Read the following text and choose/pick the correct answer of each of the following

questions : (Q. No. 71 - 75).

Laura Bohannan, an American anthropologist, arrived in west Africa to conduct fieldwork

among the TIV. Her mission was to study the ceremonies and rituals observed by the TIV.

She carried with her Shakespeare’s HAMLET to read whenever she would find leisure during

her fieldwork. Unfortunately, she reached the field during rainy season, when no ceremonies

or rituals were performed by the TIV, as the entire area turned into marshy land, except for

some up-lands, where the villagers assembled and lived together in a cluster of homesteads.

Laura lived in a hut very near to the headman’s homesteads. Every day the villagers assembled

at the house of the headman, brewed and drank local beer, and gossiped throughout the

day. Their gossips were confined to folktales. They were expert story tellers with all the

dramatic gestures at their command. Laura Bohannan, with a view to utilize her valuable

time of research, began to collect folktales. Every day, she would go to the house of the

headmen and carefully noted the stories told by them. One day, the headman asked her to

tell a story of her own country. She became nervous, as she had never expected of it. She said

that she was not as competent a story teller as them. But the headman said that if she declined

to tell a story, they would stop telling her story anymore. Having been helpless, she began to

tell the story of HAMLET. She started that long, long ago in her country; a king was

treacherously killed by his own brother, who also married the wife of the slain king. One

day, the guards saw the ghost of the king roaming about the palace. The headman interrupted,

“What is a ghost ?”. Laura explained that it was the shadow of the dead king. Headman

exclaimed, “ Impossible, how can a dead man or a shadow walk ? You do not know. It must

have been a Zombie. Any sorcerer must have animated the corpse of the dead king by his

magical powers. Laura Bohannan was at a fix. Nevertheless, she proceeded to tell the story

further, and said, “ The prince was very sad because his widow mother had been married to

his uncle.” “What of that”, said the headman . “In our society also a widow is married to the

younger brother of the deceased”, he added. And thus, in every step of the story, one

listener or the other, excitedly interrupted Laura and suggested that as she was not a

knowledgeable person, therefore, when she returns she must tell his people that TIVs are not

unwise people. Finally, Laura had to agree to whatever way they twisted the story of HAMLET.

However, as an anthropologist, she also realized that though HAMLET represented the society

and culture of Europe of Shakespeare’s time but it was universally intelligible. By any means,

when elements of culture travel to far off places, they lose their originality, and often assume

new form.

71. Who was Laura Bohannan ?

(1) A Philanthropist (2) A member of the TIV community

(3) An Anthropologist (4) A character in Shakespeare’s HAMLET

72. Why did she carry HAMLET with her ?

(1) Because she wanted to tell the story to the Headman.

(2) To read the book during leisure hours.

(3) Because she had never studied any book of Shakespeare.

(4) Because she wanted to let the TIV know that she too was a ‘knowledgable person’.

73. Why did TIV not believe in ghost ?

(1) Because there were no ghosts in the TIV land.

(2) Because they believed that neither a dead person nor his shadow could walk.

(1) That when elements of culture travel to far off places, they lose their originality, andoften assume new form.

(2) That the TIVs were simpletons.

(3) That instead of wasting time she should agree to what the headman says.

(4) That if she did not agree to what they said, the headman would harm her physically.

75. Why was Laura Bohannan collecting folktales among the TIV ?

(1) Because she wanted to utilize the time by collecting folktales, as no ceremony or ritualwas taking place there.

(2) Because she liked to listen to the folktales.

(3) Because she wanted to tell those folktales to her friends.

(4) Because she had never heard any folktale earlier.
