    Globalchallenges Futuregrowth

Sustainable development responds to trends that willshape our uture. These so-called megatrends also os-

    ter uture economic growth.

The key to uture success will lie in the development o

intelligent solutions to these challen ges. We at Sika have

already begun to develop and implement these solutions

    with our clients.

    Challenge #1:

The demand or limited resources is increasing.

Worldwide the demand or resources like oil, coal, natural gas, water, iron ore or copper is increasing, drivenby a growing population and higher spending power. On the other hand, these resources are limited or their

extraction is getting more and more costly. Ecient and intelligent use o these resources is one o the main

    challenges or uture growth.

    Page 08

    Challenge #2:

The climate is changing aster than ever beore.

The earths climate is changing aster than ever beore. The consequences are ma niold and aect us all. Climate

protection is one o the most important tasks or the uture. By 2050 the world will have to reduce its greenhouse

gas emissions by 80%. To act now is crucial, because a complete overhaul o currently used energy systems needs

to be nanced and realized within less than two generations. Decisive action is needed urgently.

    Page 18

    Challenge #3:

Water is in increasingly short supply.Fresh water is the oil o the 21st century. With the world population continui ng to grow, clean water is becoming

a scarce commodity. Already today one billion people lack a sucient supply o drinking water. In the uture,

water will have to be used more eciently and inrastructure or supply and treatment o water will have to

    be renewed.

    Page 28

    Challenge #4:

The need or ecient inrastructure is rising.

Worldwide, projects or construction and maintenance o inrastructure require substantial nancial resources.

Especially the rapid rise o emerging economies calls or huge investments in inrastructure projects. With thegrowth o urban population, ecient and environmentally low-impact transportation inrastructure will be a

necessity or a prosperous and sustainable uture.

    Opportunity

World demand or resources such as crude oil, coal, natural gas, coal, water and ore is rising continu-

ously. Since 1964 ewer new oil discoveries have been made each year. Production in the United States

peaked in the 1970s. Global production is estimated to reach its maximum level at around 100 million

barrels per day. Peak oil, the point in time when the maximum rate o global petroleum extraction is

reached, is expected in 2020. Ater that date the world oil production is going to decline, at rst slowly,

    then more and more rapidly.

Production levels cannot cope with the demand. There are still vast reserves o most resources to explore, but theyare becoming more and more expensive to mine and unearth. Saving ossil uels and raw materials is more than

resource and climate preservation, it has become a social necessity.

On the other hand, rising energy and raw material prices have propelled investment in resource eciency and re-newable energy technologies like wind and solar power. Innovative solutions that dramatically improve energy and

material eciency are the competitive edge o the uture.

Many resources are limited. The only innite resourceis peoples creativity to ndsolutions to this limitation.

    Solutionsto improve energy- and resource-eciency

Saving resources and reducing wastein concrete production

Concrete is one o the most versatile and durable constructionmaterials known to man, making it the most widely used construc-tion material in the world. It is ubiquitous in our built environment, being used in schools, hospitals, homes, oces, roads, railways, dams etc. Given the high demand or concrete, its sustainable pro-duction and application is an issue o increasing importance orthe construction industry and regulators worldwide. Old concrete isbeing recycled more oten. It is crushed and used as a road build-ing material or as a mineral aggregate or producing new concrete.Material eciency is urther improved by the on-site recycling oexcavated material. The environmental benets are obvious:

Re-using existing materials reduces extraction o newaggregate materials and

The pollution caused by transporting waste to landll

    sites is reduced.

    > Sika Solution:Admixtures or quality concrete made

    with recycled aggregates

Recycling preserves natural resources o gravel and sand andreduces demolition waste that otherwise would be disposed o inlandlls. Recycled aggregates are permitted in a wide range o con-struction applications, but must comply with the requirements othe relevant specication. Sika admixtures allow the use o recycledconcrete as an aggregate in concrete production, so that concreteo good quality and workability can be produced.

    > Sika Solution:Admixtures or on-site recycling o excavated material

An exemplary implementation o on-site recycling was realizedduring the construction o the new Letzigrund Stadium in Zurich.

