The Beauty, champion 2-year-old filly She Be Wild, and multiple Chilean champion Amani.

American Pharoah's first book also included 54 graded stakes-producing mares, of which 33 have already produced a grade I winner.

"It would be an exceptional book of mares for a proven stallion but for a horse to have the support of so many top breeders and quality mares in his first year is very unusual," said Dermot Ryan, manager at Ashford Stud, which acquired the stallion’s breeding rights in May 2015 following his victory in the Preakness Stakes (gr. I). "So many breeders wanted to secure their own part of history when the opportunity presented itself. For those breeders that want to operate at the top end he’s a horse that you simply can’t ignore."

As compared with other first-year sires, American Pharoah’s book quality is the most robust seen since classic winner Bernardini entered stud at Darley in 2007. The mares bred to American Pharoah have a collective Comparable Index (CI) of 4.92 and an overall Class Performance Index (CPI) of 7.26. The CI is an index similar to the Average Earnings Index (AEI) but indicates the quality of the mares as producers. The CPI indicates how talented the mares were as racehorses. Bernardini’s first book had a 5.68 CI and an 11.16 CPI.

As for the number of mares bred, American Pharoah has the fourth-largest book for a first-year stallion since 2000. The only sires to have been bred to more mares during their first seasons are Lion Heart (233) and Chapel Royal (222) both in 2005, and this year’s leading second-crop sire Uncle Mo, who bred 211 mares in 2012. All three stallions entered stud at Ashford.

Ryan said the transition to a stud career had been easy for American Pharoah, aided by his unusually laid-back temperament.

"He’s a very relaxed horse and always accepting of new situations, so his transition from racehorse to stallion went very smoothly," Ryan said. "Physically he has also thrived and has let down into a magnificent stallion—all quality. We can’t wait to see his first crop of foals next year. The quality of mare bred to him gives him every opportunity to be a success at stud." BH

LONG-STRIDING ARROGATE POWERS THROUGH DRILLBy Alicia Wincze-Hughest @BH_AHughes

Juddmonte Farms' Arrogate, record-setting winner of the Aug. 27 Travers Stakes (gr. I), put in anoth-

er steady move at Santa Anita Park in advance of his expected start in the $6 million Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I), working seven furlongs in 1:24 2/5 Oct. 18 with graded stakes-winning stablemate Mor Spirit.

With jockey Rafael Bejarano in the irons, Arrogate broke off well behind his workmate and was still loping along a handful of lengths back as the duo came into the stretch. The long stride that carried the gray son of Unbridled's Song to his 13 1/2-length Travers score proceeded to kick in with gusto, as he finished up just ahead of Mor Spirit and continued on with a big gallop out.

"He's a horse that gets stronger with another horse," said trainer Bob Baffert, who worked Arrogate seven furlongs for the second straight week. "I just wanted to put two put longer works into him where he gallops out a mile. He's pretty fit, he's a just a big, long-jumping horse, but he looks great."

Mor Spirit, unraced since finishing 10th in this year's Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), was

credited with an official time of 1:24 3/5.The way Arrogate ran his foes off their feet in gate-

to-wire fashion in the Travers was a surprise to Baffert in terms of its execution. The upstart colt hasn't been one to flaunt his speed in the morning, but the freakish ability he unleashed that day was something he has teased in his three prior victories.

"He's the kind of a horse who never shows any speed in that morning. That's why his Travers, the speed he showed that day, we had never seen that," the Hall of Fame trainer said. "We're just keep him relaxed and calmed down. We don't want him getting speed crazy or anything like that. We hope he runs that race back, he'll have to run that race back if he's going to beat (champion California Chrome)."

With California Chrome tearing through the handicap ranks this season and several other top 3-year-old runners either retired (Exaggerator, Creator) or coming into the Classic off lackluster efforts (Nyquist), Arrogate has been tabbed as one of the only obstacles that could potentially derail the 2014 Horse of the Year. Unraced as a juvenile, he has been a wunderkind since breaking his maiden second time out June 5 as the Travers marked his first try against stakes company.

