On Saturday, March 19th, about 20 Grand Lifers headed off to Silverado’s for our Easter luncheon prior to the pageant. After a quick lunch, we were blessed with an absolutely outstanding performance of One Holy Lamb. We’ve heard the story of Christ’s life, death and resurrection many times, and it doesn’t grow old. But again, the Immanuel team put a new twist on it. The story this year was told from the viewpoint of Micah, an ambitious Pharisee, and his family. Micah was trying to fit in with the Pharisees. Meanwhile, his family members were becoming more and more convinced that Jesus was someone very special, likely the Messiah—a view that Micah rejected. Finally, the evidence became overwhelming for him, and he and his family were united as followers of Jesus. The story of Jesus told through the eyes of this ordinary family was very powerful and moving.

It was a presentation honoring to the Lord with great music, drama, and dancing, and a clear gospel message to those who did not yet know Jesus as their personal Savior. One particularly outstanding performance was Rachel Childress’ rendition of Via Dolorosa. Jesse reminded the congregation that Jesus had said He would bring division in families, as demonstrated in this portrayal, but that He could unite those who repent and follow Him.

Easter Pageant Sight & Sound– Samson

Forty Seven Grand Lifers headed to Lancaster, PA at 9 a.m. on Friday, April 1st. Bob Karch and Clint Shondelmyer were kind enough to drive our buses. Though we encountered some traffic, we arrived at the Hershey Farm Restaurant at about 12:15. We were seated and invited to their large buffet of all sorts of tasty food. We all had plenty of time to eat, talk, and shop before boarding our buses to return to the Sight and Sound Theater for their musical presentation of Samson. The story of Samson was narrated by his father, Manoah. We started with an angel’s promise that Manoah’s barren wife would bear him a son who would deliver the people of Israel from the oppres-sion of the Philistines. Samson throughout his adult life had a love-hate relationship with the Philistines. His impetuous marriage to a Philistine woman led to his killing of many Philistines. The immense strength that the Lord gave him was demonstrated in carrying a city gate on his shoul-ders and fighting huge numbers of Philistines sin-gle-handedly. But his inability to control his na-ture led to his unfortunate relationship with Deli-lah, who professed love for him but sold him out to his foes. The final act of his life, where he brings the temple of Dagon down on top of himself and thousands of Philistines, was indeed spectacular—with huge pieces of the temple raining down on the stage. As usual at Sight and Sound, the drama, singing, sets, and special effects were first rate. The perfor-mance clearly presented the gospel as well as the life of one who was deeply flawed, like all of us, but still used powerfully by the Lord.

Israel Recap

On Friday, April 15, 2016 a large group of Grand-Lifers gathered for a report on a recent trip to Isra-el. Many in the audience had been part of the tour group. This had been one of the excellent trips that Dave and Charlotte Treadwell lead to Israel on an almost annual basis. Michael Connor, Im-manuel’s Mission and Outreach Pastor, had accom-panied the group, providing the Bible commentary on sites they were visiting.

The reports from the tour group were that Michael had done a great job with the Bible commentary for the group. Likewise, he did a really great trave-logue for the Grand Life group. Both his slides and commentary on the trip were absolutely first rate. For those of us who had been in Israel, either on this trip or previous ones, the presentation trig-gered pleasant memories. For those who had not been to Israel, it probably triggered a desire to do so.

The Zamfinos provided a tasty lunch of sandwich-

es, a pasta dish, fruit salad and chocolate sundaes.

Thank you, Joe and Joanne for a great lunch.

On Friday, May 19, 2016, a large group of Grand-Lifers gathered to learn about Awana (A Worker And Not Ashamed—from 2 Tim. 2:15). The pre-senters were Neal and Karole Dillard. The Dillards are Awana missionaries, helping churches in the Shenandoah Valley to establish Awana programs or strengthen ones already in existence.

