(Dr. Mala Kapoor) Founder & Director Principal

Onset of Summer’s musk is welcomed by Silverliners,

besotted with our signature exemplary academic performance. It's indeed a matter of great pride to underline that 20 Shining Silverliners achieved more than 90% in Class XII results in their respective streams. Adding to that, 14 of their younger lot in Class X achieved CGPA 10! It is matter of great joy to note that we are winning and growing with more exemplary academic performance by every passing year. Arrival of Hindu-Solar New Year adds new spectrum of our undying zeal and inspire even better performance for the times ahead.Baisakhi holds a place of great importance among all, as the earth stands adorned with the colours of life, energy, and joy. The fields are full and the benevolence of nature is manifested with fields full of grain crops ready to be harvested. Undoubtedly legacy of Mother Earth that we continue to bestow on our children. In an inclusive concern we celebrated the India Hybrid Week. The Green Crusaders took up the project of Network 18 with a mission to create a mindset change in people about the use of fossil fuels, alternate technologies, greener planet and the triple bottom line with Anil Kumble our Indian Star Cricketer of yesteryears, endorsing this campaign. The entire activity provided an enriching learning experience. Our experiential learning trips include visits to places of social significance and provide an ecstasy of life to the young hearts. The environment and ambience we create fosters learning as it provides the students with opportunities to explore and grow through situations that challenge them to identify their strengths and reinforce them.I extend my best wishes to all the zealots as they go forthwith as responsible leaders set out on the task of nation building. While we are grateful to the members on board we are equally obliged to the various service providers who go selflessly teaching, touching and transforming lives.

With Best Wishes!!

India Hybrid Week

“Mother Earth is not what we inherit from our grandparents, but what

we borrow from our children.” It is with this thought and philosophy that Network 18 is taking up a crusade to engage with all stakeholders to create a mindset change about the use of fossil fuels, alternate technologies, greener planet and the triple bottom line.An Essay writing competition and a painting competition was organised in school which was recorded by CNBC TV 18. One winner from each, Kawaljeet Singh Batra and Muskan Bansal both from Cl XI were invited to the CNBC-TV18 studios for an interaction with leaders of the Hybrid technology world.

The winners were escorted by our Art Faculty, Mrs Kajal Saxena.Children participated in the interactive conversation on India 2030: What can the next generation do for the future of India. Former Cricketer Anil Kumble who is endorsing this campaign met our winners. It was a great learning experience for all of them.

Age and Brain power don’t go hand in hand

The brain works better when exposed to challenges. This is the theory that was behind a research conducted on 128 adults whose ages ranged between 59 and 80 years. Multi tasking is surely the best way to improve brain power i.e at least two jobs done simultaneously boosts the brain. This is further supported with MRI reports during the experiments done by Chelsea Wong at the University of Illinois. The best part of working up the brain is that there is better executive response and also improved cardio-respiratory health in the adults. This finding could have direct benefit to senior citizen who now can consciously keep themselves more active thinking-wise.

Are we programmed to be lazy? The works of Jessica Selinger at Simon Fraser University’s Locomotion Laboratory throws light on the fact as to why humans are lazy. Our ancestors believed in saving physical energy in order to gear up for the next hunt and we link ourselves to this lazy phase often. Shortcuts especially while walking or reaching a destination are proof enough as to why we choose a short movement to save our energy. Experiments conducted on humans indicate that we are capable of modifying our rhythm and energy well. This was proved when humans were interfaced with the exoskeleton of wired robots. Energy is worked out by the subconscious mind which optimizes with the help of our nervous system. We actually choose an efficient number of steps when we want to work out. So, next time, when someone complains you are lazy, you know why!

Beware of a 30,000 year old giant virusThe permafrost at Siberia reveals a giant virus Mollivirus sibericum which still has the potential to infect amoebas. This is at least 30,000 years old and was active during the Stone Age. Usually a virus is tiny but this is a giant one and the only solace is that it does not affect humans. The excessive melting of the frost as well as drilling ice lands may result in the virus getting active. The pathogenic viruses like small pox can be rendered active if it gains contact with these viruses. Jean-Michel Claverie and Chantal Abergel - Scientists at National Center for Scientific Research at Aix-Marseille University in France believe industrialization is the main reason.

Platform details on demandIn an initiative that will be a relief to passengers and their loved ones, the Chennai railway station will now allow passengers and their friends to get platform details of departing and arriving trains via SMS. The user needs to send an SMS to 139 with the train number to get the details.Alternatively, the users can also download the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) app to get the information.

