Melting and Alloying Process

First step of making Silver Box Ring Channel Setting is melting and alloying process. Get the exact measurement (use gram scale) of mixing silver and copper to make 925 sterling Silver (92.5% of the element is silver, 7.5% of it is copper). Use torch to melt the element together (use ceramic bowl as a container and use flux to separate dirt when melting the element) after that, use tongs to grip the ceramic bowl and pour the melting 925 sterling silver into ingot mould to convert the melting alloy metal into bar. Equipments: Gram scale, torch (big one), tongs, koi, ingot mould and flux

Drill centre ‘side plate’ for piercing process to make hole at the middle.

Rolling, Flattening, Design Process

Equipments: Rolling mill, venire caliper, plastic mallet, dividers and horn anvil.By using rolling mills, roll the 925 sterling silver bar to get the right thickness, width and long. Always use the caliper to check the dimension. Anneal the 925 silver sheet followed by flatten the metal work (use plastic mallet and horn anvil). After through this process, draw the design on 925 sterling silver sheet by using dividers and scribers (as shown below). Then go on the next process.

Cutting Process

Equipments: Piercing saw, wax. There are three partitions of silver box ring channel setting before soldering. After rolling process, we have to cut the alloy into three parts (2 parts for side plate, 1 part for middle ring). See diagram 2. To prevent break, always put wax on piercing blade. Use right technique when piercing which is hold piercing saw vertically when cutting.

Bending, Forming and Soldering Process

Equipment: Torch, flux, acid pickle, silver solder, needle files, ring mandrel, round-nose pliers. Before soldering, middle ring has to be bend first. Filing the two edges of the middle ring bar to remove at least 20 degree to make perfect joint (see diagram below). Then by using ring mandrel, bend the middle ring and make sure the two edges joint well. Then solder the middle ring by using silver solder. Next, form it with ring mandrel and plastic mallet to make perfect round-shape.

Finishing Process

Equipments: Acid pickle, emery paper (various sizes), needle files.

Next step is finishing, due to varnish the scratch, deep scratch, dirt and rough surface. Firstly, soak the metal-work into an acid pickle to eliminate dirt that produce from the previous process. Then use needle files to make a fine-shape of ring followed by using different sizes of emery papers to smooth the metal-work surface (start from size 300 goes to 1200).

Stone Setting Process (Channel)

Equipments: Flexible shaft and hart bur, dividers.First of all, mark line by using the dividers at the inside channel walls. Use flexible shaft and hart bur to cut the line (see diagram below). Be careful and use low speed when cut the channel walls due to prevent over-cut. Then set the stone carefully.

Polishing Process

Equipments: Polishing cloth, rough.

The final touch to make a beautiful metal-art is polishing. Use rough to get the superior shine effect on ring. Rub rough on polishing cloth then polish the ring until achieve the mirror-effect and then product is ready to present.
