This was a surreal winter for so many reasons—not the least of which was the weather. 72 degrees one day and snow the next? No one ever claimed that Minnesota weather made sense, but it hasn’t scared us away yet. Maybe that’s because we know we always have a warm place to escape to with a cozy fire, a hot cup of coffee or an adult beverage, and lively conversation.Whether you spent the whole winter with us or you found yourself hibernating, we want to extend a formal invitation to you and your family: Let’s get out of the house. Let’s find cause for celebration. Let’s find common ground. Let’s connect and engage. Let’s toast to more sunshine and more laughter and a stronger sense of community. We have a packed list of activities and events to fill up your calendar (and maybe fill up your soul a little bit along the way). Our goal: for you to finish up this spring thinking: My cup runneth over. Here are just a few of the things we have planned for you:

• Kentucky Derby Party: We’re off to the races on Saturday, May 6th,. Don your best hats and dapper attire and enjoy southern-inspired food and drink, and a live feed of the race.

• Mother’s Day Brunch: Celebrate mom with wonderful food in a gorgeous setting on Sunday, May 14th.

• Member Weekend at Stout’s Island Lodge: Join us from May 19th-21st for an escape to the Island of Happy Days. Relax, unwind, enjoy gourmet food, have a sunset cocktail on the dock, and roast S’mores under the stars.

• Memorial Day Pig Roast and Pool Opener: On Monday, May 29th (Memorial Day), the wait is over—it’s pool season once again! Join us for a party to remember.

• Sunsplash Pool Party: Music, dancing, and more await you on June 29th.Reservations are limited. For more information or reservations for any of these (or our many other events), please contact us promptly so you don’t miss out.Thank you for spending time with us, and with each other. You are the best part of what we do.See you at the Club!Stephanie Laitala-RuppPresident

LOOKOUTTHE AROUND THE CLUBS

We’ve heard this story before: Someone engages with the University Club out of convenience or curiosity and falls head over heels in love. We at the University Club are grateful that it happened to Phil Olmstead.Phil joined us six years ago while still in college. His first gig: Serving as an art teacher for Camp UClub. He was bitten by the Club bug and kept coming back, working his way through several positions (and continuing his education in the meantime). Today, armed with a BFA in photography with a minor in teaching art from the College of Visual Arts, Phil works at the reception desk and is a vital part of our membership team. The Club suits Phil. The main draw? The people. Phil describes the staff as a family. He also “loves getting to know our members,” and has become close with a lot of Club regulars, whom he describes as “lovely people.” (We tend to agree.) His job keeps him busy, but one of the reasons he’s so good at this role is that he goes above and beyond doling out information and takes the time to engage with the people he encounters every day. Coworkers describe him as friendly, polite, and calm under pressure. So it’s mostly about the people, but there’s another reason Phil’s so enamored with the Club. The self-proclaimed history buff loves working in an historic building and for an organization that has such a rich tradition. He’s especially fond of the 1920s, so feel free to chat him up about F. Scott Fitzgerald (who was a regular at the Club)!

Spring arrived and with it an assortment of activities for kids and adults alike at the U club and SPAC. March brought with it the U Club’s Annual Scotch Tasting and the Commonwealth Properties’ Chefs’ Dinner. Children from both Clubs enjoyed a perfor-mance and yo-yoing lesson from Dazzling Dave: The Yoyo Master during Hands on Sunday. In April, the Clubs celebrated Easter with a lavish buffet, a petting zoo and Easter egg hunt.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHTPsst—the gentleman you see playing bridge and sipping the Club’s signature blend of Earl Grey tea? He’s a bit of a local celebrity. Just don’t tell him we said that; he’s awfully modest. Stephen Rocheford is President and CEO of Lavender Media and founder of the wildly successful Lavender Magazine. Around these parts, however, he’s equally

well known for heading up our bridge club. We caught up with Stephen to talk tea, bridge, and what he’s going to do when he grows up.UC: You have quite an unusual career path. There can’t be too many people who go from being a major in the Army to head honcho at a magazine. And there were a few other stops along the way, yes?SR: Head honcho! [Laughs.] I never planned to become the head honcho of Lavender. I started out as a regular army officer, worked in nonprofits, started my own businesses, and then started Lavender magazine in 1995.

