2 T Bogus Basin Ski Club • A club for all seasons

From the PresidentWith the warmer weather/rain and my now very demanding job, I haven’t made it up to Bogus much lately. I skied at Brundage for four days between Christmas and New Years. I hope any hold-outs for the Tahoe Ski Trip have now signed up. It will be over by the time this Mogul comes out. I could really use some help understanding why it is so difficult for our club to fill even one trip per year. We are a ski club for Heaven’s sake! I am sure that many people had trouble affording the $525 when times are tough even though it is a real bargain for what you are getting. My biggest problem was getting the whole week off work when I am so busy and have taken quite a bit of time the past few months. I am going to need to plan better next year. At the Annual Meeting, tentatively scheduled for March 13, we will be discussing next year’s trips. Please come prepared to make suggestions and give your board feedback. We want to plan trips that a larger number of members will want to and be able to participate in.

Although we did not have a huge number of members at the Steelheads hockey game on January 14, those of us who attended had a great time. It was a very fun and laid back evening. Thank you Michael Bouton for your efforts getting this going. And Janice Walker won the ride on the Zamboni! One new member, Bob Kirkpatrick, joined us. We want to encourage more new members to come out. Be sure to look at our Calendar of Events included in this Mogul. Hope to see you soon!

goes to the Scholar Dollars program and four students get rental gear, a lesson, a lift ticket and transportation that otherwise would not. What a way to compound the effect of your donation! Your after tax cost will range from $33 to $43 depending on your tax bracket.

You can send a check (made payable to Bogus Basin) to Tyler Wymond, 2715 Crescent Rim Drive, Boise, ID 83706. We will present these funds to Mike Shirley of Bogus Basin at the annual meeting in March.

The Bogus Basin Ski Club supports a program to introduce kids to snowboarding and skiing.

The Scholar Dollars program has been in effect for many years and it organizes school classes from grades 3 through 12 for a night of skiing or snow boarding. Last year 3,870 students participated. Bogus Basin subsidizes the costs so that it is affordable and no youngster is turned away regardless of ability to pay. There isn’t a better program or way to introduce young people to the sport. The funds contributed by the ski club and its members will help fund this program. Last year the club members contributed $2,000 and the club matched it so at the annual meeting $4,000 which was enough for 160 kids to go.

The club’s goal is to get a contribution from at least 100 members of at least $25. For a tax deductible contribution of $25, $50 or $100, you can share the passion you have for the sport with a youngster. A $50 contribution means $100

Come join us February 5 from 12 to 2pm for a barbecue off the Silver Queen parking lot along the trail. The area will be blocked off in support of the Dotty Clark youth racing up on the hill. The Dotty Clark Memorial race was created after the death of Dotty Clark. She had been a junior racer at Bogus, graduated from high school and was attending Stanford. She lost her life in a tragic automobile accident. Jack Numbers, the former director of the ski school, and her family created the Dotty Clark Memorial race in her memory. The fund helps put kids up on the mountain.

THE CRAB CRACK NEEDS VOLUNTEERS. The prize for volunteering during 2010-2011 is $150 in Bogus Basin Bucks. Being a volunteer is fun and rewarding. You will meet new people and increase your interest in club events. Each time a club member volunteers to work on an event, their name is submitted by that event chairperson to the annual lottery pool. The winner’s name will be drawn at the annual General Membership meeting in March 2011. E-mail Fred Uranga at [email protected] OR contract the Social Director, Natalie Angell, at [email protected]. Good luck!

After selling raffle tickets for over 5 months, we finally had the drawing for the Bogus Basin Season Pass and Sun Valley trip raffles.

Originally, we were giving away two “seats” with the ski club to Sun Valley, January 7-9. However, Sun Valley lowered the price of their individual packages to the point that they were lower than what we were offered as a group. So the Board decided to have the raffle be a $575 gift card to Sun Valley.

We had the drawing at the Christmas Party on December 18. Interestingly enough, both winners bought their raffle tickets at the Boise Rec Fest in June.

Larry Sirahll bought tickets for his triplet daughters and Riley’s ticket was drawn for the Bogus Basin Season’s pass. Riley is ten years old and just starting to snowboard.

Tera Chase, a single mom of two, recently moved to Boise from Yakima, Washington. She is a teacher at Capital High School. She won the $575 gift card to Sun Valley.

Congratulations to both winners. Enjoy!

Bob and Bessie Skinner have been long time members of the ski club and have accomplished much throughout the years at Bogus Basin. They were honored at the Bridge Builders Dinner this last November with a “Life Membership award.” Both have been recipients of the Club’s “Old Boot” award and have served on the board of directors.

Bob was very involved with both the Masters and Mighty Might racing programs. He served as chairman of the Jim Brandon Memorial race in 1992 and the Bogus Basin Masters program in 1994. In turn those racers/members participated in the USSA Masters Championship at Sun Valley and did very well in the competition.