"He'll have to step it up. They all have to step it up because Chrome right now looks unbeatable," said Baffert, who added Arrogate is expected to have two

more works in his Breeders' Cup preparation. "But he looks good, and he's healthy. That's all we can ask for."

Bred by Clearsky Farms and out of the Distorted Humor mare Bubbler, Arrogate has won four of five career starts with $784,600 in earnings. He was purchased by Juddmonte for $560,000 at the 2014 Keeneland September yearling sale. BH

DISCREET CAT TO STAND IN JAPANBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Darley's grade I winner Discreet Cat, the sire of 11 grad-ed stakes winners worldwide, will stand at the farm's

operation in Japan for the 2017 breeding season accord-ing to an Oct. 18 release.

A son of Forestry, Discreet Cat retired to stud at Darley America in Central Kentucky in 2008. To date he's sired 22 black-type stakes winners and an additional 18 that have placed in black-type stakes. His progeny include three grade I winners: Vincent Scuderi's homebred Dads Caps, a two-time winner of the Carter Handicap in 2014 and 2015 for trainer Rudy Rodriguez; Moyglare Stud Farm's Discreet Marq, winner of the Del Mar Oaks for Christophe Clement; and Westrock Stables' Secret Compass, who won the 2013 Chandelier Stakes for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert.

A 2017 stud fee has yet to be announced. Discreet Cat stood for $7,500 in 2016.

"We are excited to be standing Discreet Cat in Japan," said Harry Sweeney, Darley's president in Japan. "We think his progeny will be well-suited to Japanese races and he already has some very promising runners in Japan, including grade III Negishi Stakes winner Air Khalifa and proven open class performer Qismah. His sire, Forestry, is by Storm Cat and will be an interesting mating for Sunday Silence-line mares. We look forward

to showing him to breeders in the coming weeks."Discreet Cat won his sole start at 2 for breeder E.

Paul Robsham Stables, and returned the following year under Godolphin blue to run undefeated in five starts. He won his 3-year-old debut for Saeed bin Surror and took the S & M Al Naboodah Group UAE Derby (UAE-II) by six lengths, defeating eventual 2006 Horse of the Year Invasor.

Returning to his native America, the flashy bay won his next start in an allowance race at Saratoga Race Course by 11 lengths before stepping back up to graded company in the Jerome Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. II), which he took by 10 1/4 lengths. He finished the year with a 3 1/4-length victory in the Hill 'n' Dale Cigar Mile (gr. I). His final time of 1:32.46 fell a hair short of Easy Goer's track record of 1:32.40.

Discreet Cat was bred in Kentucky out of Robsham's grade I-winning Private Account mare Pretty Discreet, a homebred who also produced grade I stakes winner Discreetly Mine—now standing at Haras La Cala in Uruguay—grade III stakes-placed Discreet Treasure, and stakes winner Pretty Wild. BH

KEEP CONFERENCE CELEBRATES PROGRESSBy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

In its first industry conference Oct. 18 in Lexington, the Kentucky Equine Education Project celebrated impor-

tant progress the group helped make a reality while continuing to emphasize the importance of all breeds working together to benefit the state's horse industry.

"I think people are seeing that unity is how we move things forward," said KEEP executive director Joe Clabes, adding that KEEP can build on a lot of the ideas discussed at the conference conducted Oct. 17-18. Clabes said the group plans to find dates to meet again next year and encouraged participants to submit ideas for new topics or suggestions for improving the conference next year.

Unity proved to be a theme Tuesday for the group that represents all horse breeds in the state, Thoroughbreds of course being of great importance and fueling much of the research and infrastructure that benefits all breeds.

"There's tremendous investment in infrastructure here," said Dr. Stuart Brown, a veterinarian with Hagyard Equine Medical Institute and a Kentucky Horse Racing Commissioner, during a panel on where Kentucky's industry stands. "We have some of the great resources: feed, blacksmiths, farriers, veterinariy diagnostic labs, veterinary medicine and research.

