A preliminary inquiry date has been set for a Princeton man charged with two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder in a triple shooting.

John Ike Koopmans, 49, is accused of kill-ing Robert Keith Wharton and Rosemary Fox in a shooting that took place at an Old Hedley Road property in Princeton on March 30. Another man suffered a gun shot wound and was taken to hospital.

RCMP did not provide much information on the motives or backgrounds of the individ-uals involved at the time of the incident stating it would come out in the court proceedings.

The four-day preliminary inquiry is sched-uled for Feb. 11, 2014. The purpose of a pre-liminary inquiry is to determine if the crown has sufficient evidence to set the matter down for trial.

The Princeton RCMP and RCMP South Okanagan Traffic Services attended to a single vehicle fatal collision involving a commercial transport truck early Friday morning.

On October 25, 2013 at 5:41 a.m. the Princeton RCMP and RCMP South Okanagan Traffic Services attended to a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred on Highway 3 approximately 26 kms east of Princeton, BC near Bromley Rock. The collision involved a tractor trailer unit that had gone off the road with the trailer blocking both lanes of traffic. The lone male driver was pro-nounced dead on the scene. Road conditions and weather conditions were poor at the time of the collision with dense fog and ice covered roads.

The man was from the Lower Mainland with the truck being operated by a LMD transport company.

The highway reopened just after 4:30 p.m.Further information may be provided by the BC Coroners Service when available.

Dr. Ella Monro joins the medical team

The decision to make the move to Princeton was fairly easy for Dr. Ella Monro.

Along with husband Paul, who works at Copper Mountain Mine, the couple feels Princeton is the place to put down roots.

“It’s really pretty here,” said Monro, “and everyone has been so nice and welcoming.”

The couple, along with their family of cats and dogs, plan to spend their off-time enjoying the outdoor recreation between the Okanagan, Similkameen Valley and Manning Park.

Prior to making the decision to move to Princeton, Monro had spent a week working with Dr. Eva Idanwekhai and nurse practitioner, Tanya Terkeurs. She quickly found the medical team here in Princeton was a good fit for her.

“Good working relationships are important, said Monro, “they are a large part of why I am here.”

Support Our Health Care (SOHC) shared their list of priorities for the upcoming year at the annual general meeting held on Oct. 23.

To begin, they will continue to participate in the Princeton Health Care Steering Committee and con-tinue working on the implemen-tation of the Health Care Action Framework Plan.

VICTORIA – With the B.C. and federal governments strug-gling to climb out of operating deficits, it’s a good time for the release of Mark Milke’s book Tax Me, I’m Canadian.

The book outlines the history of taxes in Canada, detailing how Canada’s tax system was initially built to mimic the United States system in the late 19th century.

Included are chapters on the global meltdown of 2009, the surge of pension liabilities as the baby boomers retire and the flawed logic behind the “Occupy” and “Idle No More” protests.

Some readers will note that Milke works for the Fraser Institute and was previously B.C. director of the Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation. The book is not just an argument for cutting taxes. It also dismantles persistent myths that income taxes are illegal, and attacks what Milke calls “Canada’s cor-porate welfare carnival.”

Many will be able to identify some top names in the government subsidy game: Bombardier, General Motors, Rolls Royce Canada.

Some will also be well aware that our Conservative federal government has continued to pour out “regional development” and other funds around the country.

But I did not know that Industry Canada grants were handed out to pizza parlours in Kamloops, or to help open gas stations or convenience stores in Kelowna, Vernon and Chilliwack.

Milke makes a useful point for B.C. about royalty rates for timber, natural gas and other resources. They are resource rents, and if they are too high the tenants will move out. Reducing them isn’t a subsidy, especially if it leads to big revenue gains as B.C.’s unconventional shale gas incentives have done.

On the Occupy movement: The infamous “one per cent,” who in Canada earn $250,000 a year or more, earned 10 per cent of all income and paid 20 per cent of all taxes in 2010. The bottom 73 per cent of tax filers paid just 17 per cent of all taxes. About a third paid no tax.

On Idle No More: When Attawapiskat Chief Teresa Spence played to the Ottawa media with her soup strike, former Liberal leader Bob Rae suggested a nearby diamond mine should share more revenue.

Milke does omit the substantial support and employment that mine provides, and gloss-es over the misguided blockades that disrupted that and other job-creating enterprises. But he does detail the disastrous effects of passive resource wealth bestowed on impoverished aboriginal com-munities, and contrasts it with the success stories of reserves that build their own enterprises through hard work.

On public sector pensions: Milke notes that historically, public employees traded higher wages

for better benefits and job security. Taxpayers have to cover their personal pension contributions (as a portion of those wages) as well as the employer contributions, plus the “defined benefit” payout, which has to be subsidized far beyond what the pension fund can support.

