4.3 ROHINGYAUNHCRproject

SIKL vide introduction by SIJB on involvement with UNHCR project had meeting on 24th April 2015 with UNHCR to discuss on identifying the project to support the Rohinya refugees in the Klang Valley. Briefly the points of discussion:

i) Total Rohingya registered by UNHCR in Malaysia is 47,000. They have no access to schools, do not have the right to work and UNHCR only provide protection in a form of Refugee Identification Card; ii) They are located in Cheras, Ampang, Sentul, Selayang and Klang; iii) They need to be developed, ie skill training or character building of the Women and young (teenage), estimated number of 20 women.

Some of the skill training that they require: i) Basic concern - communication, vocabulary etc be it English or Malay - SIKL needs to

establish programme to begin with; ii) Project identification - eg basic baking so that they can develop the skills and later

move on to doing small business to be sub-supplier - basic home economics to be taught.

SIKL needs the following: 1) to visit the proposed location and establish what is needed to be provided in terms of space and equipment/utensils etc; 2) to discuss on safety and hygiene to ensure sustainability of the project; and 3) to work with SIKL and Soroptimist members /experts in areas of communication and appropriate skills.

With respect to the funding of the Project, it is informed that the project will be funded at RM1,200 per Refugee for a max number of twenty (20) women with an estimated total of RM24,000 which include purchase of equipment (stoves or oven) baking and/or cooking utensils, supplies (raw materials etc), All expenditure will be monitored and presented during the regular project update meeting. Awaiting for confirmation from UNHCR as they are pretty tied up with the current issues. However, the project was aborted as UNHCR had changed the approach to handle the matter with the ROHINGYA community.
