is a multiple futurity champion, Badlands Circuit Champion and owns multiple amateur association finals championships in the Dakotas. Jill is also a 2-time Female Athlete of the Year by the South Dakota Sports Writers As-sociation.

Pierce purchased the mare and seasoned her to rodeo competi-tion as a backup horse before standing out at the 2014 WNFR as a 6-year-old. Collier purchased Lolo from Pierce in the late spring of 2015. Collier, a two-time College National Finals Rodeo qualifier, fin-ished 23rd in the 2016 standings, which gets her into all the limited entry rodeos, namely San Antonio and Houston. She’ll finish out the month of January with Fort Worth, Texas, on Saturday, slack at San Angelo, Texas, on Sunday and Rapid City, S.D., on Tuesday, January 31. She’ll run her back up VF Mr Ed at Rapid. She wanted to give special thanks to her friend Paxton Segelke, saying “She’s helped more than I could ever ask for. By Hope Sickler It seems like just yesterday the hype was building for the WNFR and now a new season is underway. A whole new group of cowboys and cowgirls, along with last years qualifiers, are setting their sights on the lights of Vegas when the season comes to an end. With the recent conclusion of two large winter rodeos, the San-dhill’s Stock Show and Rodeo in Odessa, Texas and the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver, Colorado, barrel racers are looking forward to the big money payouts at the remaining winter rodeos, along with the start of the spring/summer rodeo run. Texas cowgirls took top honors at both rodeos with WPRA Rookie Holly Wright winning Odessa and Kellie Collier winning

Denver. Both girls are hoping for their first WNFR berth this com-ing December. The historic Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo kicked off last week and will run through the beginning of February while the Rapid City Stock Show and Rodeo will start this weekend, along with barrel racing slack in San Angelo. Along with Rapid City and San Angelo beginning this weekend, Glen Rose, Texas is hosting the 13th & final American Qualifier in conjunction with WinMore Productions Dinosaur Classic. The Semi-Finals for The American, hosted at the Fort Worth Stockyards, are quickly approaching with only one qualifier left for

barrel racers to get qualified, the quali-fier in Glen Rose (this Sat, Jan 28). The Semi-Finals run from February 14th through the 17th. and more than 600 qualifiers in all events will attempt to make it through the Semi-Finals to earn a berth in the Finals of The American at AT&T Stadium, Sunday, February 19th. The barrel racing this year is expected to pay out more than $300,000 at the Semi-Finals. The San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo is the next big winter rodeo and is February 9th-25th. San Antonio is a lim-ited rodeo and is limited to only 50 entries in the barrel racing. The qualifications consist of 5 barrel racers from the 2017 Pro Rodeo World Standings based on winnings seven days prior to entries clos-ing, 43 barrel racers from the 2016 Pro Rodeo World Standings and 2 barrel racers from the 2016 WPRA Tour Standings. After San Antonio, is Rodeo Austin March 11th-25th. The qualifi-

cations are almost as stiff as San Antonio, limiting the barrel racing to a minimum of 96 entries. Nine barrel racers will be chosen from the 2017 Pro Rodeo World Standings based on seven days prior to entries closing, 36 barrel racers from 2016 Pro Rodeo World Standings, 15 barrel racers from 2017 WPRA/PRCA Texas Circuit Standings based on winnings seven days prior to entries closing, 30 barrel racers from the 2016 WPRA/PRCA Texas Circuit Standings and 6 from the WPRA 2016 Tour Standings. As of this Monday, Tiany Schuster from Krum, Texas is lead-ing the WPRA World Standings with $29,754.12. Jordan Moore from Mauston, Wisconsin placed in the first round at Denver last week and is currently sitting second in the World with $16,928.70. National Western Stock Show and Rodeo Champion Barrel Racer Kellie Collier is third with $15,028.69, while 2016 WNFR qualifier Stevi Hillman is in fourth place with $14,974.10. Mom-to-be, Brit-tany Pozzi-Tonozzi wraps up the top 5 with $13,930.03.

