In this essay I am going to compare the differences and similarities of the film spirited away and Alice in wonderland, I am also going to explore the narrative and target audience. Spirited away is an Japanese animated fantasy adventure film, and it is about a girl called Chihiro and her family's move to the suburbs, the 10-year-old girl wonders into a world ruled by gods, witches, and monsters; where humans are changed into animals; and a bathhouse for these creatures. Alice in wonderland is an English novel written by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson which was turned into a film. It is about a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world, populated by peculiar creatures.

In both of the films they have many similarities, they have very similar narratives, such as in Spirited Away when the girl parents go through the tunnel into a different world it is very similar when in Alice in Wonderland, Alice goes down a rabbit hole into a different world. In spirited away they have talking creatures in it and in the Disney film Shrek they also have talking creatures and animals in it. Although it isn’t realistic it brings humour to the films. Also in both Spirited away and many other Disney films the good always wins over evil. Another similarity that Spirited Away has with Disney films is that they are both animated films. Spirited Away can also have many differences to Disney films as they are set in completely different locations and cultures, Spirited Away is set in Japan where as Alice in Wonderland is set in England. In Disney films we are always clear of who is good and who is evil, where as in Spirited away we are not too sure who is good or evil in the film. Also the characters in Spirited Away are all ugly, unattractive and quite scary where as in a Disney film they are always attractive and cuddly characters like Alice in Wonderland.

From analysing both Spirited away and Disney films I would say that I would prefer to watch as Disney film because it has a typical story line for Disney films and anyone from any age can watch a Disney film and the target audience for a Disney film is any age as most Disney films are watch together as a family.
