To add to this exciting Biennial Convention, the historic city of Boston has its own contri· butions. The best tickets have been reserved for "Sheer Madness," Boston's longest running play for the Tuesday and Friday performances. Kennedy Library or a tour of the National Nursing Archives. And, during the beautiful New England foliage season, a 3 day/2 night Post-Convention Tour has been planned. It promises to be a rewarding and memorable 27th Biennial Convention.

A Letter from a Founder

My copy of the brochure and information regarding the Spanish-American Research Congress in Madrid arrived today. It greatly impr:essed me. I'm fi lled with pride and humility to realize that Sigma Theta Tau after only sixty years now has an International aspect far beyond the founders' dream.

Several years ago Sister Rosemary Donley predicted to me that someday Sigma Theta Tau would go International, so the planned Congress seems to bear out her foresight.

Congratulations to you and all the officers who I know have worked diligently to bring the Congress to fruition.

Most Sincerely,

Elizabeth M. Miller

- SIGMA THETA TAU - POSITION PAPER - TEN-YEAR PLAN

FOUNDED IN 1922 to enhance and support nursing scholarship, Sigma Theta Tau is the honor society of nursing. Today, in 1983, the society boasts more than 65,000 members located throughout the world and 161 chapters in universities and colleges in the United States and Puerto Rico.

THE INTELLECTUAL CAPABILITY of its members, their commitment to excellence and their leadership roles in educational and practice settings place the members of Sigma Theta Tau in key positions to influence and direct health care service and education in the next century.

IN 1981, THE SOCIETY announced the launching of a significant undertaking aimed at improving the health of the public: the implementation of a ten-year plan to increase the scientific base of nursing practice and sensitize the public to the need for the nursing research required to achieve it

SIGMA THETA TAU'S ten-year plan, entitled Focus on Scholarship, has three distinct components that must be developed sequentially as well as concurrently. These are resource development, knowledge expansion, and knowledge utilization.

RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT implies a substantial increase in public and private support for nursing research. It demands the dissemination of findings, translated in not meaningful words and actions that demonstrate to the profession itself and to the public the benefits of that research.

EXPANSION OF KNOWLEDGE recognizes that while a knowledge base does already exist, answers to many significant questions have yet to be found. Nursing's knowledge base will be expanded through a global network of well-prepared nurse researchers.

FINALLY, THE UTILIZATION OF KNOWLEDGE requires that research findings will be diffused through all facets of nursing so that nursing's ever growing knowledge base will underlie nursing practice in all settings. Professional nurses then will be seen as designers of the health care delivery system.

IN ANNOUNCING THIS ten-year plan - a blueprint for excellence - the members of Sigma Theta Tau commit themselves to strengthening the education of nurses, to creating a better world for nursing research and practice, to international dialogue among nurses, and to improving the care and health of all peoples throughout the world.
