Twin-track strategy of solar controland thermal insulation usingthe SILVERSTAR®COMBI coating.

Efficient SILVERSTAR COMBI coatings

The thermally insulating selective SILVERSTAR COMBI coatingsare a boon to modern architecture. A range of coating systemssuitable for a wide variety of applications offers a tailored selec-tion of solar control, thermal insulation and light transmissionproperties to planners and architects. The functions, combined inmore respects than one, optimise in a cost-efficient way the over-all energy management of the building. The task of reducing theheat transition to an absolute minimum is convincingly achieved. The results can be felt not only in the markedly lower heatingcosts, but also in the palpable gain in comfort.

Thanks to outstanding solar control properties, heating up of theinteriors is prevented, and incident solar energy is effectively re-flected away. This represents a major contribution towards mini-mising the costs for cooling energy. But passive-solar energygains are also possible, in line with legal regulations. This func-tion unit is consistant in all SILVERSTAR COMBI coatings with un-beatable transparency. Rooms with good natural light achieve abalance between pleasant working conditions and reduced arti-ficial lighting.

Excellent selectivity is the key feature of modern solar controlcoatings. This balance in efficiency between light transmissionand overall energy transmittance is the result of a complex coat-ing system. The long-wave infra-red rays, mainly responsible forheating up interiors, are prevented from passing through – theyare effectively reflected by the coating. The shorter-wave visiblerays by contrast can pass through almost unhindered.

Wide range of COMBI coatings for a wide range of uses

High performance in glass makes the latter usable in a widerange of applications. These multifunctional products are appre-ciated not only for the large area glass facades but in new hous-ing projects, refurbishment work and for glass annexes, inparticularly conservatories where the all round properties comeinto their own. Depending on where the products are used, theglass can be toughened safety glass or laminated safety glass.

In dialogue with the surroundings

A restrained appearance symbolises openness yet elegance. Thanks to its attractive transparency and a choice between ex-cellent colour neutrality or defined colour nuances, the glazingblends harmoniously into any existing building environment. Thestylistic device of colour reflections extends the architectonicdesign options. The entire outer surface of a building can betransformed into a single unit by the use of spandrel glazing.

Intelligent solar control with SILVERSTAR

SILVERSTAR SUNSTOP T solar control glazing is distinguishedby an enormously low solar energy transmittance. The latter ef-ficiently avoids an undesirable overheating of the premises whileensuring a high light transmission and a remarkable outside as-pect. The exemplary nature of its reflection values helps toachieve lower energy consumption by air-conditioning equip-ment, and hence a marked reduction in costs.

Thanks to their neutral or colour-shaded reflections in the glassfrontages, the SILVERSTAR SUNSTOP T glazings offer new creativeprospects to the designers. The letter “T” stands for “temperable”,which means that the glass can be heated, i.e. tempered. The layerdesigns of the SUNSTOP T products range allow cutting them tosize and, if necessary, printing and tempering them directly at theglass processor’s premises. This ensures the planers and archi-tects shorter and respected delivery deadlines.

Showing its strength in bitter cold

In combination with a neutral thermal insulation coating thatfaces the solar control coating, an important contribution is madetowards limiting heat losses. This is crucial not only in terms ofenvironmental protection – by reducing the output of the poison-ous carbon dioxide harmful to the climate – but also as a holis-tic approach to minimising costs. The highly effective thermalinsulation coating makes itself felt in a greater feeling of com-fort, even in the immediate vicinity of the glass surface.

Facing the sun effectively

The building of contemporary glass structures is directly linkedto environmentally compatible energy-saving concepts. This iswhy perfect interaction between energy transmittance andtranslucency is so highly rated. The low overall energy transmit-tance, or g value, contributes to a considerable reduction of thecooling energy requirement, since heating up inside the buildingis greatly reduced. The necessity to permanently reduce the energy costs for air-conditioning systems and nevertheless maintain an agreeabletemperature level in interiors can today be planned for individu-ally. Highly effective solar control therefore allows full use of nat-ural light. A high workplace quality with optimum use of daylightalso reduces the need for artificial lighting.

Effective play of colour with solar energy

To give glass facades a specific character, accentuation by meansof colour reflections is employed as an individual design aid. Thecolour aesthetics of a building encased in glass self-confidentlyassert a specific identity. Coloured glass reflections are an idealway of influencing cityscapes or enhancing contemporary archi-tecture. The impressive appearance can be complemented byspandrel glazing.

Seeing to architectonic ideas.

Light transmission

Natural daylight is not only more agreeable than artificial light tothe human eye, it also affects our metabolism and hormone bal-ance. The light transmission of a glazing system is the percent-age of sunlight in the visible light range that is allowed to passfrom the outside into the interior. The LT value is partly depend-ent on the coating systems. SILVERSTAR COMBI coatings in par-ticular are optimised to select between light and heat energyfrom the sun's rays.

b factor (SC = Shading Coefficient)

The b factor is the quotient from the overall energy transmittanceof a glazing system and the overall energy transmittance of anuncoated insulation glass. The b factor is therefore a measure ofthe solar control effect. The g value of the uncoated two-sheetinsulation glass is here set at 80 % as a constant.Example: SILVERSTAR SUNSTOP T Blue 30 has an overallenergy transmittance of 22 % as per EN 410.

b factor =0.22

= 0.280.80

Radiation absorption

The radiation absorption or energy absorption is understood asthat proportion of radiation in the entire range of the solar spec-trum that is absorbed by the glazing.

High radiation absorption

For glass combinations with a radiation absorption factor of morethan 50 %, the solar control glass should generally be tempered.

UV transmission

SILVERSTAR COMBI and SILVERSTAR SUNSTOP T solar controlglasses have – unlike normal glass - considerably lower UVtransmission values.

Colour reproduction index Ra in transmission

The colour reproduction index compares colour changes in ob-jects located behind the coated thermal insulation glass. For thetechnical test, a normal light source is used, The scale for Ragoes up to 100. The maximum Ra value attainable with a glazingsystem is 99.

Selectivity characteristic S

The selectivity characteristic indicates the ratio of translucency tooverall energy transmittance. This characteristic S evaluates thesolar control glasses in respect of the required high translu-cency relative to the low overall energy transmittance aimed at.A low selectivity characteristic expresses a favourable ratio.

S =Light transmission degree

Overall energy transmittance

Spandrel glazing

We recommend, for a well-harmonized glass frontage, theSWISSPANEL spandrel glasses. These glasses are suitable forwarm and cold facade structures. The spandrel glazing is as arule tempered, their minimum size is therefore 30 x 80 cm.

Chameleon effect

The reflection colour of coated solar control glasses is mainly af-fected by the incident light, so differing light conditions – for ex-ample overcast or clear skies – can alter the colour developmentof the glass. The colours of the surroundings also play an impor-tant role.

Tender documents

To draw up a precise quotation for solar control glasses, we keepdetailed tender documents for architects and planners. Thesedocuments are available from us on request.

Overall energy transmittance

The g value states how much energy of the incident solar energypasses through the glass into the interior. The value is made upof two parts: direct radiation transmission and secondary heatemission. Secondary heat emission results from the fact that theglass heats up as a result of the sunlight and then in turn emitsheat both inwards and outwards.
