Introducing Spanish Syllable Head or Tail Spanish Syllable Head or Tail provides a fun setting for students to practice matching beginning and ending syllable sounds to letters. Emergent readers use colorful Head or Tail Game Mats to work with 1 of 15 target syllables to determine whether the target syllable sounds are at the beginning or ending of a pictured word. The 120 Picture Cards include 4 pictures each of 15 syllables in both their beginning and ending position. For example, there are eight pictures for the syllable “ma”, four of which occur at the beginning of the word, as in “mano,” and four of which occur at the end of the word, as in “cama.” This activity can be individualized to give students specific target syllables to practice. Model the Activity Begin by modeling the activity, discussing every step with students. Place a Head or Tail Game Mat in front of you. Take a Syllable Card, place it in the middle section of the fish and read it, for example, “ma.” Lay the Picture Cards face up in a stack off the mat. Take the top Picture Card, name it, and decide if the target syllable is at the beginning or ending of the word. Show students how to place the Picture Card in the appropriate column if there is a match—if the target syllable is at the beginning of the pictured word, place the Picture Card under the head of the fish; if the target syllable is at the end of the word, place it under the tail of the fish. Continue to play until you have gone through all the Picture Cards. Show students how to check their work by turning over the cards and noting whether the beginning or ending syllable is underlined. Center Task Card Post this at the literacy center in a visible position. The student or helper can refer to the Center Task Card for instructions. Refer to the shaded section at the top for center preparation, including needed materials. Spanish Head or Tail Reproducible To monitor student progress and extend the activity, have students complete the Spanish Head or Tail Reproducible. Students look at the target syllable and then listen for its position in each of the pictured words. Similar to the Head or Tail Game Mat, if the target syllable occurs at the beginning position of the word, they fill in the circle under the head of the fish; if it occurs at the ending position of the word, they fill in the circle under the tail of the fish.