"There are 220 to 250 actively practicing equine vets in the Central Kentucky region. As I tell young people who want to practice in this area, it has to be done at an elite level because everything else here is done at that level."

Chauncey Morris, executive director of the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association and Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders, said that infrastructure is one reason breeding in the state has been on the upswing since the Great Recession while other state

programs have struggled to rebound."Kentucky breeding has been starting to recover.

Other states have not returned to the levels they saw before the recession," Morris said. "I have two young daughters, so I'm an optimist. I like to say we're in a recovery."

Morris said increased money to the Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund has helped fuel the rebound as well as the infrastructure that has always been here with veterinary facilities like Hagyard Equine Medical Institute and Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital.

The addition of historical racing is one of the efforts KEEP has championed. The games, basing payouts on a pari-mutuel formula and winning results on previously run horse races, have been added at Kentucky Downs, Ellis Park, and the Red Mile—in a joint venture with Keeneland. Turfway Park is planning to add historical racing as well, but has not announced a launch date.

Historical racing is closing in on $2 billion in handle, and to date has generated $22 million for the industry. In 2006 KEEP helped push through tax reform in the state that each year has moved about $10 million to $12 million from the general fund back to the industry.

During the conference, KEEP Industry Vision Awards were handed out to Brereton Jones, the former KEEP chairman and owner of Airdrie Stud, and Old Friends Thoroughbred retirement farm. BH

KEEP CONFERENCE: FACILITATE HORSE ENCOUNTERSBy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

With the continued urbanization of the United States, speakers at the first Kentucky Equine

Education Project industry conference Oct. 18 in Lex-ington said it's more important than ever for industry participants to reach out to the general public to help facilitate a connection to horses.

"We sometimes forget that while we get to see horses every day, the vast majority of the world does not," said Price Bell of Mill Ridge Farm and Nicoma Bloodstock. "They want to see how horses live, how they are cared for each day."

Bell, who participated on a panel discussing growth opportunities for the industry at the two-day conference, is the board president of Horse Country Inc., a not-for-profit organization that provides tours of Central Kentucky Thoroughbred farms.

KEEP works to promote horse industry awareness in Kentucky.

Bell noted that the original economic engine for horse racing, pari-mutuel wagering, faces more and more competition. He said it's important for the industry to create new experiences for customers. He said the thing that makes racing unique compared with other gaming is the horse, and providing access to horses at tracks and farms can create unique experiences that will create new fans.

"Our consumer has changed a lot in my lifetime. Now that you can bet on anything, people want an experience. They want to touch a horse, they want a nice place to go for the races," Bell said. "The horse is the differentiator... Demands of the horse racing consumer have dramatically changed from a sort of betting commodity to an experience. We need to drive more experience-based exposure to the horse for people."

Bell said it's hugely important to fans that the horse is treated well during its racing career and will be treated well after it's retired. Bell said bringing people into contact with horses and allowing them to see first-

hand how well they are treated can help when animal rights groups assail the sport.

"I believe in promoting transparency and promoting horses. The more you bring people into your barns, it helps affect the conversation," Bell said. "Through social media, initiatives like Horse Country that celebrate the horse, its care, and its love; it can help change the conversation."

Kentucky commissioner of agriculture Ryan Quarles, also participating on the panel, said strides have been made in educating legislators about the breeding industry. He said more of them understand that the backbone of the industry are family-owned farms. But he encouraged farm owners to continue to reach out to lawmakers and invite them to see the operations first-hand.

Quarles, a Republican who was elected in November 2015, said he is committed to working with the equine industry.

"Over the years Agriculture has had a limited relationship with the equine industry," Quarles said. "I want to change that. I believe we need a more active role. You are going to have to educate me and the Department of Agriculture, because of that limited previous interaction." BH

4-year-old son of Dubawi earned the top Equibase Speed Figure of the week at 123 as he completed 1 1/2 miles in 2:30.87 in a race that dominated the week's top speed figures.