AWANA Presentation

The Dillards were highly involved in Immanuel for 24 years. Neal was an elder much of that time, including a couple years as chairman. He and Ka-role worked in Immanuel’s Awana program, in-cluding as the program commanders for several years before they moved to the Shenandoah Val-ley. Awana was created by Paul Rader, an amaz-ing man of God, in 1940 at the Chicago Gospel Tabernacle, and nurtured by Art Rorheim, “Mr. Awana. ” The program of Awana, for kids 2 to 18, has pretty much been unchanged over the years. The gospel is shared every week. There is time for fun. And there is time for serious memorization of Scripture. Two-year-olds memorize four verses per year. In high school, the kids read the Bible, learn a summary of each book, and memorize 1,000 vers-es. The motto is to Reach Kids, Equip Leaders, Change the World. Core principles are to teach kids to serve and to lead. And Awana works eve-rywhere. Over three million kids are in enrolled in more than 42,000 clubs in more than 100 denomi-nations in 115 countries. It operates in many countries hostile to the gospel, e.g., 527 clubs in Vietnam, 327 in Indonesia, over 2,000 in Nepal, and more than 7,600 in India.

As always, the Zamfinos provided a delicious meal which consisted of breaded chicken breast, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, rolls and butter-scotch pudding. Thank you, Joe and Joanne for another great lunch!

On Saturday, May 7th, at 9:00 AM, 15 Grand Lifers headed to Manassas Regional Airport. We were able to place our seats next to the runway fence, close to the action. Although the weather seemed unpromising, the air show started on time. All acts with the exception of a sky diving team were able to perform. Although the whole show was entertaining, there were some real highlights. Performers from the Flying Circus in Bealeton did a wing walk followed by their formation flying with three Stearman biplanes.

Another highlight was Scott Francis and his amazing aero acrobatics in his little blue MXS aircraft. His ability to fly the aircraft in challenging altitudes and his perfect control in spins were magnificent to watch. Art Nalls, a retired Marine Harrierpilot, and his Sea Harrier impressed the audience by hovering over the runway and made a vertical descent to land. It was impressive but loud. According to one source, the downdraft from the engine in such a landing is so hot that it can scorch the nonskid coating off a Navy carrier deck.

Thanks to Jim for driving us. And thanks to God

for safe travel, for a good time together, and for a

lot of fun watching some fine flying.

Manassas Air Show

On Saturday, June 4th, at 9:00 AM, 19 Grand Lif-ers headed to Manassas on another overcast day. (What is it about trips to Manassas that brings overcast days?). After some difficulty securing a parking space, we were visited the Harris pavilion where a number of elaborate model trains were laid out. Entertainment took place on a stage next to the pavilion for the duration of the festi-val. Although we missed a martial arts perfor-mance, we did catch the last stages of a dance troupe performing. Then a nice young lady from Wildlife Ambassadors introduced us to a number of interesting animals. In early afternoon, we watched the Bull Run Cloggers of Manassas and the Calico Cloggers of Fairfax/Alexandria perform. There were some good museums nearby, as well. And for the many tourists who had brought kids, there were various bouncing and climbing activi-ties. When lunchtime came, we had a lot of choic-es. A number of nice restaurants were nearby, and there were several food carts as well. Food was plentiful, varied, and tasty.

As always, lunch was tasty. We had grilled

chicken breast, rolls, potato salad, and a green

salad with chocolate cake for dessert. Delicious!

On Friday, June 17th, 2016, a large group of Grand-Lifers gathered for a Bible quiz. The quiz was set up as a modified Jeopardy game, with each of six tables of Grand Lifers as a quiz team. Pastor Alex Hairgrove took the role of Alex Trebek and ministry assistant Jennis Horn took the role of Vanna White. (OK, so we’ve mixed a couple game shows here. But so what?) And Angela Abdel-masih kept score for the six teams. We had five Jeopardy categories—Old Testament, New Testament, Famous Families, Geography, and Songs and Spiritual Songs. The last category was intended to be an easy category but ended up being one of the most difficult categories. This was done a bit differently from the TV game. The six teams took turns choosing a category and amount, then all six teams conferred to come up with an answer for that question. Each team with the correct answer received the appropriate num-ber of points. It was a close contest as we went along. The teams did well with most of the ques-tions with the exception for the Final Jeopardy question which stumped all teams. As often hap-pens on the actual Jeopardy show, it was the Final Jeopardy question that determined the winner. Overall, Bible Jeopardy was a hit!

And on top of all the fun of Bible Jeopardy itself,

there were prizes!! And they were very nice priz-

es—for everyone. What a pleasant surprise.