Chintamani Nagesa Ramachandra Rao, also more popularly knownas C N R Rao is currently the Head of the Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India. Mr Rao has mainly worked in solid state and structural chemistry. He holds honorary doctorates from over 60 universities. In 2014, he was conferred with the Bharat Ratna which is the highest civilian award in our country. He is the third scientist after Sir C V Raman and former President A P J Abdul Kalam to be bestowed this honour.Mr CNR Rao, born in Bangalore was a child prodigy. He was an only child and was home tutored by his mother till he was 6 years old. He directly entered middle class where he was the youngest in the class but it did not prevent him from teaching his classmates. He passed his lower secondary exam when he was 10 years old and as a reward his father gave him 4 annas. He finished SSLC in another three years. At 17, he obtained the bachelors degree with a first class. He obtained a masters in Chemistry from the BHU at the age of 19. He did his PhD from Purdue University. True to form he completed his PhD in less than 3 years! In 1954, his first research paper was published in the Agra University Journal of Research. In this exclusive interview with Young Pioneer, Mr Rao walks us through memory lane including an incident where he met Sir C V Raman as an eleven year old. He also explains the lessons from life, the challenges faced by today’s children and society and how they can be overcome.

Young Pioneer (YP): You have achieved so much in your life. Are you contented?

C N R Rao : I have had the opportunity to carry out teaching and research in chemistry and advance materials for many years. I am extremely happy about this and I must say I am satisfied with what I have done. In science and in many other areas, there is no limit to excellence. So, one keeps on trying to improve further. I considered scientific research is one which has a limitless ladder of excellence. I am still climbing.

YP: Whom or what do you attribute your success to?

C N R Rao : Well whatever little success I have had, is mainly because of my deep interest in doing something in my subject and also publishing as many good papers as possible, comparable to the best in the world. I have been inspired by people like Michael Faraday who always felt that publishing good papers is very important. I still keep publishing at the age of 81.

YP: Have you had any setback in your life? How did you overcome it?

C N R Rao : Life has ups and downs, but one has to take them as they come and continue to work in the areas of where one has passion to accomplish something. One should not allow problems in life to interfere with one’s major interests.

YP: An incident about your school days that you relish

C N R Rao :From my school days, one of the things I particularly remember is my meeting Prof. C.V. Raman. I was 11 years old. He had asked two or three of the students to visit him in his laboratory at Indian Institute of Science. This was in the year 1945. I still remember spending almost an hour with Prof. Raman in his laboratory. It made a big impression on me.

YP: What do you think are the challenges faced by the children of today?

C N R Rao : Today’s children have many challenges. First

of all, we have confused the children. They have to take too many exams and they have got too many pressures from society and parents. The society and parents want them to study a particular subject whether they are interested in it or not. For example in Bangalore, parents push children generally to take up engineering or medicine. It is unfortunate that a country of this size has to have a situation where we do not allow children to pursue what they like. This country requires poets, philosophers, economists as well as scientist and engineers. I feel that children should be able to pick what they want and excel in those areas.

YP: If you were to give a tribute to your favourite teacher…

C N R Rao : I still remember my wonderful teachers in high school. Some of them would show demonstrations in class and even allowed me to do one or two small experiments. I was inspired by my school teachers in science.

YP: If you had an opportunity to start your life again, what path would you choose?

C N R Rao : If I have to live all over again, I would still be a scientist. I have enjoyed being a scientist. I would not like any change in my profession. What has been lucky for me is that I chose this. When I started my independent career as a scientist, as a member of the faculty at the

Indian Institute of Science in 1959. I decided to take up a new area where there were very few people working. Taking the lonely road has been of great benefit. Today, this subject has become a main stream subject and I am considered to be one of the grandfathers of this area.

YP: If you had an opportunity to change one thing about our country, what would it be?

C N R Rao : There are many things that we have to change in the country but the most important of all according to me is that our society should change its value system where it respects scholarship and education more than other things. Education and science do not figure in the value system of our society today.

YP: What is your plan for the future?

C N R Rao : My plan for the future is to continue to work in science as long as I can, if possible till the last day. This is the only prayer I have.

YP: How much time do you devote yourself?

C N R Rao : I spend many hours working in the laboratory and thinking about my work. One thing about one’s passion in science is that even though one is not actually working or writing at a given time, the undercurrent is always related to something one is interested in. I even now keep coining sentences and phrases in my dreams for a paper that I would be writing.
