    Freud believed that all Children are bornwith powerful sexual urges .

    Stage One- The Oral StageBirth- 18 months

    Freud believed that People in this stagessatisfied their sexual urges throughsucking, biting and swallowing.

    Being weaned from breast feeding was thefirst challenge they would face in whichthey did not get what they wanted.

    Freud believed how you dealt with thischallenge would influence yourpersonality.

    Those who dealt with this stage successfullywould move into stage 2.

    They would exhibit one of the followingpersonalities:

    Oral Receptive- Pre-occupied with eating,drinking, smoking, biting nails.

    Oral receptive people are generally passive.

    Oral Aggressive- These people are hostileand verbally abusive to others.

    Stage Two- The Anal Stage18 months to three years

    According to Freud A child in the Anal Stagesatisfies its sexual desires through itstoileting habits.

    When the child is free to use the bathroomwhen and how it wants it is most satisfied.

    The conflict in this stage is the restriction onits toliet habit presented by toilet training.

    Consequences of the Anal Stage

    A child who accepts the challenge of toilettraining learns an important socializationskill and moves to the next stage.

    A child which does not deal with the conflictpresent by toilet training will develop oneof the following personalities:

    Anal Retentive Anal retentive people willalways seek order and tidiness. Thesepeople are perfectionists.

    Anal Expulsive- Anal expulsive people aremessy, and careless. They usually do notshow a great deal of self-control.

    Stage Three-The Phallic Stage3 to 5 years old

    According to Freud children in this stagediscover their genitals.

    They are taught that it is not sociallyacceptable to expose yourself. This is theconflict of this Phallic Stage.

    The Phallic Stage

    During the Phallic stage boys will identifywith the values of their Father and girls willdo the same with their mother.

    Children in the Phallic stage will becomeaware of the differences between thegenders.

    The Phallic Stage

    Children in this stage will begin to see theirsame sex parent as a rival for theaffections of their opposite sex parent.

    For Boys this phenomenon is known as theOedipus Complex for girls it is known asthe Electra Complex .

    Stage 4 The Latency Stage Age 6 to Puberty

    In the Latent Stage Freud says thatchildren put aside their sexual desires topursue learning.

    This setting aside of sexual desires isknown as sublimination.

    There is no conflict and no socializationtask in this stage.

    Stage 5 The Genital StagePuberty- Adulthood

    During the Genital stage we become matureand receive as much satisfaction fromproviding pleasure as we do fromreceiving.

    Freud says that we all reach this stage byadolescence.
