The Situation• Media specialists expected to teach
research process and use technologies• Difficult to create unique assignments
for evaluating what students learn from this research that are appropriate for meeting the needs of diverse learners
• Writing works for some but not all
Goal• To design an activity that allows
second grade students to demonstrate their understanding of the Wampanoag while supporting each individual’s unique learning needs
The Technology: Pixie• A creativity tool • “Today’s classrooms are made up of many
different students with diverse learning styles and needs. Pixie provides tools for all students to demonstrate creativity and understanding. By combining their writing and supporting their ideas with pictures, original illustrations, and audio narration, students can share what they know in ways that support their learning needs.”

Audience• In alignment with the second grade
curriculum• Can be adapted for students of other
grades in the elementary school who are researching different topics and have different ability levels
• Pixie easy to use, so even students as young as kindergarten can use it effectively
Learning Styles• Designed to meet the needs of
many different learning styles• Pixie can cater to these different
needs– students can express themselves
through writing or drawing to his or her own ability level to covey what they learned
Why Technology?• Technology is motivational• Solely writing can become
monotonous– Gives these tasks a face-lift
• Pixie is just another way to captivate learners
Teaching Styles• Behaviorism
– Direct instructions for the steps of project– Grade = reinforcement
• Constructivism– Learn through discovery– construct their own understanding of what
they learned through writing and art
