With the increased desire for high-performance

buildings and sustainable building products,

green roofs have become a “growing” roofing

option in North America. A “green roof,” also

known as a garden roof, vegetated roof, or

eco-roof, is simply a planted area on a flat or

sloped roof. While conventional gardens on a

rooftop usually consist of a few pots and

planters, a green roof system can cover the

whole roof area with the cultivation of plant life.

And depending on the type of green roof, you

can have everything from low growing grass and

moss to trees, shrubs, ponds and more.

Page 3: Sika Sarnafil

Today’s green roofs are modern versions of cen-

turies old roofing practices. From the hanging

gardens of Babylon, to the sod roofs in Iceland

during the Viking era, adaptations of earth-

covered roofs have been around for many years.

In Europe, extensive research and testing on how

to waterproof green roofs started in the early

1970’s. This work resulted in today’s time-proven

waterproofing solutions, allowing durable and

sustainable green roofs to “grow” in popularity.

Green roofs can now be found throughout Europe,

as well as in North America and across the world.

Green roofs are becoming a common roofing

option, turning some of our green-starved cities,

into a living habitat for nature.

“Green roofs are healthy, sustainable and regenerative roof

landscapes that can help protect our environment by

diminishing developmental impacts on our communities.”

As you can imagine, the addition of

a green roof to an otherwise unused

area on a building, is beneficial for

the surrounding environment. Initial

loss of “green” space and its inher-

ent natural processes like photosyn-

thesis are restored; now just a few

stories higher. But green roofs also

have other benefits that you might

not be aware of.

Storm-Water Retention: During heavy rainfalls, runoff from surfacessuch as pavements and rooftops can causeserious problems such as sewer overflowand water pollution. Green roofs slowdown the water flow by retaining up to75% of the rainwater, thus alleviating thepressure on storm-water infrastructures.

Reducing Energy Consumption: Green roofs are great insulators. They can reduce peak energy demand by lowering a building’s cooling costs inthe summer months and heating costs in the winter months.

Reducing the Urban Heat Island Effect: More green roofs and fewer dark coloredroofs equal a cooler city. Dark roofs retainheat while plants naturally cool their surrounding environments through evapotranspiration cycles. In cities wherethe ambient temperature can be up to 10 degrees hotter than the surroundingareas, green roofs can help bring the overall temperature down.

Waterproofing MembraneProtection: A green roof protects the waterproofingmembrane from damaging UV rays,freeze-thaw cycling and repeated foot traffic, extending its lifespan. Some greenroofs in Europe have lasted more than 40 years without being replaced.

Improved Air Quality: Green roofs filter air by absorbing andconverting carbon dioxide to oxygen.

LEED® Points: The U.S. Green Building Council’s(USGBC) LEED program is a rating system for the design and construction of high-performance, sustainable buildings.Green roofs qualify for at least two pointsand contribute to more under specific conditions.

Sound Insulation: Soil and plants are an effective sound insulator.

Aesthetics: Green roofs are visually stimulating and can make great areas for recreation and pleasure.

Increased Property Value: Installing a green roof can increase property value by providing a valuablebuilding asset.

“When you specify a Sarnafil Green Roof, you get more than watertight

security, you get peace of mind knowing you made the right choice.”

Why Choose Sarnafil?Performance over time is the only truetest of a waterproofing system’s quality.Sarnafil has been waterproofing greenroofs and other landscaped areas acrossEurope for over 35 years and in theUnited States for over 25 years. With close to 4 billion square feet of roofing and waterproofing membraneinstalled worldwide, architects, specifiersand building owners know they candepend on Sarnafil for proven productsand system performance.

When you specify a Sarnafil Green Roof, you get more than watertight security;you get peace of mind knowing you made the right choice. The Sarnafil G476

membrane is specially designed for sub-grade environments, compounded toremain watertight in extreme conditionsincluding constant dampness, pondingwater, high and low alkaline conditionsand exposure to plant roots, fungi andbacterial organisms.

Extensive and Intensive There are two Green Roof categories:Extensive and Intensive.

Extensive green roofs are generally lowerin weight and cost and require less plantmaintenance. With only a few inches ofsoil, extensive green roofs typically support plants that are tolerant of highheat, drought, wind and frost like grasses,

wildflowers and moss. Extensive roofs are often used in areas that will not besubject to regular traffic.

Intensive green roofs are generally heavier, cost more and require more maintenance. However, because the soil is deeper, intensive green roofs canaccommodate trees, shrubs, bushes andvegetable gardens. It is not uncommon to see an intensive green roof used forrecreational purposes.

“Sarnafil provides the flexibility to choose the green roof

application that best fits your building’s design criteria.”

Sarnafil has green roof systems

for use on both concrete and

metal deck applications. Sarnafil

provides the flexibility to choose

the application that best fits your

building’s design criteria.

Sarnafil’s Adhered Waterproofing SystemWhen your building demands absolutesystem integrity with maximum watertight security, Sarnafil’s adheredmembrane is the installation for you.Sarnafil’s adhered waterproofing membrane is bonded directly to the substrate providing the best protectionagainst water migration. If a leak doesoccur, water migration will be limited. This system is ideal for buildings that protect sensitive or expensive equipmentand inventory.

Advantages:› Limits water migration › Reduces the risk of expensive removal

and replacement of overburden

Sarnafil’s Grid Waterproofing SystemFor projects where the substrate is contaminated or you need to go over apreviously failed waterproofing system,Sarnafil has designed the grid system. The grid system combines all the advantages of a loose-laid membraneinstallation with the added security ofadhered membrane grid strips, or water-stops, for exceptional performance. It isespecially effective in retrofit applicationswhere existing waterproofing membranesare difficult or costly to remove.

Advantages:› The adhered grid strips act as a sub-

membrane waterstop minimizing any watermigration below the waterproofing membrane

› Optional monitoring drains can be installed in each grid area as a control and alertingmechanism, and to allow the repair of minor damage without overburden removal. The monitoring drains also provide a meansto test each section before and after theinstallation of the overburden

› The systems can be installed economicallyover existing waterproofing with minimaldeck preparation and removal

More Sarnafil BenefitsSarnafil’s waterproofing membrane is specially designed for sub-grade environ-ments. The G476 membrane is availablein a range of thicknesses to match yourapplication, overburden type and specificproject requirements. Highly punctureresistant, its bright orange color makes it easy to identify and inspect to maintainhigh levels of quality assurance and control during installation.

Root ResistanceMany waterproofing membranes are notresistant to root penetration. They fail, often in five years or less, due to root infiltration into the field seams and flash-ings. Sarnafil membranes are inherentlyroot and algae resistant and require noadditional barriers to be added to the system. Sarnafil membranes have passedthe most stringent European tests for root resistance including both the GermanFLL and the Swiss SIA 280 standards. The FLL standard test exposes the waterproofing membrane to 4 years ofaccelerated root growth.

Heat Welded Seams and Flashings Faulty seams and details are a commonsource of leaks in green roofs. Somewaterproofing membranes use sealants, adhesives or tapes to secure the seams, but because Sarnafil’s membrane is thermoplastic, seams and flashings are welded together using Sarnafil’s automatic hot-air welder, the Sarnamatic. When welded together, the sheetsbecome one monolithic layer of materialimpervious to moisture infiltration.
