After winning the fight, March of Dimes continued to

fund lifesaving breakthroughs for babies: the PKU test

that saves thousands of babies from mental

retardation each year; educating women to take the B

vitamin- folic acid to reduce the incidence of spina

bifida; spearheading neonatal intensive care units

(NICU’s) to care for premature and critically ill babies,

just to name a few.

 Paul A. Caruso, MD, NeonatologyDr. Caruso received a B.S. degree in Biochemistry from the University of California at Davis. He received his MD degree in 1994 from the St. Louis University School of Medicine. Dr. Caruso completed a Pediatrics internship and residency at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center in St. Louis. He completed a Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine fellowship at the University of California at Davis.  Dr. Caruso is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics.

The Starfish StoryA man was walking along a beach covered with thousands of starfish

that had washed ashore. They were dying. Every so often the man would pick up a starfish, and with a mighty cast of his arm; throw it back into the ocean. Then he’d walk on, stop, stoop down and repeat the process. He did this over and over.

Another man on a nearby sand dune watched in great puzzlement. Eventually he could stand it no longer and headed towards the mysterious beach walker. When he reached the man he pointed to the starfish littering the sand and said, “There are so many. You’re not making a difference.”The beach walker paused, picked up a starfish, held it out tenderly for the curious man to see, then, with another mighty cast, sent it back to the depths of the sea. He turned back to the confused man, smiled and said, “I made a difference to that one.”