The big challenge was the production o concrete with a constantquality using aggregates produced rom material excavated on theconstruction site. This was only possible with a continuous adjust-ment o the concrete ormulation and Sikas admixture know-how.In addition to saving extraction o raw materials, more than 6,000truck runs were avoided because ewer transports were necessary.

    Crushing stones asterusing less energy

Cement production consumes a lot o energy and accounts orabout 5% o global CO2 emissions. The global cement industrythereore has a strong interest in solutions that help improve energyeciency and reduce CO2 emissions.

The use o chemical processing agents in the manuacture ocement can add substantially to sustainable solutions. Since everytype o cement has its own characteristics and the challenges ocement manuacturing vary according to local conditions, everysingle cement plant needs to be handled individually. Thereore,Sika oers a range o basic technologies a nd tailor-made solutions, always with the target to assist producers in creating sustainableand protable solutions.

    > Sika Solution:Grinding aids or energy-ecient cement production

Sika grinding aids and perormance enhancers represent creativesolutions developed to improve the production eciency o cementgrinding plants. In addition, these products improve the granulom-etry as well as powder fowability o the nished cement. A typicaldosage o grinding aid increases the throughput o the cement millby over 10% while simultaneously reducing the relative power con-sumption per ton o ground cement by about 10%.

    Our engagement

    Recycling pioneer

Sika is among the pioneers in recycling used roong membranes. As a member o a consortium o leading companies, Sika partici-pates in the post-consumer roo recycling program ROOFCOLLECT,the European collecting and recycling initiative or end-o-lie recy-cling o roong and waterproong membranes.

The recycling process starts with the removal o old membranesrom the building. The collected material is then packaged andshipped to a acility or processing so that it can be reintroducedinto the manuacturing o new products. The partners in this pro-gram have committed themselves to recycling increasing quantitieso PVC membranes.

Proper sealing and bonding oinsulating glass and windows

Worldwide, the increasing demand or energy eciency infuencesthe development o aades and windows. Modern internationalmarket requirements or greater transparency and higher unc-tionality demand innovative and economically convincing solutions.Insulating glass units are the heart o ever y aade and window. Forlong service lie they need proper sealants that are compatible withall other components with which they come in contact.

    > Sika Solution:Special sealant or argon-lled insulating glass

Argon gas is used to reduce heat loss in double glazing sealed unitsby slowing down convection inside the air space. With an argon-lled unit the heat transer coecient (U-value) o insulating glasscan be reduced by about 0.3 W/(m2K) compared to an air-lledunit. This means energy savings on every square meter o glass.

Sika has developed a highly UV-resistant, high-modulus second-ary silicone sealant or argon-lled insulating glass, which reducesargon gas losses to a minimum. Thus up to 20% energy savings areachievable during the whole service lie o the aade. This attractsthe attention not only o the glass industry but also o investorsand architects.

    > Sika Solution:Bonding technology or energy-ecient

    and lighter windows

Advancements in window prole technology over the past ew yearshave created windows with better insulation. But with the windowbonding technology rom Sika, new window designs become ea-sible or an even better energy perormance. This technology allowsthe omission o steel reinorcements in plastic windows, enablinga thinner rame design. Besides an improved material eciencyand a brighter room ambience, up to 20% energy savings can beachieved this way.

The right product or the job, thats Sikas approach to bonding andsealing. Instead o a one sealant ts all solution, Sika provides a

systematic approach to determine the best solution or every con-struction element.

With the window bonding technology romSika, new window designs become easibleor an even better energy perormance.

    Opportunity

Over the past 500,000 years, the world has seen our ice ages. Much o North America, Europe and Asia

were covered by glaciers. The warm periods in between shaped coastlines dramatically as sea levels

rose. Yet throughout these periods, the atmospheric concentration o carbon dioxide (CO2) stayed well

below 300 parts per million (ppm). In 2008 that concentration passed 384 ppm. Atmospheric carbon

dioxide level now stands more than a third above the pre-industrial level. Hal o the increase has

occurred in the last 60 years. Humanity is at risk o creating a climate unlike any seen beore.