UC: Food and dining are a substantial part of Lavender Magazine, so we’re assuming that’s something you’re interested in on a personal level. We hope we’re up to your standards at the Club!SR: The haut cuisine at the club is trés magnifique, so dining at the Club is one of the main reasons I go there. And they have a great blend of Earl Grey tea!

UC: What prompted you to join the Club in the first place, assuming you didn’t already know about our tea?SR: I joined the University Club because it has reciprocity in cities around the U.S. and Canada that I travel to for business and pleasure. And in addition to going there for food and drink, I’ve attended several events at the Club over the years and find them all delightful. And I do love the tea. And the ice cream!

UC: And, of course, there’s the bridge. How did you end up running the bridge club?SR: I was drafted!

UC: Spoken like an army veteran. You’ve accomplished so much; what’s next for you? Anything on your bucket list?SR: I think the top of the list includes playing bridge daily, drinking Earl Grey daily, finishing writing a book, and managing to smile at all the incredible things going on around me. As for what’s next, I have no idea where I am going or how to get there. I’m not sure what I am supposed to do when I grow up. If you find out, please let me know.Note from the UC: The bridge club meets on Sundays at 2 p.m. from October through May. Learn more about Lavender Magazine at www.lavendermagazine.com.

WINE CLUB by Cory Biladeau

What wines have you tried this winter? As winter has finally ended, consider picking up one or two of the wines we’ve loved with the wine club. It’s a great way to celebrate the beginning of spring. The wine club has been wowed by fabulous wines and food pairings from the Iberian Peninsula for the last couple of months - and for a large part of this winter! In March our hosts brought us phenomenal wines from Portugal. We started off with a couple of Vinho Verde wines: Twin Vines & Quinta De Raza. We progressed into the Reds, with Cabriz, Jose De Sousa and Vale Do Bomfim Douro. Still staying with the Reds, but changing gears a bit with the comparisons we tried Duas Quintas & Alambre Moscatel. In bringing the evening to its climax it was finished with Dueling Ports, both Ruby & Tawny-fabulous! What amazing fun - not only to compare and taste wonderful wines, but to compare Ports as well. These wine are very affordable and went directly onto our shopping lists; excellent wines to share with friends. Do try it, you’ll love it!As March inevitably rolls into April, our hosts in April brought us wonderful wines and Tapas from Spain to compare and taste.

We started out with a Cava most are familiar with, Freixenet, Cordon Negro, always enjoyable. Starting with the still wines, our white wine of the evening was delicious, Xarmant Txacolina. The Reds were absolutely fabulous as well and we highly recommend them. We had the next four in 2 sets of side by side tastings. In the first set we had Marques de Riscal (Rioja Reserva) and Marques de Caceres (Rioja Reserva) and in the second Les Crestes (Priorat) and Les Terrasses (Priorat). All of which were wonderful. It is truly amazing the variety of flavors you can detect, distinguishing between two wines that are from different vineyards, despite being of the same grape varietal and region of origin. We finished off the evening with an incredibly interesting dessert wine, Pedro Ximemez. It finished off the evening with panache. With all of the incredible dessert wines there are, finish your evenings with panache!Cheers!Cory Biladeau

Investment Club members attending the past several meetings focused on strategies  to minimize portfolio volatility.  One such move would be to allocate investments across the ten business sectors (but not necessarily equal weighting to all sectors).  Currently the portfolio is invested in seven of the ten sectors.  Absent are Energy, Utilities, and Real Estate Investment Trusts. Investments in these areas are likely to be on the agenda for future meetings. One of the goals is to select investments that are likely to produce 15% annual appreciation.  Of the eleven stocks held in its portfolio, eight have unrealized gains well in excess of the goal (during the past twelve months).  None have losses for the same period. Not too shabby for a bunch of amateurs.

During one of the previous meetings some members were interested in searching for opportunities  existing in the robotics industry.  No question it is a fast developing industry especially in the driverless automotive industry.  So what will future investments look like? It will be an eye opening search.

