Spiritual discipline of
Silence
![Page 3: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
God invites us to listen to Him.
![Page 4: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
But
Only the silent hear
andthose who are not
silentdo not hear.
![Page 5: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
During a very difficult time in Israel’s
history, God sought out Elijah, a
discouraged prophet, to teach him
something new.
![Page 6: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about
to pass by.”
Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountain apart and
shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not not in the
wind.
![Page 7: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was notnot
in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the
Lord was notnot in the fire.
And after the fire came a sound of a sound of sheer silencesheer silence … 1 Kings 19:11-13
![Page 8: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
And the Lord God was in the silence.
![Page 9: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Scholars struggled how to explain that God spoke
in the “sound of sheer sound of sheer silencesilence” so they
translated the Hebrew phrase as a “still small
voice,” or a “gentle whisper.”
![Page 10: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
But there was only silence.
And in that silence Elijah met God.
![Page 11: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
So will we.
![Page 12: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
You may be wondering why these slides are
moving so slowly.
![Page 13: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
It’s going to be okay.
Take a deep breath.
![Page 14: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
So Scripture teaches us:
God is not only in the wind.
God is not only in the earthquake
God is not only in the fire.
![Page 15: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
He is also in the “sound of sheer
silence.”
![Page 16: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Silence is actually a mode of activity – not just a refraining from speaking or undue noise,
but a special form of attentiveness to God.

Silence is where God dwells …
but …
We are surrounded by noise.
![Page 20: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)

The experience of silence is now so rare we must guard and
treasure it …
![Page 24: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
Jesus knew the importance of silence.
![Page 25: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Very early in the morning, while it was still
dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he
prayed. Mark 1:35
![Page 26: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
Hear these words from Jesus for you:
“Come with me … to a quiet place and get
some rest.” Mark 6:31
![Page 27: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
In just a moment, we will try silence without
words.
For 1 minute
![Page 28: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
We will begin and end our 1 minute with a
chime.
![Page 29: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
Ready?
Let God embrace you with His love during
this time.
Close your eyes and let’s begin.

Welcome back
![Page 32: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
In silence God has many wonderful gifts
for us …
![Page 33: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
Silence centers us.
![Page 34: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
Silence brings us back to the basics, to our senses, to ourselves.
![Page 35: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
Silence makes us attentive to the world
around us …
![Page 36: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
Silence allows us to “taste and see” …
![Page 37: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)
There is so much to see … to savour … to
experience … to delight in …
![Page 38: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)
Take in these next images …

Ask yourself a few questions.
Ready?
![Page 44: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/44.jpg)
If silence is difficult for you, why do you think
that is?
![Page 45: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/45.jpg)
What are the noises in your life that need to be quieted so you can hear God speaking?
![Page 46: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/46.jpg)
What calls out to you from these words?
“Silence is the discipline by which the
inner fire of God is tended and kept
alive.” Henri Nouwen
![Page 47: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/47.jpg)
Learning silence is so important that in the 4th century Agatho, a
Christian abbot, carried a stone in his mouth for three years until he learned to be
silent.
![Page 48: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/48.jpg)
How many stones might you need to
carry in your mouth to be silent and listen?
![Page 49: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/49.jpg)
“When you are on your beds, search your hearts and be silent.”
Psalm 4:4
![Page 50: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/50.jpg)
Do not be rash with your mouth, And let not your
heart utter anything hastily before God.
For God is in heaven, and you on earth; Therefore let your words be few.
Eclessiasters 5:2
![Page 51: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/51.jpg)
Let’s now try silence without words once
again.
Only this time let’s do it for 3 minutes.
![Page 52: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/52.jpg)
We will begin and end our three minutes with
a chime.
![Page 53: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/53.jpg)
Ready?
Take a deep breath, relax and you might
want to ask:
“God how do you want to come to me in these 3 minutes of silence?”
![Page 54: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/54.jpg)
Close your eyes and let’s begin.
![Page 55: Silent sermon](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052214/554d78dcb4c90567188b4884/html5/thumbnails/55.jpg)

Welcome back

The Lord is in holy temple; let all the
earth be silent before him.
(That includes us)
Habbakuk 2:20

Is it possible that you have been searching for
God in the wind, the earthquake, and the fire,
and
He is waiting to be with you in the “sound of
sheer silence?”