Fossil uels still drive the economy today. In the ace o climate change, building a low-carbon economy is the keychallenge o the uture. In a carbon-constrained world, economic survival and success depends on nding new

and innovative solutions or products and services which are dramatically more energy-ecient than what we use

today. Meeting the challenge will also require a complete restructuring o the global energy industry. We also need

to strengthen our eort to reduce the impact climate change will have on the world. Massive investments in low-carbon and renewable energy will be required.

During the next decades, generating sustainable energy will become one o the main challenges o our civilization

and propel the next stage o economic growth. New power systems are under development worldwide and Sika

    products and knowledge are contributing.

Protecting the climateis an investment in ouruture. The uture oour climate starts in

    peoples minds.

    Growth Factor Renewable Energies

In 2007 an estimated USD 71 billion was invested in new renewable power and heating capacity worldwide (excluding large hydro-power), o which 47% was or wind power and 30% or solar photovoltaics. At least 60 countries have some type o policy to promoterenewable power generation.

Renewable electricity generation capacity reached an estimat ed 240 gigawatts worldwide, an increase o 50% over 2004. Not takinglarge hydropower into account, renewables represent 5% o global power capacity. New renewable energy generated as much elec-tricity worldwide in 2006 as one-quarter o the worlds nuclear power plants. Wind power represents about 40% o global renewablepower capacity. In 2007 the capacity increased by 28%. The astest growing energy technology is grid-connected solar photovoltaics, with 50% annual increases in cumulative installed capacity in 2006 and 2007.

    Moving more with less CO2

A lighter car produces less CO2. Through the reduction o a carsweight by 100 kg, uel consumption can be reduced by about 0.3liters per 100 km. This corresponds to a reduction o 7g CO2/km.Sika supplies materials that are needed in bonding and reinorce-ment to design the vehicle o the uture to be even saer and moreeconomical.

    > Sika Solution:Structural adhesives

Modern car production is not imaginable without adhesives. Notonly the car body, but many exterior and interior components, visibleor hidden in a car, owe their unctionality to Sikas state-o-the-arttechnologies. The benets o structural adhesives are particularlyevident when dierent materials such as aluminum, magnesium, steel, or ber-reinorced plastics need to be connected to eachother. This would be impossible without adhesives. In addition, theoptimal integration o adhesives in the production process lowersproduction costs without compromising saety and comort.

    > Sika Solution:Reinorcers

The building o lighter cars in the ace o increasing saety and

comort standards is a crucial challenge or the automotive industry.Sikas patented lightweight materials or structural reinorcementare used to reduce vibration, enhance structural body rigidity andimprove crash behavior while reducing the overall weight o thebody shell.

As a globally operating company, Sika is a partner to its custom-ers worldwide. The company is represented by its own subsidiariesin all automobile-producing countries, thus guaranteeing ast andcompetent local service.

The Sun is a gigantic usion reactor which radiates energy intospace. The amount o energy our planet receives in one hour romthe Sun is o the same dimension as the world energy consump-tion in one year. This energy drives the water cycle, causes windsand provides light and heat. The use o these renewable sourceso energy is becoming crucial or uture energy and carbon reduc-tion strategies.

    > Sika Solution:Adhesives or the solar industry

Sika has extensive experience in bonding solutions or constructionand production processes and has successully transerred prod-uct and process know-how rom these areas to the solar industry. With Sika bonding technologies, new design options, reduced pro-cessing times and cost savings become easible. Sika adhesives

or solar solutions have an outstanding resistance to UV radiation, weathering and heat degradation. They maintain a very strong, yetfexible bond between parts over a wide range o temperature andclimatic exposures and thereore contribute to increased service lieo the solar panels.

    > Sika Solution:Solar roos

Sika has over 40 years o experience in the manuacture o singleply membranes that can be laminated together with solar cells orbuilding integrated photovoltaic systems. A roo system with aproven track record o high perormance and low maintenance is acritical component o solar systems that have an expected rootopservice lie o 25 years. In act, be it building integrated solar cells orrigid cells placed on the roo, a key component in the sustainabilityequation is a roo system that lasts as long as the solar system with as little maintenance and interruption as possible.

