Well Control CAT

The Check-6 Well Control Competency Assurance Trainer(Well Control CAT) is the only system in the world thatprovides virtual instruction, distributed simulation, courseware, and testing from a centralized LearningManagement System. It is specifically designed to maintain a high-degree of proficiency in well

control operations. By providing a system that allows practice to developproficiency, the Well Control CAT undoubtedly maximizes well control

knowledge and skills, thus ensuring proper recognition and response to

operational contingencies.

Learning Can Be Fun!Most of us dread training; but as humans, we love to learn .

Current systems reward successful test taking with a

certification at the end. With Well Control CAT, we shiftour focus to real learning, increasing critical recognition,

evaluation, and response skills, so your crews learn how to

do the job right each and every time. Plus, its portable; no

more sending crews to training sessions. With our system,

the training comes to you, saving time and money.

How Do People Learn?Do people learn by reading, listening, or watching; or do they

learn by doing? Most of us learn hands on, or actively. Did youknow that we typically only retain 10% of what we read,

50% of what we see & hear, but we retain 90% of what we

do! This is a big reason why the IADC Well Control Committee

recently mandated an increase in simulation for WellCAP

certification. With the WCCAT, each student will experience

hours of dedicated hands on training designed to achieve and

maintain a defined standard, a preferable alternative to group

simulator sessions with minimal individual hands on time.

Setting the New Standardin Well Control LearningWith the WCCAT, a Virtual Instructor (VI) facilitates each simulation session , guiding

you through the content and assessing your performance against objective standards,

standards vetted by industry respected Subject Matter Experts. For each task evaluated by

the VI, you’ll be assessed against the following grading standards:

4 – flawless performance

3 – minor errors, self-corrects, does not detract from overall performance

2 – moderate errors, self corrects

1 –significant errors, requires instructor assistance

0 – unable to accomplish task

You are considered proficient if you score a 2 or above on each objective. If you score less than

a 2 on a learning objective, simply redo the session until you get a 2 or higher for all objectives.Systematically engineered training such as this enables training managers to both

define and measure proficiency, and make course adjustments based on the results.

What is it to be proficient in any given well control task? Do we agree with the standards?

How are we performing against them? If we are falling short, is the training insufficient or is

the standard unreasonable? This fundamental approach to training is critical in high reliability

industries, where mistakes can have disastrous and unacceptable consequences. Personnel

must be proficient, trained to take timely and appropriate steps to prevent damage to

equipment and worse, loss of life.

Maintaining the Standard The intent of this training is to maintain Well Control

proficiency at acceptable levels. We recognize that inthe 2-year time span between WellCAP courses, Well

Control knowledge and skill levels deteriorate if not

regularly applied in a practical setting. Well Control by

its very nature demands a higher frequency of training

to maintain proficiency. Therefore, WCCAT students can

train while on hitch in between WellCAP/IWCF courses

to prevent the inevitable decline in proficiency illustrated

in the graph. Each lesson is comprised of knowledge and

skill training with emphasis on kick detection & shut-in

and follow on secondary well control operations.

Help Us Make It Better…Every lesson will provide students an opportunity to provide

feedback and evaluate the training system as a whole.

The surveys will help to identify opportunities to improve

the overall well control readiness of your company.