"We won a group I in France at 3-years-old but it was a difficult start to this year," Pasquier said after Erupt snapped a seven-race skid dating to last year's Grand Prix de Paris. "Today he came back very easily and I'm very happy to have found my horse again."

After a slow early pace, the Niarchos family homebred made up 1 1/2 lengths in a final quarter-mile run in :22.86. In a Facebook post, Graffard credited his team, the owner, and the runner, noting Erupt is a special horse.

Regular rider Stephen Pasquier said the horse he guided to a one-length victory Sunday felt like the same runner who capped a three-race win streak last year with a victory in the Juddmonte Grand Prix de Paris (Fr-I) at Longchamp. With Sunday's effort, the

MOTION BACK FOR MORE IN SYCAMORE, VALLEY VIEWBy Alicia Wincze-Hughest @horseracinghl

Trainer Graham Motion is starting to get a little greedy.

Off the 12 graded stakes that have been contested during the Keeneland fall meet, three winners have been saddled by the man who operates Herringswell Stables. In the interest of keeping that momentum traveling at full speed, Motion is bringing a pair of entries apiece to the Oct. 20 $100,000 Sycamore Stakes (gr. IIIT) and Oct. 21 $150,000 Pin Oak Valley View Stakes (gr. IIIT).

The tone for the Motion barn was set opening day when Dancing Rags captured the Darley Alcibiades Stakes (gr. I) Oct. 7. Victories by stablemates Miss Temple City in the Shadwell Turf Mile (gr. IT) and Miss Ella in the Buffalo Trace Franklin County Stakes (gr. IIIT)

followed, and Motion brings another solid hand heading into a pair of stakes he already has some great history in.

Motion has won the last two editions of the 1 1/2-miles Sycamore Stakes with Holiday Star and has Sam-Son Farm's Canadian champion, Up With the Birds, among his two entrants this year. Previously trained by Malcolm Pierce, Up With the Birds is making his first start under Motion's care and heads into the Sycamore off a third-place finish in the Durham Cup Stakes (Can-III) at Woodbine Sept. 24.

The 6-year-old son of Stormy Atlantic has won one of six starts this season with his lone victory coming when he captured the Nijinsky Stakes (Can-IIT) at Woodbine July 24. Up With the Birds will break from post No. 5 in the 14-horse field and will be joined in the gate by stablemate Street Fashion.

Count the 1 1/16-mile Valley View as another spot Motion has recent mastery over, having won the race last October with Dixiana Farms' Tiger Ride.

He brings My Meadowview Farm's Tin Type Gal into the latest edition of the test off a third-place run in the Sands Point Stakes (gr. IIT) Sept. 17 in what was the seventh career start for the 3-year-old daughter of Tapit. Tin Type Gal won the Boiling Springs Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Monmouth Park July 24 and was fifth in the Del Mar Oaks Presented by The Jockey Club (gr. IT) Aug. 20.

While Tin Type Gal has been relatively lightly raced, she is the veteran member of the Motion entry in comparision to stablemate Quidura(GB). The Gestut Faerhof homebred is set to make her second North American start and fourth career outing, having won an allowance race going one mile on the turf at Belmont Park Sept. 18.

Among those aiming to disrupt the recent streak of success for the Motion barn is Shug McGaughey trained My Impression. Stuart S. Janney III's homebred daughter of Sky Mesa has won three of five starts this year with her two defeats coming when she finished behind Time and Motion, winner of Saturday's Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Presented by Lane's End (gr. IT). BH

compared with the same session a year ago, the sales company reported 170 head sold for €12,055,000 ($13,244,000), versus €8,286,500 for 134 sold on Day 1 in 2015. The average of €70,912 ($77,900) represented a gain of 14.7% and the median rose from €45,000 to €50,000 ($55,000).

This year's session turnover rate was 82.5%, compared with 76.2% in 2015.