    > Sika Solution:Highly refective liquid and sheet roong membranes

Certain rootop solar systems absorb light not only rom the sun to

produce electricity but also rom the refective roo surace itsel in some cases increasing the eciency o the solar cell up to15%. Sikas highly refective liquid and sheet membranes make asignicant contribution to increased electricity production rom thesame area o roo space covered by solar modules.

Sika not only supplies manuacturers and constructors o photovol-taic and thermal solar systems with state-o-the-art solutions, butalso supports its customers with expert construction consultancy.

    Solutionsto reduce carbon dioxide emissions

Sika is where the wind blows

Since ancient times humankind has always used the natural andrenewable power o wind. Windmills were used to grind grain, sawtimber, and draw water or irrigation and general consumption. Theprinciple is the same today, though capacities have been vastlyincreased.

    > Sika Solution:Adhesives or the development o

    long-lasting wind turbines

The need to constantly reduce costs per kWh has led to everlarger turbines and ever higher eciency. Demands on adhesivesand sealants increased signicantly in the last 15 years, and Sikaconstantly adapted its technologies to continue providing productsmeeting the highest requirements. In addition, adhesives are usedto bond together concrete elements or the construction o wind

    turbine towers.

    > Sika Solution:Protection against the elements

As wind turbines are best positioned in exposed locations withplenty o wind available, they are also subject to a wide range ocorrosive attacks, rom salty or polluted atmosphere, high humid-ity, temperature shocks, and the UV radiation o the sun. Aroundthe world, Sika reliably protects wind turbines rom top to bot-tom on sea and land comprising blades, machine compartments, hubs and gear boxes, steel and concrete towers and oundations. With their high eciency, Sika systems guarantee economic anddurable protection or an energy orm with a clean history and apromising uture.

A strong oundation or wind energy

In the manuacturing process o concrete oundations or windturbines, Sika products are used rom the very beginning. High-quality concrete made with Sika admixtures is reliably protectedwith our concrete coating solutions against damaging attacks romwater, rost and weathering. Foundations or o-shore wind tur-bines demand special concrete design. To ensure the durability othe structure in the marine environment, resistance to corrosion, inltration o water and chemical deterioration is required. This isaddressed by design o concrete materials in combination with Sikaadmixture technology.

    Opportunity

Fresh water is the oil o the 21st century. Essential or healthy ecosystems and human survival itsel,

clean water is also becoming a scarce commodity. The scarcity grows in urgency in many regions as

population growth, climate change, pollution, lack o investment, and management ailures restrict

the amount o water available relative to demand. Already today one billion people lack a sucient

supply o drinking water. And the situation is projected to worsen rapidly.

Signs o scarcity are plentiul. Water tables are alling and rivers are drying out as groundwater is over-pumped

in many regions in the world. In deserts little water is available due to the climatic conditions, but in other regionsa lack o investment or poor management o water resources leads to water shortage even when enough water

is available. Another sign o scarcity is the rise o desalination plants, a very expensive water supply solution. It

is certain that we will be aected either directly or indirectly by tensions and dilemmas in the use o water over

    the next ew decades.

Scarcity usually encourages better management o resources. Consequently, the challenge to move to moresustainable water management practices is growing ast. At the same time, the worldwide water and sanitation

situation creates new opportunities or business to contribute with sustainable solutions through know-how, new

    technologies and innovative products.

A growing populationneeds more water ogood quality. Ecientstorage and transport

o water is neededto ensure supply inthe uture.

Since Kaspar Winkler ounded Sika in 1910 in Zurich, water management in the context o construction has been a

core part o the companys activities. Sika was rst involved in the sealing o the Gotthard railway tunnel against ingress owater. Following the electrication o the Swiss railway network, this work had become necessary in order to protect the electriccables against the eects o moisture. Ater the success o the Gotthard project, water gained increasing importance in the com-panys activities. The development o elaborate technical processes and the constant improvement o its products led to Sikasinternational recognition as a specialist or construction in connection with water.