If you are interested in participating in any of the monthly discussions we would welcome you as guests and maybe as future members.   Meetings are scheduled on the second Wednesday of each month. They start at 5:30 PM and adjourn at 7 PM.  If you would like additional information re: the club activities, please e-mail Gene Mason at [email protected].

INVESTMENT CLUB ACTIVITIES

This January, as the long winter settled over St. Paul, the University Club launched its Travel Club, a place where members could share tales of past travels and plot future adventures together. The Club is growing with a membership of over 20 who attend meetings, share travel stories, enjoy Club nights together, plus plot travel near and far. In addition to sharing travel tips and stories, one of the goals of the Travel Club is to become more aware of the reciprocal clubs whose dining and lodging facilities are just waiting to be enjoyed by members of the University Club. One Sunday in March, twelve Travel Club members met at the Woman’s Club of Minneapolis where we spent almost three delightful hours getting better acquainted over a gourmet brunch accompanied by complimentary champagne and wine. Not only can dining and lodging be exceptional at our reciprocal clubs, they offer a unique opportunity to meet new people and get to know more about an area in the U.S. or even abroad. One of our members, Bill French, recently took a trip to Japan and enjoyed the Tokyo American Club where he “was treated like royalty.” The Travel Club hopes to have a summer adventure to another of the Minnesota clubs and venture out by train to Chicago, Milwaukee, or beyond. Then in September a trip for some to Edinburgh will include a stay at the Royal Scots Club and in later fall others will be off to Austria for a stay in the heart of the Alps at the Kitzbuhel Country Club. Meetings are the fourth Wednesday each month at 7:00 p.m. Please Join Us! Contact Sharron Pelham for more details on meetings or adventures. [email protected]

Did you know that tennis is the only game that uses the word “love” in the scoring? I love tennis because it fully engages you physically and mentally. I love tennis for the way it encourages you to think for yourself, to learn and adapt, and to accept personal responsibility for winning and losing. I love tennis because it builds more than healthy bodies and active minds. Tennis builds character. And it’s one of the few sports that can be played for a lifetime. According to world-renowned scientists from a variety of disciplines, there is no doubt that tennis is one of the best sports for you to play. Here are some of the reasons:1. People who participate in 3 hours per week of tennis cut

their risk of heart disease in half, according to physician Ralph Paffembager who studied over 10,000 people over 20 years.

2. Tennis players have more vigor, optimism and self-esteem and less depression, anger, confusion, anxiety and tension than other athletes and non-athletes according to Dr. Joan Finn and colleagues at Southern Connecticut State University.

3. Tennis generates new connections between nerves in the brain due to alertness and tactical thinking and thus

promotes a lifetime of continuing development of the brain, reported scientists at University of Illinois.

4. Competitive tennis burns more calories than aerobics, in-line skating or cycling according to studies on caloric expenditures.

For the avid tennis player the game is a part of who they are. They live and love the sport; tell stories about the way they play, or the way they used to play. And their love for the game tells a story about them. Playing tennis on the clay court leaves players more physically and emotionally satisfied than other surfaces. The physical satisfaction comes from playing longer points and matches without over-stressing the knees, back and lower extremities. The emotional satisfaction comes from the thinking, creating and the strategic responding that goes into each point and each match.Playing on the clay surface slows shots down, equalizing levels of play and allowing varying ages and ability levels to have fun playing together. Tennis is good for your body, mind and spirit. Tennis is fun, heathy and can be learned and played at any age.Tennis is a sport of” love” and a sport for life!

Private Yoga Lessons While group classes can be a source of motivation, a gathering of a community, and exposure to many forms of yoga, there may come a time when you can benefit from private care and instruction. Private instruction is great for those newer to yoga, or for one who has experience with group classes but would like to focus on particular challenges or limitations. Your practice will be completely tailored to fit your needs in an open and non-judgemental space. Private sessions are suitable for all ages and abilities as the use of props and modifications are strongly encouraged. Each session is customized to aid the healing of injuries, aches, and pains, or to challenge your strength and learn to safely move deeper into the poses.