The recent B.C. political crisis over adoption of the har-monized sales tax showed that there is too much emotion and too little knowledge about how taxes work. This book is a step towards addressing that.

Health care workers and visitors in patient care areas will be required to have the cur-rent influenza vaccination or wear a mask when the annual influenza season returns in December.

Health care union objections to the policy were rejected by a labour arbitrator’s rul-ing this week, a decision Provincial Health Officer Dr. Perry Kendall called “good news for patients.”

The policy can now be enforced for staff across all of B.C.’s health authorities, par-ticularly in long-term care facilities, Kendall said Thursday. Visitors will be on an “honour system” to keep their flu shots up to date or use a mask when they visit friends and rela-tives, he said.

The current influenza vaccine is available from doctors and pharmacies around the province, and is free to those with chronic conditions or who come in contact with peo-ple who are at higher risk of serious compli-cations from influenza. To find out if you are eligible for a free vaccine, ask your doctor or pharmacist, or call HealthLink BC at 8-1-1.

U.S. health care facilities have similar rules and voluntary compliance of staff members is very high, said Kendall, who has been push-ing for the restriction for some time. Health employers now have the option of progressive discipline to make sure employees protect against passing on influenza virus to vulner-able patients.

“We obviously hope it won’t come to that, because we believe that health care workers do care for their patients,” Kendall said.

The Health Sciences Association, a union representing lab techs and other specialists in the health care system, had argued that its members were entitled to make their own decision on whether to get the annual vaccine. It is formulated each year by international health authorities, based on the dominant strains of influenza that are found around the world.

Kendall said the arbitrator accepted research findings from the University of Minnesota that found the vaccine to be 90 per cent effective in years when it is a “good match” with the virus strain that emerges dur-ing winter.

The study found that a less accurate match causes the effectiveness to drop as low as 40 per cent, but Kendall noted that is better than zero protection, which is what skipping the flu shot provides.

Arbitrator Robert Diebolt wrote that given the seriousness of influenza, a severe respi-ratory condition that causes death in frail elderly people each winter, increasing immu-nization protection is a reasonable policy for health care facilities.

Dear Editor,We are writing to the residents

of our Princeton community with heavy hearts as a warning to other pet owners and to ask for any infor-mation that residents may have.

During the evening of Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013, a person or persons shot and killed one of our beloved miniature donkeys in the China Ridge area. She was in her pen on our property, her lifeless body discovered my my daughter on her way to school Friday morning.

Maple was a very much loved, comical and affectionate part of our family, as well as a companion

to our other mini, Rosebud. It is heartbreaking to hear Rosebud’s mournful brays as she looks for her companion.

If anyone has any information as to the identity of the individual(s) responsible for this horrible act, we ask that you forward it to the Princeton RCMP.

To our friends, coworkers an community members who have shown our family kind words and support, we thank you.

Clearing up concernsDear Editor,Well, it seems I have created a bit of a stir for

some residents of this wonderful town and sur-rounding area with my Letter to the Editor pub-lished last week and now must withdraw or try to explain some of my comments, so here goes…

I have now learned that my comments about seeing doctors at the clinic in the hospital have been taken out of context by a few or perhaps I did not word my thoughts appropriately.

You can and will have your own doctor who will get to know you on a medical basis and who would be available to you. The situation is that if your personal doctor is not available for an emergency, you will see another doctor or you may be referred to the clinic as a walk - in patient.

I have also learned that the transportation survey many of us completed has been studied and that prior to the survey committees were working on solving this problem of transport to the clinic for those who can not drive themselves or can not afford to pay to get up to the clinic… a phone number is soon to be published in the papers where people can phone, say ‘ I have an appointment with my doctor and could I please get a ride to the clinic,’ at such and such a time.

Another thing I have learned is that the hos-pital will have (or perhaps already has recently installed) tele-help - where doctors have access to specialists who can receive your information via tele-help and advise the local doctors as to what care is necessary to help you, the patient.

If my previous letter has put some people into panic mode I do apologize - I was not trying to cause problems, rather I was trying to express my concerns. They have now been cleared up to me and now I do the same back to you. I am truly hopeful that the plans in progress, many of which we are not yet aware, will bring Princeton into the future.

Halloween tips for parents and homeowners from What To Do

With The Kids® What To Do With The Kids® is not only the website that parents go to when they want to know what to do with their kids, but also a popular place to visit when planning your Halloween festivities.