No loss and no contaminationo drinking water

Only the highest standards suce or drinking water reservoirinstallations. The installations must not only meet all the sanitaryrequirements, they have to remain watertight or many years. Drink-ing water reservoirs must be waterproo externally as well as inter-nally in order that drinking water may not leak out o the reservoirand not be contaminated by inltrating liquids. The combination oSika waterproong systems and products enables tailo red solutionsor the particular project.

    > Sika Solution:Admixtures and mortars or watertight concrete

Concrete water reservoirs that must be waterproo have to bedesigned as such rom the start. But even good quality concretewill allow some passage o water. With the Sika Watertight Con-crete Concept, the load bearing concrete structure simultaneously

becomes the sealing shell. The latest admixture technology andconcrete mix designs are used in combination with high quality jointsealing systems to achieve a watertight concrete structure. Withthis, no additional externally applied coatings are needed.

    > Sika Solution:Joint sealing systems or waterproo structures

Joint sealing systems are used to close o joints and openingsbetween two or more substrates. Their main purpose is to preventwater rom entering or exiting a structure while permitting limitedmovement o the substrates. Sika oers various joint sealing sys-tems such as waterstops, adhesive tape systems, swelling prolesand injection hose systems.

    > Sika Solution:Internal coatings or the storage o po table water

Sika supplies special coatings which are suitable or the storage opotable water. They do not infuence the taste or quality o potablewater and are accepted by a number o certication bodies or usein drinking water applications.

    > Sika Solution:Membrane systems

Sika membranes or fexible waterproong have broad chemi-cal resistance and are compatible with approved water treatmentchemicals. In order to ensure the highest possible drinking waterquality, Sika has developed membranes ree o ungicides andheavy metals, complying with the highest drinking water and oodstandards.

Sika oers a unique range o complete systems and productsbased on extensive experience, and supports owners, engineersand contractors in the design and construction process.

In sewage treatment plants, waste-water is stored and subjected toa series o cleaning processes. The durability o coatings and con-tainers can be drastically reduced due to highly aggressive water. In waste water environments, concrete structures can be exposedto aggressive infuences such as mechanical erosion or chemicalattack. It is extremely important that wastewater basins do not leakcontaminated water through the structure into the ground waterand the soil. Depending on the composition o the waste water, the requirements or resistance can be met by specic selection ocoating and repair solutions.

    > Sika Solution:Mortars or concrete repair

Sika repair mortars protect exposed reinorcing steel and also with-stand harsh wastewater environments.

    > Sika Solution:Coatings or surace protection

Solutionsto ensure water supply in the uture

Small dosage, big impacton water consumption

Concrete is the most common construction material used in the world.Admixtures are chemicals added in very small amounts to concrete. In terms o active chemical this equates to less than 0.10% in a typi-cal concrete mix. Even at this low dosage they have a powerul eecton a range o concrete properties. The use o admixtures optimizes aconcrete mix, improving properties including strength and durabilityas well as helping to reduce its environmental impact.

    > Sika Solution:Admixtures or reduced water consumption or concrete

Water-reducing admixtures can be used to lower water consump-tion or concrete up to 40%. This reduction in water/cement ratiogives concrete a signicant durability enhancement and a substan-tial strength increase at both early and later stages. Admixturesenhance the eectiveness o the cement component, so that orone cubic meter o concrete less cement and water is needed.

    Opportunity

Population growth andurbanization increasedemand or ecientinrastructure. High-

perormance solutionscombined with easyapplication are needed.

The need or ecient inrastructure rises with population growth and increasing urbanization. In many

regions o the world, electrical power utility companies and water service providers are reaching

the limits o their capacity. Roads and airports are overloaded. Worldwide, projects or construction

and maintenance o inrastructure require substantial nancial resources. Especially the rapid rise o

emerging economies, where inrastructure expansion has not kept pace with the economic upturn,

calls or huge investments in inrastructure projects.

