Simulation Theory / Training
Technology Presentation, HU - LTMS 510
Date: March 16, 2010By: Jan Minnich
Please be understanding of the length of this presentation…. this is tonight’s class topic
(class week #9)
Simulation - Definition
Simulation - is the imitation of some real thing, state of affairs, or process. The act of simulating something generally entails representing certain key characteristics or behaviors of a selected physical or abstract system.
Background knowledge
Me… Not much to draw from(….or…. )
You?
Goals and Objectives …for today
Provide fundamental background of “simulation” theory and benefits pertaining to training and learning systems
Provide meaningful examples for my peers and colleaguesto impress the value of simulation
systemsgenerate and expose you to some ideas
so you can take along
Principles behind simulation training
Simulations allow learners to make effective connections to real life situations
Simulation is essentially “knowledge visualization,” which is a powerful learning mechanism through the use of visible representations to transfer knowledge between two or more people
Principles (con’t)
Benefits:Learners can make mistakes and more
efficiently/effectively learn from immediate feedback
Tremendously beneficial for those jobs/tasks/performances are critical to human health and/or situations / environments which utilize expensive equipment:
Medical industryMilitary fields (Meggitt systems)
Classifications of Simulation
Fundamentally a few basic recognized types: Physical Simulation – real objects are substituted
for the real situation
Interactive Simulation – where a human participant is placed into a model environment, and is exposed to substituted decision/action stimuli
Computer Simulation – broad application often used to enhance Interactive Simulation (above)
Early simulation with: “The Teacher”
Early electronic simulation
In 1958 a computer game called “Tennis for Two” was created by Willy Higginbotham. This was one of the first electronic video games to use a graphical display.

Health Field
Health field - The first medical simulators were simple models of human patients. (mannequins)NursingSurgical proceduresDental procedures
How many of you are CPR trained?
Private Sector Business
Market simulation models are used all the time
Communications (any realm) go to meeting

Sciences
Traditionally Science teachers were trying to simulate the
real environment, through: 2 D Examples Models are 3D versions of real environment Experiments Planetarium - is a classic simulation example
With Simulation integration: Algodoo example

Engaging, thought provoking, allows for group collaboration
Mathematics
Traditional Sim learning – textbooks, theory, problem solving, modeling through board examples, etc
With Simulation integration: How quickly could we have learned
calculus?!?!

English / Literature
Traditionally As long as there has been literature we try to
take our students back to that setting….
With Simulation integration:

Possibilities?
Second Life - is an entirely full presentation in itself…
Musical Simulation
Traditionally: Music teachers model the playing of their
instruments Teach by demonstrating themselves
With Simulation Integration: media clips\The YouTube Electric Guitar Play

Technology Education
Traditional – just consider your own experiences…
With Simulation Integration: Through tech advances we have accelerated the advantages and benefits of Simulation training

Sim’s Limitless Application…
Almost endless ideas for where simulation theory can be applied
Future of Simulation Applications? My opinion: those youth who pursue this field
will be positioned and poised for vast opportunities