Our Halloween collection includes tips on how to create a haunted house, throw a spooktacular Halloween party featur-ing party invitations and Halloween crafts to entertain the kids. The kids can have their faces painted easily with a simple yet creative design and your jack-o-lantern will be the envy of the neighborhood when using one of our unique pumpkin stencils. We have also developed two separate trick or treat tip sheets for parents taking their kids out and for the homeowners who hand out the goodies. Here are a few tips that will hopefully prepare parents for make the evening fun for everyone.• Encourage the kids to use facial make up instead of a mask.• Spend the extra dollar and purchase quality make-up. You don’t want your kid to have that same look weeks later.• If possible, design the costume to accommodate a sweater or even a jacket underneath depending on the weather.• Make sure that all costumes and accessories are flame resis-tant.

• Keep in mind how much walking they’ll be doing for their age. You don’t want to have to carry your little ghoul home.• Carry extra bags to dump candy in so the kids don’t get overly tired.• If you have more than one kid to supervise, try bringing a wagon or cart to unload the candy in as they go door to door.• If you’re taking other kids with you, set out the rules before you leave and make sure they understand.• Instruct the kids to stay with you and off the lawns and out of the gardens.• Remind the kids to say thank you, even if they get crappy candy.• Be prepared to carry their props after a while.• Inspect all candy when you get home. Throw away home-made, unwrapped or open candy.• Let them have one piece of wrapped candy while on the walk as a treat/break.• Bring a flashlight and give them glow sticks to wear.• Don’t let them walk in the middle of the streets. Cars will still travel on roads October 31st.• If the front light is out but they have Halloween decorations, there is a good chance that they have no more candy.• If the lights are out and don’t have any decorations, the peo-ple are most likely hiding in the back and have no candy to give.• Carry a small, portable first aid kit for those little cuts and injuries.• Many people bring their dogs with them and dress them up in costumes such as a hot dog or a devil. Instruct the kids to ask the owner if they can pet the animal BEFORE they do. There is a good chance that the animal is embarrassed to be in a costume and may want to take it out on a kid.• When the kids go to the door, stay close by and watch care-fully.• Set a strict curfew for older kids that go out on their own.• Kids are NEVER to go into the house unless YOU know them.If you have to drive, slow down more than usual.• Give the kids a snack before they go out. They won’t complain about being hungry and want to eat the candy.• Take half the candy and place it in the freezer for use in the summer.Here are a few tips for homeowners on Halloween:1. Keep the path to your door clear of all obstacles and well

lit.2. Don’t terrorize the kids. It’s all about fun and not making

them wet their pants.3. Be extremely careful with the candle in your pumpkin so

that nothing bursts into flames, including a kid’s costume. Consider using a battery powered light or glow sticks.

4. Use flashlights, glow sticks or electric lights with the power cord safe and secured.

5. If you have a dog, keep it in another room and away from the door.

6. If you’re going to give candy, give only store bought and wrapped items such as chocolate bars, chips, etc. Loose candy will be thrown out by the parents.

7. Alternative giving can include pencils, erasers or stickers with a Halloween theme.8. If you’ve spent a lot of time on your Halloween display, you may want to consider putting some sort of SAFE fencing around it so that everyone can enjoy it without it being trampled.9. Halloween candy is magically calorie and fat free on October 31st so feel free to use the “one for you, one for me” rule.

When the Trans Canada Trail section was opened locally, runners, walkers, bicyclists and horseback riders carried the ceremonial torch along the trail. From Pinewood to the Teepee Lakes Resort on the Princeton-Summerland Road, the torch was carried via dog team.

Paula and Richard Pateman have hosted a yearly ‘Dryland Fun Run’ along the Trans Canada Trail for the past five years.

The fun run stems from a dog sledding sport called ‘Dryland Mushing or Urban Trail Mushing’ that the Pateman’s practice locally.

Instead of sleds on the snow, dogs train with scooters, training carts or all-terrain vehicles (ATVs).

They host the yearly race at their home along the trail as a weekend of fun and friendship with friends from across Canada and the U.S.A.

“It’s a weekend of fun and great training time as well,” says Paula Pateman of the event. “This

is a wonderful way to use our trail and enjoy our area.”

On Saturday, Nov. 9 the Pateman’s will host the 2013 Fun Run and extend an invitation to locals to come out to meet the mushers and their teams.

It is advised that visitors not approach dog teams without the mushers permission and that pet dogs are best left at home to avoid any com-plications while you visit. Teams will start out at Pinewood and arrive intermittently at the Teepee Lakes Resort Cafe beginning at noon, where the mushers will be happy to talk to you about the sport and introduce you to their teams.

For directions, take the Princeton-Summerland Road (Hwy. 40) to the community of Bankier. You will see the base resort and store/cafe on your left.

Family Fun Night 2013

The Princeton Exhibition Grounds became the host for spooks, creeps and freaks on Saturday October 26. Many volunteers including Princeton Ambassador Destiny Earle (top) and Robbie Crucil (bottom) played parts in the Spook House dur-ing the third annual Halloween Family Fun Night. Fireworks, games, crafts and ‘free grubs’ from the concession were enjoyed. More than a few screams were heard—but those that made it through were rewarded with candy treats. The parade begins at 10:45 am, then moves to the square for the service and laying of the Wreaths.

