I am a soon to be retired Metropolitan police officer having spent most of my career in various roles in four of the most exacting and demanding parts of the organisation, namely the Anti-Terrorist Branch, the Anti-Corruption Command, the Standards and Intelligence Command and Operation Trident.

I am computer literate and experienced in the use of many software applications such as HOLMES (database used nationally by Police Services to investigate major/large scale crime), MPS intelligence databases and Microsoft products. I have also undergone training as an analyst having completed an ANACAPA course and the i2 Analysts Notebooks course. I have used these competencies to good effect throughout my police career.

I am experienced in the analysis of large sets of data using various products and converting them into Excel to enable their development into a usable format for analysis.

I was posted to the Strategic Intelligence Desk within the Intelligence Development Group (IDG) of the Anti Corruption Command. I have a working knowledge of the National Intelligence Model (NIM) and intelligence gathering procedures and am aware of the provisions of the Data Protection Act (1998).

As part of the Strategic Intelligence Desk I was part of a small team with the primary function of producing the Strategic Intelligence Assessment (SIA) (as per the NIM), on behalf of the Standards and Intelligence Command (DPS). The SIA is used to identify any misconduct issues and trends so that immediate action can be undertaken before these issues can evolve into a major problem thus damaging the reputation of the MPS. It is also used to identify any knowledge gaps for further research consideration.

I was also solely responsible for producing complex reports on Professional Standards within certain Borough policing areas and Operational Commands. To compile these reports I would draw on data from various MPS database sources and present them personally to the Commander, Department of Professional Standards (DPS) and the Borough or Command Senior Manager These reports were always well received albeit that the content may sometimes have been unpalatable.

Throughout my police career I have had to communicate with all rank levels throughout different police service areas and also with external agencies such as the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), Treasury Counsel and the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC)

Key Competencies

Page 4: SimonBall-CV

I regularly attended the Strategic Tasking and Co-ordinating Group meetings chaired by the Commander DPS where the SIA was presented. During meetings I have always been a willing contributor and have promoted ideas and strategies that were regularly adopted.

Professional standards within every role I have undertaken are high and maintained at that level in the knowledge that outside bodies, such as the IPCC, could review all aspects of every enquiry.

My role within one operation was a pivotal one normally carried out by a supervising officer. I had to brief individual team members and senior officers regarding the current status and progress of the investigation. I communicate in a friendly and approachable manner and am always willing to assist and advise colleagues in any way.

My approach to all work is methodical with a keen eye for detail due to the nature of policing. Any missed piece of evidence or intelligence will have a detrimental effect on any enquiry. As part of my current role on a murder investigation team I have to quality assure work completed by others before it can be registered onto the HOLMES system. Once placed on the system it is then my job to identify and decide what further work is to be undertaken.

During my previous work in the MPS I have demonstrated the ability to work successfully within small, dedicated teams of colleagues in sometimes highly demanding circumstances under pressure to achieve team goals and deadlines. I liaise constantly with other staff members in an effort to prioritise workloads and actively help and support others to achieve their aims by offering practical support and assistance.

I have regularly I put forward creative and innovative ideas to overcome practical problems facing investigations, as well as implementing and developing ideas that have since been employed on other enquiries and become best practice.
