Guidelines for Completion Requirements Section

Effective Autumn 2020, approved changes in graduate program change proposals will be updated in the UW general catalog as submitted in this form. To align with Graduate School requirements and General Catalog style guidelines, please adhere to the following:

• State the minimum required total credits in the first line, before listing requirements.• Use numbered lists for completion requirements.• Group courses/requirements into categories whenever possible and italicize the name of the

requirement (e.g. core coursework or methods courses).• Any course REQUIRED for all students in the program must be listed.• For electives or other selective lists of courses in which students are required to complete a specific

content area but can choose from a defined list, state the name or category of the list and the credits required; the list of courses should not be written here. Instead, state "course list maintained internally by the program."

• List courses by prefix and number; do not include course title or course credits.o Exception: courses that are variable credits and required to be taken for a specific number of

credits (e.g. a 1 credit professional seminar that must be taken for a total of 5 credits)• List non-course requirements after courses. Include minimal details about non-course requirements,

such as timing in the program or summary of the requirement. Lengthy descriptions of procedural details are not necessary.

• Degree programs vs degree options: List any requirements which are common to all degrees/options in your program at the program (e.g. Master of Science, Doctor of Philosophy) level. For requirements specific to a given degree option, list them underneath a new sub-heading labeled as such.

• Program requirements that align with Graduate School requirements (18 graded credits, minimum GPA, etc.) need not be included here.