Del Cemulini, one of Princeton Legions past presidents and life members recently passed away in Penticton. He was a very active member while in Princeton, returning forRemembrance Day ceremonies each year. He will be missed by many.

On Friday, January 10, 2014 the Installation of the 2014 executive board and officers as well as the Honours and Awards Ceremony will be held. This will be a pot luck din-ner for all Legion Members. Please bring a dish to share with all your comrades. Cocktails will be at 5 pm, dinner at 6 pm followed by the ceremonies.

Lunches will be available occasionally on Saturdays at noon, prior to the meat draws. Soup and sandwiches, ham-burgers or potato salad at very reasonable prices. The next Saturday Luncheon will be held on November 9.

Crispy chicken done healthy Cast-Iron Skillet Chicken With Farro and Brussels SproutsServes 41 cup, semi-pearled farro, preferably Anson Mills3 cups water1 pound Brussels sprouts (about 32 golf ball-size sprouts)2 chickens, about 4 pounds each2 tablespoons grapeseed oil3 cloves garlic, shaved on a mandoline2 cups warm chicken stock2 tablespoons olive oil1/4 cup lemon juice1/4 cup tahini sauce Salt and ground black pepper to taste1. Preheat oven to 500o F.2. Soak the farro water for 30 minutes. Drain off the water & rinse the grains with cold water. Put the farro in a 2-quart saucepan & add enough fresh cold water to cover. Bring to a boil, then cut the heat down to low, cover, & simmer until tender yet still chewy, about 20 minutes. Drain off any excess liquid & spread the farro on a baking sheet to cool. You should end up with about 2 cups of cooked farro.3. Meanwhile, peel off the outer green leaves of the Brussels sprouts until you have 4 cups. Reserve the inner heads for another use.4. Cut up the chickens into leg-thigh & breast-wing portions with the skin still attached. For each leg-thigh portion, bend the leg away from the body, cut down to the joint, then bend the joint to break it. Cut between the ball & socket, then down around the carcass to remove the entire leg-thigh portion.

For each breast-wing portion, cut down along one side of the breastbone, then run the knife along the contour of the rib cage and around the wishbone to begin removing the breast from the body. When you get to the joint connecting the wing to the body, grab both wing and breast together and cut through the wing joint to remove breast and wing in one piece. Score the meat around the next wing joint closest to the breast, cutting down to bone and scraping with the knife so the bone is fairly clean. Bend the joint to break it and remove the wing. The resulting boneless breast with the first wing bone attached and exposed is called an airline breast. It looks nicer than the boneless breast by itself, and the wing bone helps keep the meat moist during cooking.5. Cut off any excess flaps of skin and pat the chicken very dry with a paper tow-el. Generously season the chicken on all sides with salt and pepper. Heat two large cast-iron skillets over medium heat. Add enough grapeseed oil to coat the bottom of

each pan. Put the chicken legs in one pan, skin side down, and put the breasts in the other pan, also skin side down. Crank the heat up to medium-high and cook until the skin is nicely browned, about 4 minutes. No need to peek; just let the chicken cook undisturbed. When the skin is browned, it will release easily from the pan and the meat will start to pull away from the bone. Turn the leg-thigh portions and cook for 1 more minute skin side up, but let the breasts cook skin side down the entire time.6. Place both skillets in the oven and roast for 5 minutes. Carefully pull out the pan with the legs, turn the legs skin side down once again, and return to the oven for 3 more minutes. The breasts will still be skin side down, remember; they do not get turned at all. After a total of 8 minutes, carefully pull both skillets from the oven, transfer the chicken to a large plate, and tent with foil to keep warm.

7. Using mitts, carefully pour out and discard the accumu-

lated fat from the pans. Heat one pan over high heat until smoking hot. Add the cooled farro to the pan, spreading to evenly cover the bottom (save any leftover farro for another use; it makes a great salad). Again with the mitts, grab the handle and shake and toss the farro so it heats through evenly. After about 3 minutes, the farro will begin to caramelize and puff. Add the Brussels sprout leaves and stir nonstop for 1 minute. Add the garlic and warm chicken stock, then shake and toss the mixture for 2 more minutes, until almost all of the liquid is gone. The farro will absorb the stock and release its starch to thicken the remaining liquid, creating a creamy mixture.8. Stir in the olive oil, lemon juice, a pinch of salt, and any accumulated chicken juices from the plate. Taste and adjust the seasonings as needed; with all that lemon juice in the farro, the dish screams for salt to balance it out.9. To serve, drizzle a circle of tahini sauce in the center of the plate, and top with a scoop of farro and a chicken breast and leg.
