The Workshops Rail Museum – ‘‘Push and Pull’ trail ׀Year 2 3
Purpose and Overview
The following activities are based on the various zones throughout The Workshops Rail Museum. They are aimed at helping students develop an understanding of the components of simple machines and systems, such as stationary objects being subjected to pushes and pulls, and how these apply to railway contexts. These activities are aligned with the Australian Curriculum: Science content strands of Science Understanding, Science as a Human Endeavour, and Science Enquiry Skills for Year 2 students. Students will further develop and apply their knowledge and understanding of the following Science sub-strands:
Science Understanding – Physical sciences Science as Human Endeavour – Nature and development of science Science Enquiry Skills – Questioning and predicting; Planning and
conducting; and Communicating Context for learning The activities require students to use a range of thinking skills in identifying the various answers to questions. Many are hands on in nature and are stepping stones to further study and acquisition of knowledge. Teachers should encourage students to explore further the answers to the various questions.

Curriculum Links
The Years 2 curriculum links are elaborated in the following tables:
The Australian National Curriculum: Science
Science Understanding – Physical sciences
A push or pull affects how an object moves or changes shape (ACSSU033)
Elaborations: exploring the way objects move on land exploring how different strengths of pushes
and pulls affect the movement of objects
Science as Human Endeavour – Nature and development of science
Science involves asking questions about, and describing changes in, objects and events (ACSHE034)
Elaboration: suggesting how everyday items work, using
knowledge of forces or materials
Science Inquiry Skills
Questioning and predicting Respond to and pose questions, and make predictions about familiar objects and events (ACSIS037)
Elaboration: thinking about ‘What will happen if…?’ type
questions about everyday objects and events
Planning and conducting Participate in different types of guided investigations to explore and answer questions, such as manipulating material, testing ideas, and accessing information sources (ACSIS038)
Elaboration: manipulating objects and materials and
making observations of the results
Communicating Represent and communicate observations and ideas in a variety of ways such as oral and written language, drawing and role play (ACSIS042)
Elaborations: presenting ideas to other students, both one-
on-one and in small groups discussing with others what was discovered
from an investigation