What are some common reasons people choose private yoga?Rehabilitation from injuries is a common request, along with people who are intimidated by taking a class with lots of other people. Some clients want to get in shape, and this is a great way to do that mindfully. For many, motivation, stress reduction, and

fitness are the reasons yogis choose private lessons, along with increased flexibility, improvement of general toning, or increased relaxation. I have a lot of experience with athletes working with injuries or specific areas of immobility. Private yoga allows the client to receive hands on adjustments for every pose, helping the client learn how to master poses and go deeper more quickly.

What happens at someone’s first private lesson? The first time is usually a getting to know you session mixed in with learning the client’s body and physical needs. We talk about injuries, tightness, and lifestyle. There’s an open dialogue to learn the client’s goals. Sessions start with slow movement and supported poses to ascertain where you’re at in your fitness and yoga practice. Often in the first session, the primary poses will be used to assess where the imbalances are in the body that need to be addressed the most. All sessions end with Sarah’s hands on approach to muscle releasing and a supported savasana. By the end of the first session, the path is clear for the client’s practice and what they need.

What do you recommend for beginners? The foundation of yoga is the most important thing for those starting out. Don’t be discouraged if it takes time. Enjoy the process, as you’ll only be new to yoga one time in your life. I am a strong advocate for learning proper alignment, especially for beginners. The great thing about private instruction is that you will learn from the beginning the proper way to hold the poses, so when you enter a group class there will be less chance of injuring yourself, or causing more stress on your body from doing the poses with improper alignment. Private classes mean lots of hands on and starting people off on the right path.

What are the benefits of taking a private class? There’s safety in private yoga instruction and all the attention is on you! All your injuries and special needs are addressed in each pose. You can also build a new practice much faster than in a group setting, due to

the focused training you are receiving. You develop a relationship with the teacher, and each class is fine-tuned to your needs. You will find yourself understanding the poses in an entirely different way and using the correct muscle groups. The one-on-one assistance both makes you work harder and gives you moments that are reminiscent of a massage with deep moments of release. Each session is catering everything to the client’s specific body and needs. For the client, it feels good and it feels successful, because it’s happening at your skill level. A private instructor helps you gain confidence, and progress rapidly and safely.

What are some private yoga class successes you’ve had?A woman came to me with intense shoulder tension. After just one session, she understood downward facing dog in an entirely new way. She left the session with a huge release of her shoulder pain and has been able to take this into the group classes that she attends regularly. An attorney who started working with Sarah led a very stressful lifestyle. At times he was up for 3-4 days straight, preparing and reading briefs. He knew he wanted to do yoga, but only for the physical relief it might provide. He didn’t even consider the mental components— the tools—like breathing, stress relief, and caring for a maxed out nervous system. Just over the course of 8 sessions, he’s reported that his physical symptoms have improved, but mainly his stress and ability to have work boundaries have improved. He’s happier overall and sees more life balance.

What is your experience?Sarah has experience working with bodies suffering from chronic pain, injury, illness, and other forms of dis-ease. She works with a variety of populations including athletes, seniors, artists, dancers, and children, those who struggle with depression, trauma, and those recovering from injury. With hands on adjustments, Sarah delivers insightful results and a greater sense of ease and body awareness in her students. Along with slow flow vinyasa style yoga, Sarah also teaches restorative and therapeutic yoga. She has over 1000 hours of yoga training and is on her way to becoming a certified yoga therapist. Sarah earned a BFA in dance at the University of Minnesota. Her experience includes teaching at the Lemuel Shattock Hospital in Boston, Harvard Center for Wellness, MIT, the University of Minnesota, as well as yoga studios, gyms, and as a part of wellness programs for corporations. She is currently studying to become a certified Feldenkrais practitioner as a part of the Boston Feldenkrais training.

DESCRIPTION OF CLASS: Interested in participating in the Tough Mudder with your fellow SPAC members? Do you have goals of completing your first 5K, half or full marathon? Are you trying to improve upon a time? The truth is most of us run to train but very few of us train to run. The difference between the two is profound. This class is designed to make you a stronger, faster runner. By dropping volume and increasing intensity we can drastically improve aerobic capacity without subjecting our bodies to the muscle wasting and joint pain associated with long bouts of pavement pounding. Classes will consist of high intensity interval work, Fartleks, stair work, plyometric drills and tempo runs. Let’s get outside and take advantage of the nice weather. Let’s get outside and run!