For the fourth year in a row Mary Walker of Ennis, Texas, and her horse Latte earned the $10,000 champion’s paycheck in bar-rel racing. Walker, the 2012 Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) World Champion, and Latte (registered name Perculatin) love competing in Will Rogers Coliseum. “It’s hometown for us – we’re 45 minutes away,” she said, adding that Latte gets to stay in his home stall most of the day. “It’s amaz-ing, I feel lucky in Fort Worth.” “On the way over here I thought, there’s no way it could hap-pen again,” Walker said. “But, that’s what I said last year. Dakota (Eldridge who won the $10,000 in steer wrestling) and I are headed to Denver tomorrow morning. I told him at least we’ll have lunch money.” The tournament-style event requires two runs – one in the quali-fying round to be among the top four and move on to the cham-pionship round and another run less than 30 minutes later for the $10,000 championship. That makes Walker’s four-year streak even more remarkable. Walker had the fastest time in the qualifying round – a 17.064 which let her run first and have the best ground conditions in the finals. Her time in the finals was 17.077, 13 one-hundredths of a second faster than her first run. Walker was part of the team repre-senting the Rodeo Houston. Thursday’s event featured champions from each of eight legend-ary rodeos, including Cheyenne Frontier Days, the Calgary Stam-pede, Rodeo Houston, the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, the San Angelo Stock Show & Rodeo, Rodeo Austin, the National

Western Stock Show & Rodeo in Denver, Colo., and the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo®. The champions competed in bareback bronc riding, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, barrel racing and bull riding in a tournament format with each rodeo’s team wearing the same colored shirt for easy identification. First, eight contestants competed in each event, with the top four qualifying for a second round where the winner received a briefcase with $10,000 cash inside. Many of the contestants were current or former world champions and National Finals Rodeo qualifiers and the livestock was among the elite in pro rodeo. For the third year in a row, Rodeo Houston won the team cham-pionship. This year’s win was on the strength of two event winners – Walker and Eldridge. Eldridge’s time of 5.19 seconds in the first round slipped him into the shootout round in fourth place. He was the first steer wres-tler to compete and stopped the clock in 3.76 seconds. Newly crowned world champion bareback rider Tim O’Connell, riding for Fort Worth, got the crowd off to a rollicking start when he scored 89.5 points on Korkow Pro Rodeo’s Onion Ring to win the bareback riding for the home team. Former saddle bronc riding world champion Jacobs Crawley earned an event title for Cheyenne with an 88-point effort on Stace Smith Pro Rodeo’s Resistol’s Top Hat. He edged his younger brother Sterling, who rode for the San Angelo team, by a single point. Oregon cowboy Cody Campbell, riding for Denver, was the only bull rider to stay on for the full eight seconds. He scored 91 points on Andrews Rodeo’s Hard Knox. The winning team from Rodeo Houston each received an ad-ditional $1,000 and even those cowboys and cowgirls who did not make the championship round received $500 each. The World’s Original Indoor Rodeo begins its 29-performance run at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Will Rogers Coliseum.

At the beginning of this year, I believe God put it on my heart to pray for people at the Barn who wanted to lose weight in 2017. You know, one of those new years’ resolu-

tions. I was willing to do it, but honestly, the only scripture I could think of was Gal. 5:22-23. It says “but the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance (self-control); against such there is no law.” Now if any of you have ever taken on a prayer project, you know the way to victory is to pray the answer, not the problem. Before I even started I was thinking this daily prayer was going to get monoto-nous QUICK! And when left to my own devices, I could see me just praying God would shut their mouths like He did for Daniel in the lions’ den……. But God! On the first morning I started with the scripture I knew, if ap-plied, would change us from the inside out. If we aren’t just eating everything that flies by our faces (self-control), surely the weight

would begin to diminish. Day 2 I opened my mouth to pray that same scripture and God gave me a different one! Sweeeet! Day 3 till now He has put on my heart different scriptures to stand on! It has been such a revelation to me. God is sooo good. And He sees so much more than we do and there are so many ways to reach victory when God is leading the way. If you have some-thing on your heart to pray for, just trust Him. He’ll come through for you and it won’t be boring!