The first session topper to go through the ring was a colt by Lawman (Hip 148) out of the German listed stakes winner Sworn Sold. He was bred by Sven and Carina Hanson's Fair Salinia and offered by the Coulonces consignment; the Hong Kong Jockey Club's Mark Richards signed the ticket.

"He is extremely athletic and has a beautiful walk, there is just nothing to dislike about him," Richards said.

The other top-priced colt was bought by Nicolas de Watrigant on behalf of Al Shaqab Racing, which bought six yearlings via Watrigant for €1,050,000 ($1,153,560). Hip 180, consigned by Haras des Capucines, is a Dansili half brother to the multiple grade I-winning mare Zagora. BH

ARELLA ROCKSTAR'S PEDIGREE PACKS A PUNCHt @pedigreeconsult

Two of the less likely breed-shapers of the second half of the 20th century, were Rough'n Tumble and

Aspidistra, who made their names in the emerging Flor-ida Thoroughbred industry of the late 1950s and early 1960s. Rough'n Tumble arrived in 1958, Joe O'Farrell bringing him to stand at Ocala Stud when he made the move from Maryland, where Rough'n Tumble had initially stood.

A son of Free for All from a sire line that had been in the U.S. since the 1850s, Rough'n Tumble took the Santa Anita Derby at 3, but was injured soon afterward. Attempts at a comeback failed, and Rough'n Tumble retired to stud at the age of 6, his most prestigious victory a dimming memory.

Aspidistra, a minor winner by Better Self (from a different branch—Domino—of the same Himyar line as Rough'n Tumble), was claimed for $6,500 as a birthday present by the office staff of William McKnight, then president of the 3M Corporation, and owner of Tartan Farm.

The union of Rough'n Tumble and Aspidistra produced Dr. Fager, one of the all-time greats of American racing. Rough'n Tumble's other offspring included champion 2-year-old filly My Dear Girl—the dam of In Reality and Minnesota Mac—whose son Great Above sired Holy Bull. Aspidistra also produced two-time champion sprinter Ta Wee (by In Reality's sire,

Intentionally), and founded a still-thriving family, whose most recent star is Liam's Map.

Although he died young and didn't leave a top-class stallion son, Dr. Fager had a major impact as broodmare sire of Fappiano. With the success of Fappiano and In Reality at stud, doubling Rough'n Tumble—often with the female lines of Fappiano or Dr. Fager also involved—soon became an extremely successful formula. Early examples include three sons of Fappiano: Quiet American, inbred 3x2 to Dr. Fager, and 4x3 to Fappiano's third dam, Cequillo; and Unbridled and Rubiano, born a year later, both with second dams by In Reality. Unbridled also had Aspidistra as his fourth dam. Unbridled and Quiet American went on to take the formula a step further, siring classic winners, Empire Maker and Real Quiet, out of mares by sons of In Reality.

Given the success of Unbridled as a sire of sires, and since Unbridled, Rubiano, and Quiet American appear respectively as the broodmare sires of Tapit, War Front, and Bernardini, it's no surprise that nearly 60 years after they began their stud careers we're now beginning to see major winners with multiple strains of Rough'n Tumble and Aspidistra accumulated through related individuals.

The most recent example is Arella Rockstar, who at the weekend became the second black-type scorer for freshman sire Astrology (by A.P. Indy out of a Quiet American mare), with a victory in the Oct. 16 Matron Stakes (gr. III) at Belmont Park. Arella Rockstar's dam is by Old Fashioned, a son of Unbridled's Song bred on the same Fappiano/Hold Your Peace cross as the dam of Astrology, giving her Fappiano through Quiet American and Unbridled. In addtion, Arella Rockstar's second dam is by Really Secret, a son of In Reality, out of a mare by the Dr. Fager horse Dr. Blum. So Arella Rockstar has two crosses of Fappiano, two of In Reality, three of Cequillo, four of Dr. Fager, five of Aspidistra, and six of Rough'n Tumble, all focused through just three individuals. BH