Bessie was the Mogul editor for several years, 1990-1994. The news letter was hand typed, assembled and sent out to all members of the club. She also served as membership director for the club.

When the club hosted events, Bessie would make up all the name tags with her talented calligraphy writing and grace the tables with her beautiful cut flowers from her garden. The center pieces were then raffled off to lucky winners.

Bob and Bessie were always there to help make the club successful with whatever was taking place. They made the club work for everyone. Thank you very much for years of service.

Great News For over four months we have followed Ed Cardoza’s recovery from diphtheria and the resulting complications. Ed was released from the St. Alphonsus hospital once before and had to be re-admitted for falling blood pressure. On December 2, 2010 we found out that Ed had been admitted to St. Luke’s Boise. Ed is diagnosed as having Guillain-Barre Syndrome. This is a serious disorder of the nervous system that can occur either spontaneously, often in a healthy individual, or after certain infections. With Ed, it is causing weakness/feelings in his legs and the lower arms/fingers. Ed was transferred to the Elks Rehabilitation Hospital. On December 30 I visited with Ed at the Elks. He looked great and said he was being released from the hospital the following day. He has spent 88 days in the various hospitals. Joyce Peterson brought him home and will provide transportation as he continues his out patient rehabilitation. I spoke to Ed’s good friend, Fred Bernier, on January 21. He had recently visited Ed at his home and brought a Subway lunch with him. A good time was had by all. Ed apparently isn’t able to operate a computer key board yet, however you can contact him by phone. Call Ed at 323-0230.

Immunization shots for diphtheria and tetanus are available at your local pharmacy.

More Great NewsTim Flood e-mailed me recently. His kidney failure was caused by a prostate blockage of the urinary channel. He states, “PSA test may indicate the presence of cancer but does not reveal prostate blockage. When you can’t urinate normally, please get it checked out or you will end up like I did, very close to the end of the road with a long recovery.”

Tim Flood, as you will recall, in July 2010, suffered kidney failure and was treated at the local VA hospital. Tim had follow-up rehabilitation and was released to his daughter around August 23. Tim had follow-up tests in mid-November and has fully recovered. He is looking forward to coming down for some spring skiing and his annual fishing trip to Mountain View Reservoir on the Indian reservation. His current address is 1515 W. Yeisley Road, Othello, WA. 99344. His e-mail address is [email protected].

Mike Larson is now recuperating at home after suffering a stroke on March 2, 2010 and suffering mini strokes while in the hospital. His speech is good; movement of his limbs are limited, but improving. He is using a cane. His memory is fuzzy but improving. Mike is being care for by his brother Brad and his wife Avis. They live down the street from Sue and me.

If you are a compulsive weather watcher this time of year and experience a case of the shakes between snow storms, you just might be a powder junkie. If you are willing to jump out of your nice, warm bed well before light, dress for the cold and jump in your rig to join the parade of your fellow powder pigs headed to the ski hill, you just might be a powder junkie. And yes, if you have ever waited anxiously for the ski patrol to drop the ropes opening the cat tracks to the Superior chairlift on a fresh snow day only to be lured off the trail before you even make it to War Eagle, you are definitely a powder junkie!

Just what is it about powder skiing that makes it so addictive? Where to start!

It’s the thrill of the hunt for the perfect turn, the perfect line, and the lightest snow. You begin to find your secret stashes or know who to follow that can lead you to their secret stashes. And yes, time is of the essence because first tracks are the reward for your early efforts.

It’s the spirit of the adventure, heading off the well groomed trails into the great unknown of the “sidecountry” where stumps can loom dangerously under a jaunty cap of snow or low hanging branches wait to smack you atop your helmet if you don’t accomplish that gymnastics move you had planned. Once you’ve committed to jumping off trail, there may be no easy way back to the hero turns on corduroy. You are obligated to venture out where the snow may be inconsistent and vary from turn to turn. The snow may look better than

it skis but you have made the choice and you are in it for the short term at the minimum. You have to rely on your skiing skills enough to know that you can make it down any slope and any condition. It may not be pretty, but you have the skills to make it back to the manicured runs in good shape.

It’s the sensation of floating and gliding as you maneuver your skis down the slope with perfect rhythm and timing.

Take a break at the bottom and look back up at the artwork you have created on a canvas of white. Notice the symmetry of the turns occasionally dotted by a pole plant. Next run will turn those S’s into 8’s!

It’s the sheer beauty of it! The surroundings are beautiful. The snow is beautiful. And if you are lucky, you will be sharing this experience with your ski buddies.

So, if you own a pair of skis that only come out to play on those powder days, you know exactly where your powder leashes are at any given time, and you are the one followed by fledgling powder pigs, you are a powder junkie! Welcome to the club!

Are You a Powder Junkie?by Greenwood’s Ski Haus
