What will I cover?
• What is scenario based learning?
• The core principles
• The benefits – both to the organisation and the individual
• What sort of training is it best suited for?

Hi, I’m James.
I have been working at the hotel for 3 months now. Today I have been allocated to work in functions.
Scenario Based Learning - Kristi Abbott 4
James’s Training: OPTION 1
+In an event of an
emergency you are required to blah blah
blah….
Received when he first started at the hotel and mainly
forgotten…
Scenario Based Learning - Kristi Abbott 5
James is at work in functions when the fire alarm goes off. There is no scheduled drill today….
What does he do?

Scenario Based Learning - Kristi Abbott 7
Problem:
OPTION 1:
+ = Easily forgotten
Training material is not easy to recall as it:
•Relies on short term memory•Is not contextualised•Has no emotional relevance
Scenario Based Learning - Kristi Abbott 8
James’s Training: OPTION 2
• Scenario based training– Completed as needed (perhaps the night before)– At home or at the hotel
+
Scenario Based Learning - Kristi Abbott 9
Benefits
• Training material is easy to recall as scenarios:– support long term remembering– require decision making that provides memory retrieval practice – enables context triggered remembering– enables language triggered remembering– And culturally relevant scenarios boost learning and performance
Reference: Will Thalheimer, PhD. Using Linguistically, Culturally, and Situationally Appropriate Scenarios to Support Real-World Remembering

What will James
choose to do?
Principle 1: A character faces a challenge
Scenario Based Learning - Kristi Abbott 11
More detail to help him decide …
Create a story in which they can become engaged…
Scenario Based Learning - Kristi Abbott 12
Principle 2: Show don’t tell…
The consequences of his decisions start to become clear as the scenario rolls
out…
Scenario Based Learning - Kristi Abbott 13
Principle 3: Make it a conversation
The storyline engages James, drawing him in and encouraging him to learn
Scenario Based Learning - Kristi Abbott 14
James realises the
consequences of his decisions and
why they were/were not optimal in this
situation…
Principle 4: It’s the design not the technology
Scenario Based Learning - Kristi Abbott 15
And James is able to read the hotel’s official policy so
he knows the correct thing to do in the event it occurs
And he can then try again now that
he has more information to help
him make the correct choice
The design engages and immerses them in the learning…the academic rigour is still integral but does not dominate
Scenario Based Learning - Kristi Abbott 16
Additional information
available to help him decide
Principle 5: Lead with the activities
Scenario Based Learning - Kristi Abbott 17
As well as evacuation plans relevant to this
particular scenario
Information is shared after the activity – and when relevant to the learner, rather than before and then easily forgotten…

Principle 5: Make them care
Scenario Based Learning - Kristi Abbott 19
Principle 7: Application not regurgitation
OPTION 1:
OPTION 2:
+
+ + +
= Easily forgotten
= Retained knowledge

Therefore - The core principles
• As borrowed from Cathy Moore (www.MakingChangeBlog.com): 1. A character faces a challenge
2. Show don’t tell
3. Make it a conversation
4. It’s the design not the technology
5. Lead with the activities
6. Give them a reason to care
7. Application not regurgitation

The benefits – for the organisation
• Teacher led learning…
• Text book learning…
• vs. scenario based learning…
Scenario Based Learning - Kristi Abbott 22
The benefits – for the individual…
Practice + Mastery + Emotional connection + Realistic context + Availability + Individualised
= Engaging and immersive learning
Scenario Based Learning - Kristi Abbott 23
What sort of training is it best suited for?
• Soft skill training– Leadership– Project management– Team development
• Training that is seeking behavioural change
• Compliance training
• Safety & Awareness training
Scenario Based Learning - Kristi Abbott 24
How to create?
• Many providers that offer platforms for simulation
• My business
• Benefits of using an existing provider:– Huge cost savings– Learned expertise in instruction design and methodology– Existing library of scenarios and graphics to draw from– Time savings
