Cut Out Your Lawn for Cash

by Al Sattler

Drought continues. California's water reservoirs are running dry. Stephen Murray, a member of the Sierra Club Angeles Chapter Water Committee, recently calculated the per capita residential water consumption for cities in Los Angeles County for July, based on publicly available information.

Part of his data appears in a table on page 3, showing use in cities within the Palos Verdes-South Bay Regional Group, and a few other cities for comparison. The data indicates that those cities with large lots and high incomes tend to use the most water. The Palos Verdes Peninsula is a very large water consumer.

Keeping all those big green lawns green takes a lot of water! The lawn around the California State Capitol is not being watered (except around historic trees), so perhaps it's time to follow the Capitol's lead. Rip out that old lawn and plant drought resistant plants!

Rebates of $2 to $3 per square foot of lawn removed are available through West Basin Municipal Water District.

The pesticide DDT was manufactured from 1947 until 1982 at a plant owned by Montrose Chemical at 20201 Normandie Ave, near Torrance. Chlorobenzene, a solvent, was used in the Montrose operations. Comment from trip leader: Badger Pass is a fantastic place for cross country skiing and snowshoeing. Last year the trip was full despite the fact there was no snow and we ended up hiking. This year I moved the trip from Martin Luther King Weekend to President's Day weekend. Even last year there was snow at Badger on President's Day. If the El Nino develops as some have predicted, then we might have exceptional snow conditions. I have seen over 6 feet of snow at Badger over President's Weekend during El Nino years. If this is the case, then I expect that the cabin we have reserved will be filled early (so sign up early if you want a spot!) If we have a sufficient number of people on the wait list, we can rent another cabin. But that is only if we have sufficient time. So sign up early and tell your friends to sign up early. And we shall all do a snow dance!

Hugh Pendleton In Memoriam

We received word recently that longtime Sierra Club leader Hugh Pendleton passed away.

Hugh had been active with the Palos Verdes-South Bay Regional Group for decades. He was the Moonlight Hike Coordinator for about 40 years, receiving an award recently from the Angeles Chapter for his leadership role. The Moonlight Hikes have always been a wonderful social occasion. In the 1980s, several marriages resulted from couples meeting on the Moonlight Hikes. Many of us remember potluck parties Hugh hosted, including Prairie Home Companion Parties, where we would socialize while listening to the radio.

Hugh was an avid skier, and a member of National Ski Patrol for over 50 years, still participating in his 80s. Sherry Silver remembers when she and Hugh were on the same bus going to a Sierra Singles Ski trip to Mammoth in the 1970s. He talked enthusiastically about the Sierra Club, convincing her to become a Sierra Club Leader.

We'll miss you, Hugh. It seemed like you would keep going forever.

There will be a memorial service for Hugh Pendleton in early November at the Neighborhood Church in Palos Verdes Estates, where he was a longtime member. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ (DDT, from p.1)

area with the most concentrated DNAPL. A treatment facility would be built on the Montrose chemical site. The treatment process would volatilize most of the Chlorobenzene, capturing it aboveground, but leaving the DDT underground.

Markus Niebanck, the Technical Advisor for the project (an independent advisor required under Superfund Law) cautions that, in order to protect surrounding groundwater from contamination, the extraction and treatment process will have to continue for about 3000 years.

The EPA is currently taking public comment on methods to address this contamination. The deadline for comments is November 21. A public comment meeting will be held Saturday, November 8, 10 AM-12:30 PM at the Holiday Inn, 19800 Vermont Ave in Torrance.

Fall is the time to plant native plants. Better than planting exotic drought resistant plants from Australia or Africa, planting local natives will support local wildlife--beautiful birds and insects that depend on our local native plants to survive.