The construction, use and demolition o buildings and inrastructure generate substantial social and economic benetsor society. While on one hand this cycle paves new oundations or sustainable development, including housing, mobil-

ity, water and sanitary inrastructures, it can also result in serious negative impacts on the environment. The built envi-

ronment accounts or a large proportion o energy consumption (with associated greenhouse gas emissions), waste

generation or use o natural resources. Current concepts or land use and transport are expensive and not optimal interms o eciency. Adapting them to changed circumstances demands innovative approaches to town and country

    planning, transport and energy supply.

All over the world green building practices are encouraged. Many countries have developed standards or green

building or energy eciency or buildings; an example is the LEED system in the United States. This and systems in

other countries strongly promote creating structures and using processes that are environmentally responsible and

    resource-ecient throughout a buildings lie-cycle.

Greater emphasis is now being given to sustainability.

    Getting trac o the roads

Achieving healthier and less wasteul mobility will require an ini-tial reorganization o urban modes o transport, which continueto revolve primarily around the automobile. Less requent useo automobiles, especially by individuals, more appealing publictransportation oerings, innovative means o distributing goods, and a boom in clean vehicle use are key in shiting to a moresustainable mobility.

Transerring trac rom road to rail is a step towards Switzerlandsgoal o sustainable transportation. With well-developed railway sys-tems, passenger travel by train becomes an attractive alternativeto the car and, in some cases, even to the plane. When completedin 2017, the Gotthard Base Tunnel will be with 57 km the worldslongest tunnel. It will provide passage or ast trains weighing twicethe maximum weight o existing reight trains and allowing or an

environmentally riendly management o mobility or the ever in-creasing volumes o trac.

Sika products and know-how have a signicant share in the suc-cessul realization o this unique project. A complete range o ma-chinery, construction chemicals and waterproong products pro-vide ecient solutions needed in an inconsistent environment likethe geology o the Alps.

    > Sika Solution:Construction chemicals

In tunneling, shotcrete is used or immediate rock support and con-crete is used or nal lining. By using high-quality admixtures, Sikaclients prot rom extensive know-how about altering concrete andshotcrete properties and behavior in every process step.

    > Sika Solution:Technical equipment

Adaptable machines and systems ensure fexibility or high-outputperormance. For this reason Sika provides customers with entireconcrete spraying systems and admixtures or sprayed concrete, allrom a single source.

    > Sika Solution:Waterproong membranes

Considering the intended purpose o tunnels, it is obvious that theirwaterproong must meet particularly high quality and perormancerequirements. Saety regarding ventilation as well as durability andperect unction o all technical installations in the tunnel is o greatimportance.

Similarly as some 100 years ago, Sika is again at work when a tunnelis being bored through the Alps or one o Europes most impor-tant transport routes. The electrication o the Gotthard rail tun-nel in 1918 marked a signicant breakthrough or Sika. With theintroduction o a new type o mortar to stop water inltration, Sikaestablished its international reputation as a manuacturer o high-quality products. For the new Gotthard Base Tunnel Sika is neededagain. All around the world Sika products and services o guaranteedquality are used to make transportation inrastructure or uture-oriented mobility such as metro and rail systems easible, while atthe same time optimizing customers processes and lowering costs.

    Strengthening the structure

It is preerable, both environmentally and economically, to upgradeinrastructure rather than to demolish and rebuild it completely. De-terioration o civil engineering structures such as bridges due toenvironmental infuences and trac loads demands reurbishmentand renewal programs to maintain even current service levels. Highdurability, longer service lie and reduced maintenance cost are pil-lar requirements or all such structures.

    > Sika Solution:Composite systems or durable inrastructure

Sika strengthening systems provide a powerul solution or bolster-ing inrastructure which combines modern composite materialswith Sika adhesive technology. Strengthening is eected by bond-ing ber-reinorced polymer materials such as carbon ber platesand abrics onto weakened spots in a structure. The advantages osuch strengthening techniques are maniold: low weight, low struc-tural height, high geometric fexibility, no corrosion, ast applicationand ecient handling.

Reasons or the application can be a change o use and/or loading, modication o the structural system as well as prevention or repairo structures in seismically endangered zones.

To date Sika strengthening systems and know-how have been e-ectively applied in the repair and strengthening o existing civil en-gineering structures and in seismic retrotting.
